Use Windows 11’s Reset this PC if your ROG Ally still works and you want the easiest wipe. Use ASUS Cloud Recovery from the BIOS if you want to restore the Ally’s ASUS factory software image or Windows will not boot. Windows Reset reinstalls Windows, while ASUS Cloud Recovery restores the ASUS operating system and factory driver environment. Both can erase data, so back up the internal drive and retrieve your BitLocker recovery key first.
Which ROG Ally reset method should you use?

These instructions apply primarily to the original 2023 ROG Ally and the 2024 ROG Ally X. Menus and recovery availability can vary by model, BIOS version, Windows build, and region.
What “factory reset” means on the ROG Ally
Windows Reset this PC reinstalls Windows, removes installed applications and settings, and lets you choose whether to keep personal files. Its Cloud download option downloads a fresh Windows copy; Local reinstall uses recovery files already on the Ally. Microsoft’s Cloud download is not the same as ASUS Cloud Recovery and should not be described as restoring ASUS’s complete factory image.
ASUS Cloud Recovery is ASUS’s factory-restoration path. Launched from the Ally’s UEFI BIOS, it downloads an ASUS recovery image and restores the operating system and factory driver configuration. It erases all data on the storage device containing the operating system. ASUS estimates the process at approximately one to three hours, depending on the network and device configuration. Neither method repairs a failing SSD, reverses physical damage, or necessarily rolls the BIOS back to an older version.
Before you reset: essential checklist
- Back up documents, Downloads, screenshots, recordings, browser data, game saves, emulator data, save states, BIOS files, mods, and configuration files from the internal SSD.
- Confirm that Steam, Xbox, Epic, and other launchers have synchronized cloud saves. Not every game supports cloud saves.
- Export browser passwords and bookmarks, and save two-factor authentication recovery codes.
- Retrieve your BitLocker recovery key from Microsoft’s recovery-key page. Do this before resetting; Windows Recovery or Cloud Recovery may request it.
- For resale, sign out of game launchers and your Microsoft account after backing up your data.
- Remove the microSD card and USB storage unless you are deliberately using an external drive for backup.
- Connect the original charger or another reliable, sufficiently powerful charger.
- Have your Wi-Fi credentials ready. If Cloud Recovery cannot use your router, a phone hotspot may help.
Do not start ASUS Cloud Recovery if the Ally cannot boot and contains irreplaceable files that are not backed up. ASUS warns that the OS drive will be erased and recommends contacting service in that situation.
Method 1: Reset the ROG Ally from Windows 11
This is the easiest option when Windows still starts normally.

- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → Recovery.
- Beside Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
- Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
- Review the summary and confirm the reset.
- Leave the Ally connected to power until Windows setup appears again.
Choose the correct reset options
- Keep my files: Reinstalls Windows while retaining personal files, but removes apps and settings. Use it for troubleshooting, not resale.
- Remove everything: Removes personal files, apps, and settings. This is the minimum appropriate choice before transferring ownership.
- Cloud download: Downloads a fresh Windows installation. It can help when local Windows recovery files are damaged, but it is not ASUS Cloud Recovery.
- Local reinstall: Reuses files on the Ally and can be faster or more practical without a large download, but may not help if those files are corrupted.
If Windows shows an option to clean the drive or erase data more thoroughly, that process takes longer and is more appropriate when transferring ownership. The exact wording varies by Windows build. A standard reset is not a blanket guarantee that every recoverable byte has been securely destroyed.

Method 2: Restore the ASUS factory image with Cloud Recovery
Choose this method when you want the Ally returned to its ASUS software environment, when Windows is badly damaged, or when Windows will not boot.
Enter the Ally’s BIOS
- Shut down the Ally completely.
- Press and hold Volume Down.
- While holding Volume Down, press the Power button.
- Keep holding Volume Down until the BIOS screen appears.

Start ASUS Cloud Recovery
- Check the BIOS clock and correct the date and time if necessary. ASUS says an incorrect BIOS time can make Cloud Recovery unavailable.
- Press F7 to enter Advanced Mode. Because the Ally has no built-in keyboard, use an external keyboard through a USB-C hub if the BIOS requires keyboard input.
- Select Advanced → ASUS Cloud Recovery.
- Read and accept the policy prompts.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, or use a compatible wired network adapter where supported.
- Keep the charger connected.
- Allow the recovery files to download.
- If offered, back up selected files to external storage.
- Confirm the factory reset.
- Do not power off the Ally, disconnect the charger, or interrupt the network.
- Wait for the process to finish, then complete Windows out-of-box setup.
Cloud Recovery may restart several times or show a temporary black screen. Those behaviors can be normal; do not force a shutdown merely because the display is blank. ASUS estimates roughly one to three hours, but the actual time depends on the connection and device configuration.
If Windows will not boot
The BIOS route above is usually the most direct recovery path. If the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) loads, you can also try Troubleshoot → Reset this PC.
Some systems provide an ASUS recovery option through MyASUS in WinRE:

- From Windows, hold Shift while selecting Restart, or enter WinRE through Windows recovery options.
- Select Troubleshoot → MyASUS in WinRE → Cloud Recovery.
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Back up files if necessary and possible.
- Confirm the destructive reset and keep power and network connected.
ASUS says the ROG Ally may need a USB-C dongle or hub and an external keyboard to navigate MyASUS in WinRE. If MyASUS in WinRE is not listed, the model or recovery environment may not support it. Troubleshooting failed recovery
BitLocker asks for a recovery key
Do not guess. Use the Microsoft account associated with the Ally and visit aka.ms/myrecoverykey. If the key is unavailable and important data is not backed up, stop before choosing a destructive recovery path.
Cloud Recovery shows a Network Error
- Check and correct the BIOS clock.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot.
- Keep the charger connected.
- Check whether ASUS recommends a BIOS update for the specific error.
- Retry Cloud Recovery.
- If it still fails, use official Windows installation media or contact ASUS support.
ASUS also warns that a Wi-Fi 6/6E card may fail to connect to, or see, some Wi-Fi 7 routers during Cloud Recovery. ASUS suggests another access point or a phone hotspot; this is a compatibility warning for the affected setup, not a universal limitation of every Ally.
Cloud Recovery is unavailable
Verify the BIOS time, restore BIOS defaults if settings were changed, and confirm that the model and firmware support the feature. Availability can vary after storage replacement, between Ally variants, and with the state of the recovery environment.
The screen is black or the Ally keeps restarting
Several restarts and a temporary black screen can occur during Cloud Recovery. Keep waiting while power and network remain connected. Force a shutdown only after allowing a reasonable recovery period and checking ASUS’s model-specific guidance.

The Ally boots back into BIOS
Check whether Windows Boot Manager is present in the boot options, restore BIOS defaults if boot settings were changed, and confirm that Cloud Recovery completed. Retry recovery with stable power and network. Do not assume this automatically means the SSD has failed.
You replaced the SSD or have multiple drives
Cloud Recovery targets the storage device containing the operating system and erases it. A replacement SSD may not be recognized or may require additional setup. If two or more storage devices are attached, identify the Windows drive and do not assume every drive is safe. Keep removable storage disconnected unless you need it for a backup.
Fallback: official Windows installation media
If Windows Reset and ASUS Cloud Recovery both fail, reinstall Windows using Microsoft’s official installation media. This is a clean Windows reinstallation, not necessarily a complete ASUS factory-image restoration. You may need a USB-C hub, external keyboard, mouse, network access, and the correct ROG Ally drivers.
For the original 2023 Ally, ASUS provides Windows 11, BIOS, firmware, and driver downloads on its official support page. For an Ally X or another variant, use that model’s own ASUS support page rather than assuming the original Ally’s packages are interchangeable.
After the reset
- Complete Windows first-run setup and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Run Settings → Windows Update until no further updates are offered.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and install available ASUS updates.
- Install appropriate chipset, graphics, controller, audio, component, and firmware updates for your exact Ally model.
- Reinstall game launchers and games.
- Restore backed-up files and saves.
- Reinsert the microSD card only after confirming its contents are safe.
- Reconfigure controller profiles, power modes, display settings, and storage locations.
Cloud Recovery may restore factory-default driver versions, although ASUS notes that recovery during an active service period may provide newer versions. Either way, run Windows Update and Armoury Crate SE afterward; the result may not exactly match the software versions shipped with the original unit.
