To export a screen recording in a format that plays or edits correctly, use your recording app’s export or remux option, or import the recording into an editor and export a finished video. MP4 is a common choice for sharing, but the right format depends on the destination and the video codec inside the file. If you record with OBS and want protection against an interrupted recording, capture to MKV and remux to MP4 afterward.
Choose a format for where the recording is going
MP4, MKV, MOV, and WebM are containers: they package video and audio. The codecs inside those containers also affect whether a particular player, editor, or upload service can use the file. Changing a filename from .mkv to .mp4 does not convert the video or its codecs.
| What you need | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Share or upload a finished recording | MP4 is a common compatibility target. | Confirm the destination accepts the video and audio codecs in the file; an MP4 extension alone does not guarantee acceptance. |
| Protect an OBS recording if capture stops unexpectedly | Record to MKV, then remux to MP4 if needed. | This is an OBS workflow, not a universal feature of every recorder. Some editors have less support for MKV. |
| Edit in a particular application | Use a container and codecs that the editor supports. OBS notes fragmented MP4/MOV as options that can suit some editing and upload workflows. | Check the current support information for your editor before recording a long session. |
| Use a Clipchamp screen recording in an edited project | Import the capture and export the finished project as MP4. | Clipchamp’s initial screen-recording download may be WebM; its finished project export is MP4. |
| Deliver at a specific resolution | Select an available export resolution in your editor. | Options depend on the product and, in Clipchamp, may depend on account type and plan. |
OBS describes MP4 as a common internet-video standard, but its suitability still depends on the destination and codecs. See the OBS audio/video formats guide and the Clipchamp supported-format list.
Export or remux an OBS recording
Record to MKV when interruption resilience matters
- In OBS, open Settings > Output.
- Set the recording format to MKV, then apply the setting and make a short test recording.
- Record your session. OBS recommends MKV because an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the whole file than an unfinished standard MP4 recording.
Remux the recording to MP4
When you need an MP4 copy, use OBS’s built-in remux option to convert the non-MP4 recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video; it is not a way to change the codec or repair a damaged source. The exact menu presentation can vary by OBS version, so use OBS’s current standard recording output guide for the remux command and controls. Keep the original MKV until you have checked the resulting MP4 in the intended player or editor.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as options that may be more compatible with common editors or upload platforms than MKV. Check the specific destination’s requirements rather than assuming every MP4 or MOV will work.
Export a screen recording in Clipchamp
Turn a capture into an MP4 project export
- Make or open the screen recording in Clipchamp. Microsoft says the downloaded capture may be WebM, depending on the default settings.
- Import or open the recording in the project you want to edit.
- Select Export to save the finished project. Microsoft documents finished projects as MPEG-4 (.mp4) at 30 fps.
- Choose an available output resolution: Clipchamp lists 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 4K. Which choices are available depends on account type and plan; some premium features or 4K export may require an eligible plan.
- Play the exported file and check its image, sound, duration, and resolution before sharing it.
Clipchamp lists MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, DIVX, 3GP, WMV, VOB, and MKV as supported input video containers. Some files may need conversion before use, which can take longer. A failed import does not necessarily mean the extension is unsupported: the codec or file integrity may be the issue. See Microsoft’s guides to making a screen recording, Clipchamp export formats, and supported video file formats. Product options can change.

Troubleshoot an export that will not play or import
- The file has the wrong extension: Renaming it does not convert it. Use the recorder’s remux feature or export through an editor.
- An MP4 will not upload or open: Check the destination’s supported codecs as well as its accepted containers. MP4 is not a guarantee that every codec combination is supported.
- An MKV will not open in your editor: Confirm the editor supports MKV, then remux the OBS recording to MP4 or use a format the editor accepts.
- A Clipchamp import fails: Check the file’s codec and integrity, not only its extension. If the application converts the file before editing, allow time for that process.
- The exported resolution or quality option is missing: Check the app’s available export settings and account or plan eligibility. Clipchamp’s listed resolutions and features are subject to account and plan availability.
- An interrupted recording is unusable: For future OBS captures, use MKV when interruption resilience matters, then remux to MP4 if a destination requires it.
