Check the backfield order, estimate carries and receiving work, look for a useful role while the starter is healthy, then weigh the player’s upside against the roster spot he costs.
Start with the actual backfield order
Map the full running back room before deciding whether a player is a worthwhile handcuff. Confirm the starter, the direct backup, other runners who could share carries, the passing-down option and the likely goal-line back. A depth-chart label is a clue, not a guarantee that one player inherits the whole job.
Use official team information and recent reporting close to the time you make the decision. Trades, signings, injuries and coaching choices can change the order quickly. Matt Harmon of NFL.com sums up the key test: “Make sure you know the handcuff you seek is actually in line to be the starter. Judge whether the back can handle the opportunity
Consider a player’s role history and available performance evidence, but do not treat a prospect label, reputation or past production as proof that he is ready for a larger role now. The useful question is whether his ability and likely assignment make the opportunity fantasy-relevant. A capable runner has limited contingent value if several teammates are positioned to take meaningful work.

Estimate the role if the starter is out
Model what the offense is likely to do, rather than assigning the starter’s entire workload to the backup. Consider carries, receptions, goal-line chances and whether another runner would join a committee. Receiving work and high-value touches can matter as much as raw carry volume, especially in formats that reward receptions.
A historical NFL.com analysis by Matt Harmon examined 10 handcuff backs and found that, in games when the starter missed time, those replacements averaged 53 percent of their teams’ carries. Harmon contrasted that with a typical workhorse share of roughly 60 percent to the low 70s percent in clear backfields. This is a limited historical sample, not a current-league average or a forecast for any particular player. Only two backs in the sample—Marcel Reece in 2012 and Michael Bush in 2011—reached a workhorse-level carry rate; many replacements led committees or shared work in “all hands” arrangements. Bush illustrates the upside of a clear path: during Darren McFadden’s absence, Bush took 80.7 percent of Oakland’s distributed carries, according to Harmon’s analysis. That exceptional historical example is evidence of what a concentrated role can look like, not a workload to expect from every backup.
Check for value before an injury
A backup who already gets passing-down, goal-line or rotational work may help your lineup while the starter is active. That standalone role can make a bench spot more useful than a pure contingency bet whose value depends entirely on an injury. Check actual usage rather than assuming that a player’s nominal role will produce regular fantasy points.

Match the player to your league and roster
The same backup can be worth holding in one league and expendable in another. Compare the player’s likely role with your scoring format, roster size, bench space, waiver access and team needs. A player with receiving work may fit a reception-scoring format differently from one whose appeal rests mostly on carries or goal-line chances.
Also compare the cost of the handcuff with the alternatives available at that point in the draft or on the waiver wire. The spot could go to a player with immediate utility, while a handcuff may offer only conditional upside. NFL.com’s 2026 running-back tiers describe their final tier as handcuff territory and characterize holding such players as a possible luxury depending on league format. Use current lists as starting points, not answers
Rankings and handcuff lists can help you identify names to investigate, but they do not replace checking the current roster, role, health and projections. NFL.com’s 2026 draft advice names Tyler Allgeier (ARI), Keaton Mitchell (LAC), Brian Robinson (ATL) and Tank Bigsby (PHI) as players to know. These are season-specific examples, not enduring recommendations: verify each player’s current team and role before acting on them. Repeat the evaluation when roles change
Reassess after a trade, signing, injury report, coach statement or change in usage. A player who was the clear next option can lose that status, and a previously crowded backfield can become easier to read. Before making a lineup or roster move, verify the latest information and estimate the role again.
