There is no single monthly price for a 24/7 YouTube stream: the total depends on what you run locally, which services you rent, and whether you pay to deliver video to viewers separately from YouTube. Start by mapping the signal path, then price only the components your setup actually uses. For a 30-day month, continuous operation is 720 hours.
First decide what “running a 24/7 YouTube stream” means
A creator can encode video on a local computer and send the feed to YouTube. Another setup can encode and package video in the cloud, then deliver it through a separately hosted playback service or CDN. Those are different cost models. Viewer-delivery charges for a separate distribution workflow are not a universal fee for streaming to YouTube.
Local encoding to YouTube
In a local workflow, the computer or encoder, power, and internet connection stay active and send a contribution feed to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into formats for viewers using different devices and networks. Do not automatically add a separate viewer CDN bill to this path; include one only if your architecture actually uses separately hosted distribution.
Cloud encoding and separate distribution
A cloud workflow may bill for active encoding channels, ingest, packaging or origination, storage, redundancy, and viewer delivery or egress. The exact list depends on the services selected. When distribution is separately hosted, audience size and viewing bitrate can make delivery a major part of the bill.

Build an estimate from your actual workflow
- Draw the signal path. Mark what runs on your computer or hardware, what is sent to YouTube, and whether a separate cloud playback or distribution service is involved. Price only components present in that diagram.
- Set the billing period. For an assumed 30-day month, use 720 active hours. Substitute the actual period for another month. Check whether a vendor rounds active time or imposes a minimum charge.
- Write down the video profile. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. If a provider charges per encoded output, count each output in the ladder. YouTube recommends selecting a quality your connection can sustain, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health.
- Specify resilience. Note whether the design has one pipeline or redundant pipelines. Include any additional resources or duplicate ingest required for failover.
- Estimate delivery only if applicable. For separately hosted playback, estimate concurrent viewers over time, average watched bitrate, viewer-hours, and the CDN cache-hit or egress assumptions used by the provider.
- Use current rates for the chosen region. Record the service region, billing currency, configuration, and date you checked prices. Cloud rates and billing rules vary; historical examples are not current quotes.
- List exclusions and make scenarios. State whether your estimate includes internet, electricity, equipment purchase, labor, storage, taxes, and contingency. Build low, expected, and high cases if audience demand or watched bitrate is uncertain.
Calculate the major cost components
For a cloud-hosted workflow, use this structure:
Monthly estimate = active encoding/channel charges + ingest charges + packaging/origination charges + eligible storage charges + distribution/egress charges + redundancy and fixed charges.
For separately hosted distribution, a first-order delivery-volume estimate is:

GB delivered ≈ average watched bitrate (Mbps) × viewer-hours × 0.45
This approximation uses decimal gigabytes. Multiply the estimated volume by the applicable regional CDN or egress rate, and separately model origin or cache traffic if it is billed. Actual adaptive-bitrate viewing, cache behavior, protocol overhead, and a provider’s billing units can change the result; use the provider’s calculator or billing telemetry for a quote.

Keep viewers, viewer-hours, and bitrate distinct
Peak concurrent viewers are not the same as average concurrent viewers. Viewer-hours capture both audience size and time watched: for example, 100 people watching for two hours produce 200 viewer-hours. The formula uses average watched bitrate, not necessarily the stream’s highest available bitrate. For a multi-bitrate stream, viewers may watch different outputs as their devices and connections change.
Account for resolution and output ladders
Resolution and bitrate affect encoding choices and the volume delivered. If a provider charges for each output, price every rendition in the ladder rather than treating the ladder as one encode. For YouTube delivery, remember that YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream for viewers; do not assume your YouTube contribution bitrate is also the bitrate every viewer receives.

What published cloud examples do—and do not—tell you
Published provider examples are useful for understanding how a bill can be assembled, but neither is a universal monthly price for a creator’s YouTube stream. The AWS figures below are scenario examples from official AWS material; their publication or revision year was not stated in the available source excerpts. Check current regional pricing before using them as a budget.
| Example | Published figures | Scope and limits |
|---|---|---|
| AWS reserved single-pipeline channel | $0.0716 per hour; $515.59 for a 30-day month | A specific single-pipeline configuration in the AWS Media & Entertainment FAQ. It is not an all-in price for every 24/7 YouTube setup. |
| AWS worked deployment example | $3,838.69 for 200 hours in a month with approximately 100 viewers; $904.69 encoding and packaging, plus $2,934.00 distribution | HD 1080p in US East (N. Virginia); viewer calculations use the highest bitrate and assume a 99% CloudFront-to-MediaPackage cache-hit ratio. It is not a full 24/7 month or the cost of merely sending a feed to YouTube. AWS says estimates may exceed actual costs, prices can change, and each service’s pricing page should be checked. |
AWS’s FAQ identifies encoding parameters, redundancy, target devices, audience size, average watched quality, and CDN cache-hit or egress assumptions as cost drivers. Its deployment guide recommends creating a budget through AWS Cost Explorer. Treat both examples as illustrations of particular architectures, not quotes for your own design.

Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google Cloud’s pricing documentation describes a ten-minute minimum and rounds active duration to the nearest minute after that minimum. Pricing depends on active channel time and input/output resolution. Since a complete current rate table for your region and configuration is needed to calculate a defensible total, price your actual setup on the live pricing page rather than extrapolating a generic monthly amount.
Google Cloud’s published channel quotas include input and output resolution and bitrate limits; its documentation also says a channel may restart after 24 hours in an active state. Check current quotas and account for the operational impact if you are designing an uninterrupted workflow.
Choose a cost model that fits your channel
- Local computer or encoder: budget for the equipment and ongoing power and internet you actually use. Those costs depend on your circumstances; the cited provider examples do not establish a universal total for them.
- Cloud encoding without separate viewer hosting: identify active channel, ingest, output, redundancy, and fixed charges. Do not add a viewer CDN estimate unless your setup includes separately hosted distribution.
- Cloud encoding plus separately hosted delivery: model channel and packaging costs separately from viewer delivery. Use audience viewer-hours, average watched bitrate, regional delivery rates, and cache or origin assumptions.
- Any architecture: compare providers on the same hours, region, resolution, output ladder, redundancy, audience assumptions, and included services. An encoding-only charge is not comparable to a total that includes CDN delivery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than operate your own always-on computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, and the same product features; the billing period changes by plan. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
Common estimating mistakes
- Calling one architecture’s price “the cost of a YouTube stream.” A local contribution feed and separately hosted cloud delivery have different billable parts.
- Multiplying peak audience by the full month. Use expected concurrent viewers over time and calculate viewer-hours; peak and average audiences are not interchangeable.
- Applying one bitrate to every viewer without saying so. State whether you use average watched bitrate or a conservative highest-bitrate assumption.
- Ignoring redundancy or output count. Add duplicate resources where required, and price every output when billing is per output.
- Using old sample rates as current quotes. Verify the service, region, currency, and configuration against current pricing and note when you checked.
- Leaving out operational constraints. Confirm upload capacity and stream health for a local setup, and review active-channel quotas and restart behavior for a cloud workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube charge a universal monthly fee just because a stream is live all month?
No universal fee is established here; the bill depends on the equipment and services in the workflow.
Should I include electricity and internet in my estimate?
Include them if you want a total cost of ownership, but calculate them from your own equipment, rates, and connection plan; the cloud examples do not supply a universal figure.
