The right steps differ by system: the Switch is portable and may be docked, while the PS5 needs room around its vents. Neither manufacturer gives a guaranteed number of years a console will last; the care guidance below focuses on what owners can control.

Keep airflow clear and control the environment
Nintendo Switch
Do not cover the Switch’s air intakes or vents while playing. Leave space for ventilation around the console and AC adapter, and avoid extended direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold, moisture, dust, dirt, and impacts. Nintendo’s guidance is about safe operating conditions; it does not promise a particular lifespan.
PlayStation 5
Place the PS5 where air can move freely around it: at least 10 cm (4 in) from a wall, not in a narrow or cramped space, and not on long-fiber carpet. Do not cover it with cloth. Avoid storing or resting the controller or headset on top of the console. These are Sony’s placement instructions, not a quantified guarantee of additional years of use.
Clean without introducing damage
Clean a Switch gently
- Power off the console and unplug accessories before cleaning.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, clean cloth. For routine cleaning, Nintendo says to lightly dampen the cloth with water and wring out excess before wiping.
- Never pour liquid onto the console or submerge it. Wait until it is completely dry before using it again.
Nintendo separately describes disinfecting by lightly applying about 70% alcohol disinfectant to a cloth. That is not permission to pour or spray alcohol directly onto the console; keep liquid off the system itself.

Clean a PS5 according to its model guide
- Unplug the AC power cord before care.
- Use a soft, dry cloth on the plastic surfaces. Avoid alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, insecticides, and chemically treated cloths.
- Use a handheld vacuum to remove dust from the vents. Sony also recommends removing the covers and vacuuming dust trapped underneath.
- Check the manual for your exact PS5 model and region before removing covers or attempting any maintenance.
The cited Sony guide applies to the CFI-71XX family. Cover removal and other model-specific directions can differ, so do not assume that guide applies to every PS5 variant.
Understand battery wear and charging
Switch battery
Nintendo says a Switch can remain in its dock to stay charged, and leaving it docked or plugged in after it is fully charged—including overnight—will not harm the battery. Battery runtime does decline gradually with use. Nintendo’s North American support article estimates that after about 800 charge cycles, battery life will decrease to about 80% compared with a new console. That is an approximate battery-life estimate, not a deadline for replacing the console, and actual runtime varies by Switch model and by the software and functions in use. PS5 wireless controller battery
If a wireless controller will sit unused for a long period, Sony recommends giving it a full charge at least once a year to maintain battery functionality. Sony notes that controller battery life varies with storage method, use state, and environment. This advice concerns the controller, not the PS5 console itself. See Sony’s safety guide.

If liquid gets into a Switch
Stop using and charging the console. Nintendo advises contacting customer service for further instructions. Do not try to open or repair the system yourself; Nintendo warns against disassembly and attempted repair.

If dust or heat is a concern on PS5
Turn off and unplug the console before cleaning, then use the model-appropriate Sony instructions. Do not improvise by opening the console beyond the cover-removal steps permitted in its manual. If you are unsure whether a maintenance step applies to your version, check that model’s guide rather than forcing a cover or component.
