Encode the source file for a sensible balance of quality and size, then configure the outgoing live encoder to match YouTube’s current ingest recommendations. There is no universal bitrate or quality setting that guarantees a small file and a particular visual result: test a representative clip before encoding a full library.
Why the video file and live stream need different settings
A prerecorded video saved on disk can use quality-based encoding to reduce its size. The live encoder then reads that file and sends a separate, continuous feed to YouTube. The file’s bitrate does not have to equal the bitrate used for live ingest.
YouTube’s upload recommendations are for uploaded video assets, not a required archive bitrate for a file that will be played into a live stream. For 2160p SDR uploads, YouTube lists 35–45 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 53–68 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. Treat those figures as upload guidance, not a rule for encoding a loop file. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and live encoder settings describe different workflows.
Choose settings for the source video
Check what you actually have
Before encoding, confirm that the source is 3840 × 2160, note its frame rate, and check whether it is SDR or HDR. “4K” in a filename does not prove the picture has that resolution; an upscale will not restore detail that was never present. YouTube defines 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels. YouTube’s 4K resolution guidance

Use quality-based encoding to explore smaller files
FFmpeg supports quality-based controls as well as constant-bitrate (CBR) and variable-bitrate (VBR) approaches. A quality-based encode adjusts the bitrate as the picture becomes more or less complex, so the resulting size is content-dependent. There is no single CRF or other quality value that guarantees a specific file size or visual quality for every video. See FFmpeg’s documentation for the encoder and rate-control options you use.
- Select a representative short section of the footage, including the hardest material to encode: fine textures, fast movement, gradients, and dark scenes.
- Encode that section at several quality settings with the codec you plan to use.
- Compare each output at full resolution, looking for lost detail, banding, blocking, or distracting artifacts. Check the resulting file sizes too.
- Choose the smallest version that remains acceptable for your content, then test it in the actual playback and streaming chain before processing a long library.
This test-and-compare workflow is more dependable than copying a bitrate from a different video. Games with detailed textures, rapid camera movement, and particle effects can stress an encoder differently from static footage.

When you need a predictable target size
If you have a fixed storage limit, use a bitrate-targeted workflow and calculate from the average bitrate and duration. As a planning estimate, size in bytes is approximately bitrate in bits per second multiplied by duration in seconds, divided by eight; allow extra capacity for audio and container overhead. For example, a sustained 10 Mbps works out to about 4.5 GB of decimal data per hour, or about 108 GB over 24 hours, before audio and container overhead. That is arithmetic, not a YouTube storage recommendation. VBR output may differ because its average bitrate changes with content. Measure an actual encode and plan capacity around the output and retention period. FFmpeg rate-control documentation
Choose a codec your whole playback chain can handle
Codec choice is a trade-off between compression, encoding support, and playback compatibility. YouTube’s upload recommendations specify H.264; its live ingest settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in applicable configurations. Those formats are not automatically interchangeable at every step: the source encoder, playback application, hardware, and live encoder all need to support the chosen format. If a local application must decode the file continuously in real time, test that exact combination before committing to a large batch.

Do not assume that choosing HEVC or AV1 will guarantee a particular reduction in file size. Results depend on the footage, encoder, and settings. Compare representative outputs and verify that your playback and live encoder can use them reliably. Check YouTube’s current live ingest formats and requirements before configuring the outgoing stream.
Set the outgoing live encoder for YouTube
The encoder that sends the live feed must follow YouTube’s live ingest guidance, independently of how compact the source file is. YouTube specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec and frame rate; the current figures below are from YouTube’s live settings page as surfaced in 2026, and that page may change.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare and test a 24/7 broadcast
- Confirm the video and audio. Check resolution, frame rate, SDR/HDR status, playback, and audio continuity. Make sure the chosen file decodes without problems in the software or service that will send it live.
- Set up the YouTube live stream. Create or select the intended live event in YouTube Studio and use its stream key in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Follow YouTube’s current account and live-stream requirements.
- Configure live output separately. Use CBR, choose the live bitrate for the selected codec and frame rate from YouTube’s current table, and set a two-second keyframe interval. Check that resolution and frame rate match the material and the output your encoder can sustain.
- Run a test before leaving it unattended. Check image detail, motion, audio, loop transitions, and the stream’s health in YouTube Studio. A compact source encode is not useful if the playback chain stutters or the outgoing stream is unstable.
- Check the network and storage plan. YouTube advises leaving upload-bandwidth headroom rather than using all available capacity. If retaining local archives, verify that files are intact and estimate storage from measured output size and retention time.
- Monitor the live operation. Check stream health after launch and periodically while it runs. A 24/7 broadcast depends on the complete chain—media, decoder, encoder, network, and YouTube ingest—not just the source file’s bitrate. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The 4K file is still too large: Do not lower the bitrate blindly. Test a quality-based encode on representative footage, compare at full resolution, and measure the output. If you must meet a storage ceiling, target a bitrate and calculate the expected size from duration.
- The video looks soft or shows banding: Compare the source and encode at full resolution, especially in fine detail, gradients, and shadows. Try a less aggressive quality setting or a different encoder configuration, then repeat the sample test.
- The live stream is unstable despite a small file: Source-file size does not determine the outgoing live bitrate or network load. Check YouTube’s stream health, available upload capacity and headroom, encoder load, and the live settings for the selected codec and frame rate.
- The live encoder cannot play the chosen file smoothly: The file may be difficult for the local playback chain to decode in real time, or the codec may not be supported throughout the chain. Test a compatible codec and playback setup before the 24/7 run.
- The stream reports ingest or keyframe problems: Recheck the outgoing encoder’s CBR mode, bitrate, codec, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live settings. Keep the keyframe interval at the recommended two seconds and no longer than four.
- A loop or archive is incomplete: Verify the media files and the playlist or playback configuration, then check the live output again after correction. For local recording, confirm that the archive is present and readable rather than assuming a continuous broadcast produced a valid copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
