The safest handoff is a complete factory reset. It removes your Meta account, downloaded games, settings, boundary data and locally stored files from the Quest 2, then returns the headset to its first-time setup screen. Back up anything you may need first: a reset is irreversible for data stored on the headset, although purchases remain attached to your Meta account.
Quick checklist
- Connect the Quest 2 to Wi-Fi and charge it.
- Allow supported cloud backups to finish; copy screenshots, recordings and other personal files elsewhere.
- Factory-reset it in the Meta Quest (sometimes Meta Horizon) app, or use the headset’s USB Update Mode.
- Wait for the restart and confirm the welcome/pairing screen appears.
- Do not sign in again. Power it off and package it with the promised accessories.
What a factory reset removes
Meta describes a reset as wiping the headset and returning it to its out-of-box software state (Meta’s Quest reset video). That includes:
- The account currently on the headset
- Downloaded apps and games
- Device settings and locally stored app data
- Locally saved progress that was not synchronized
- Guardian boundaries and room setup
- Pairing and first-time setup information
This erases device data; it does not delete your Meta account. Purchased apps and games remain associated with your account and can generally be downloaded again on another compatible headset. They are not transferred to the buyer. Save restoration depends on each app’s cloud-backup support, so do not assume every game’s progress will return.
Before resetting: protect anything you want to keep
- Charge the headset and connect it to Wi-Fi. Leave it powered on long enough for supported cloud backups to synchronize.
- Check important games individually. Cloud backup is not universal, and some progress may exist only locally. Meta support recommends using cloud backup before resetting (support guidance).
- Copy personal media. Move screenshots, recordings and downloaded files that are not already stored elsewhere.
- Remove any microSD card, if your particular accessory setup uses one. The Quest 2’s internal game library is not on a removable card, but anything on an inserted card should travel with you, not the buyer.
- Keep your account. Do not delete the Meta account simply to sell the headset; that could affect purchases and other services.
Method 1: Reset in the Meta Quest or Meta Horizon app
Use this method while the headset is paired and visible in the phone app. Current branding and labels vary by app version and region; “Oculus” is the older name.

- Open the Meta Quest app (called Meta Horizon in some current versions).
- Tap Devices and select the connected Quest 2.
- Open Advanced Settings.
- Tap Factory Reset, then confirm with Reset.
Keep the phone and headset powered and connected while the command is delivered. If the app cannot find the headset or pairing is broken, use the headset method below.
Method 2: Reset from the Quest 2 itself
This is usually the best option before a sale or gift because it does not depend on the phone app.

- Turn the Quest 2 completely off.
- Press and hold Power and Volume Down (-) at the same time.
- Continue holding until the boot or USB Update Mode menu appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset.
- Press Power to select it.
- Highlight Yes when asked to confirm, then press Power again.
- Wait for the process and restart to finish. Do not interrupt it or hand over the headset while it is still working.
In this menu, the volume buttons move the highlight and the Power button selects it, as described in Meta’s support instructions (reset instructions).

How to confirm the reset worked
Allow the headset to restart and look for the initial welcome, pairing or setup experience—the same sort of screen a new owner would see. The previous home environment, account, installed apps, library shortcuts, boundaries and personal settings should be gone. Do not pair it again to your phone or sign back in. A device or serial-number entry can remain visible in your online Meta account even after the headset itself has been wiped; Meta support says that record alone does not mean your account remains on the headset (account-record clarification).

If you see “No command” or the menu will not appear
- Hold the Power button until the headset is fully off; wait several seconds.
- Retry Power + Volume Down (-) simultaneously and keep holding until the boot menu is clearly visible.
- Navigate with the volume buttons and select with Power.
- If the app is still paired and operational, use the app reset instead.
User reports describe timing problems, a menu that disappears, and “No command” screens (community examples), but these are not a substitute for current official troubleshooting. If either required button is physically defective and the app cannot connect, contact Meta support or a qualified repair service; there is no dependable software-only replacement for the boot-menu method.
If the Quest 2 is already gone
If you sold, donated or shipped it without resetting, try Meta’s device-management page from a computer or phone. Sign in to the relevant account, select the headset and look for Delete device data, Remote factory reset or equivalent. Meta’s older device page is secure.oculus.com/my/devices; newer account settings may use auth.meta.com/settings/my/devices. URLs and labels can change, and remote deletion may depend on the device being reachable, so treat this as a fallback rather than proof of completion. If the headset was lost, stolen or handed over unreset, also change your Meta password and review account security.

Do not confuse these actions
- Removing a secondary user is not enough for a sale: the primary/admin account and local data may remain. Changing the primary account requires a factory reset (Meta’s account-sharing explanation).
- Removing a device record online is optional account housekeeping, not a replacement for resetting a physical headset you still possess.
- Signing out is less reliable than wiping the device completely.
Final handoff and shipping checklist
- Welcome/setup screen confirmed.
- Headset powered off after the reset.
- Controller AA batteries removed for storage or shipping when appropriate.
- Headset, both controllers, facial interface, charging cable, power adapter and any listed accessories included.
- Facial interface and exterior cleaned with VR-safe materials; never spray liquid into cameras, speakers or the USB-C port.
- Lenses and cameras protected in a rigid, cushioned package.
- Condition and serial number photographed for your records, without publishing unnecessary personal information.
The Bottom Line
Back up your files and supported saves, then factory-reset the Quest 2 and stop at the first-time setup screen. That removes your account and local data from the headset while leaving your purchased games tied to your Meta account.
