Start with a game you already love, identify the parts of its experience you want to repeat, then use store tags, recommendation tools, curators and community tips to build a shortlist. A “hidden gem” is relative: the aim is to find a less familiar game that suits you, not to identify a universally overlooked masterpiece.

1. Decide what you want more of

Pick a game you enjoyed and describe the reasons in concrete terms. “More RPGs” may be too broad; a tighter description might be “turn-based combat, a quiet atmosphere and a story that leaves room to explore.” Choose the traits that matter most to you:

  • Genre and core mechanic: what you do repeatedly while playing.
  • Mood, visual style and pacing.
  • How much the story matters compared with action or exploration.
  • Difficulty, complexity and how much time you want to invest.
  • Solo or co-op play, and any platform you need the game to support.

These traits give you a way to search and compare. They are not a formula that guarantees a good recommendation.

2. Explore store tags, then check the actual game

On Steam, tags can help you move from a familiar game toward titles sharing labels you care about. Valve’s Steam Tags documentation says a game’s top 20 tags determine which tag pages and similar browse views it can appear in. That makes tags a useful first filter, not proof that two games play alike: labels can describe broad themes as well as mechanics.

Open a candidate’s store page and check its description, screenshots and gameplay material against the qualities you wrote down. If a tag led you to the game but the core loop, tone or pace is wrong for you, move on.

3. Tune Steam’s recommendation tools

Interactive Recommender

Steam’s Interactive Recommender uses play patterns and offers tag-based filtering, along with controls to balance niche versus popular games and recent versus classic titles. Valve introduced it as “a way for users to harness the power of machine learning to discover personalized, interactive recommendations, based on your patterns of play,” in its 2020 announcement.

Use the controls to steer the results toward your chosen traits, then judge each suggestion yourself. Valve notes that the recommender cannot recommend new releases that have no player-history data.

Discovery Queue

For newer releases, try Steam’s Discovery Queue. Valve describes the Queue as a way to help surface newer titles; it can complement the Interactive Recommender when a game is too new to have the play-history data that tool relies on. Neither surface guarantees that a result will match your taste.

4. Follow curators who explain their picks

Steam Curators can add a human point of view to discovery. Valve says recommendations from curators you follow appear on tag and genre pages. Browse curators whose taste seems compatible with yours, and look for recommendations that explain why a game may fit their audience rather than relying on a bare endorsement. A curator’s reasoning is useful evidence to consider, not a promise that every pick will work for you. See Valve’s Steam Curators overview.

5. Treat community suggestions as leads

Community discussions can point you toward demos, developer posts and games people found by browsing related titles. In one thread, a player asked, “How do you personally discover small PC games before they start trending?” One reply mentioned random demos, developer posts, itch.io, Reddit comments and clicking through “More Like This.” That is one person’s anecdote, not evidence that any route works best for most players. The useful move is to follow a promising lead, then check whether the game matches your own criteria.

For example, the Reddit discussion can give you ideas for places to browse, but it cannot establish that a particular game is a hidden gem or a good fit for you.

6. Compare a shortlist before you commit

Keep a short list instead of trying to decide from a stream of recommendations. For each candidate, note how it compares with the game or experience you want to revisit:

  • Does its core loop match, or only its genre label?
  • Does the mood and pace appeal to you?
  • Is the story central, optional or minimal?
  • Does its complexity and difficulty suit what you want right now?
  • Does it support solo or multiplayer play as needed?
  • Is it available on your platform, and is it released or still in development?
  • Does its current price work for you?

Verify platform support, release state and price on the individual store page before buying; recommendation pages and community comments may not reflect current details. You can also save a candidate and revisit it later if its fit is unclear.

What makes a game a hidden gem?

There is no single objective threshold in this approach. A title may be familiar to one player and undiscovered by another, while “hidden” can mean different things across genres, platforms and communities. Focus on the more useful question: does this game offer the particular mechanics, mood or pacing you want, and is it unfamiliar enough to be worth exploring? SteamRecs.io describes its own service as a Steam recommendation engine with a “Hidden Indie Gems” feature, but that is the service’s description of itself; check its current availability and details directly at SteamRecs.io.
