In the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, no extraction is guaranteed safe: calling a standard exfil reveals its location to every squad and draws AI combatants. Before activating it, agree who will call, cover approaches, handle AI and revive anyone who goes down. If that site is too exposed, Hostage Rescue, Private Exfil or a fueled Heavy Chopper may offer another way out—but each has prerequisites and its own risks.
This guide covers the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ mechanics. Activision has announced a new DMZ experience for Modern Warfare 4, planned for October 23, 2026, but its exact extraction controls and procedures have not been established in the available official guidance as of October 7, 2026.
What to do when your squad needs to leave
- Confirm the mode. The steps below apply to the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, not automatically to the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 mode.
- Make the decision together. Once the squad commits to leaving, prioritize extraction over optional looting. In the original mode, dying meant losing Backpack contents.
- Choose a route. Check whether a standard exfil is workable or whether your squad can use Hostage Rescue, a Private Exfil or the Heavy Chopper. These alternatives are not guaranteed to be nearby or uncontested.
- Assign jobs before activation. Name one player to call the exfil, others to watch likely approaches and manage AI, and one teammate to help with recovery if someone is downed.
- Board as soon as the aircraft arrives. The site is exposed while the squad waits, and the helicopter remains only briefly. Do not use final exfil as a reason to delay a viable earlier departure.
Why a standard exfil is dangerous
In the original DMZ, calling an exfil helicopter marked that location on every squad’s Tac Map and brought AI combatants swarming to the site. Your team therefore has to account for both the AI response and rival Operators who may converge on the marked location or use the helicopter.
Coordinate before calling. A scattered squad that reaches the site at different times has less ability to cover approaches, manage incoming AI and board together. Once the helicopter arrives, use the opening to get aboard rather than lingering to loot or pursue a fight.

Which extraction route fits the situation?

Activision’s November 2022 DMZ overview describes standard and final exfil, Hostage Rescue and teammate revives. Its Season 03 overview documents Private Exfil and the Heavy Chopper. These are legacy-mode features; do not assume they carry over to the new DMZ.
When to risk a teammate recovery
The original squad-based DMZ allowed teammates to revive downed Operators and to revive a teammate killed in the squad’s match at the death location, using a longer recovery process. Attempting that recovery can preserve squad strength, but it also keeps the team committed to an exposed location for longer.

Before committing, make sure the rest of the squad can cover the attempt and that the route out remains viable. If the team cannot protect the recovery, continuing toward extraction may be the more practical choice.
How to treat final exfil
Final exfil is a deadline, not a plan A. In the original mode, it appeared after the marked exfil sites had been used. The squad still had to call it, face the possibility of AI and rival Operators, and board before the helicopter departed. Operators still aboard when it left were listed MIA.

What is confirmed for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ?
Activision’s June 6, 2026 preview describes a persistent DMZ mode with multiple extraction options, including helicopters and skyhooks, and a planned October 23, 2026 launch. An October 5, 2026 guide covers Hajin and upcoming features but does not specify the new mode’s extraction controls, timers, signaling rules or rescue procedure. The original DMZ steps here should not be treated as confirmed instructions for Modern Warfare 4.
