How to Find Out Why a YouTube Live Stream Process Stopped on Ubuntu

A YouTube stream going offline doesn’t prove the Ubuntu encoder exited. Correlate the launch method, local and kernel logs, and YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages to narrow down the cause.

Start by finding out how the encoder was launched, then match its final log entries to Ubuntu’s system and kernel logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages. A stream going offline does not, by itself, prove that the Ubuntu process stopped: the encoder may have exited, or it may still be running while YouTube stops receiving usable video.

Preserve the incident details first

Before restarting the encoder or changing its configuration, note when the stream disappeared, the time zone, Ubuntu release, encoder name and version, and whether the host rebooted. If the incident is still under investigation, capture relevant logs before they rotate. Convert timestamps to one time zone before comparing them; otherwise, two records describing the same event can appear unrelated.

The steps below show where to look, not a guaranteed diagnosis. The cause on a particular machine depends on its launch method and the records still available.

Find out how the encoder was started

The right log depends on which program or session managed the encoder. A systemd unit’s journal is useful only if that unit actually launched or managed the process.

If systemd manages the encoder

  1. Check the service state and recent exit information: systemctl status <unit>. Replace <unit> with the actual unit name.
  2. Read the journal for the incident window, substituting the unit and times below with your own: sudo journalctl -u <unit> --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pager.
  3. Inspect the last application output and any exit status, signal, restart count, or systemd stop/restart message. Ubuntu’s documentation demonstrates filtering the journal by service with a unit-specific query such as journalctl -u lxd.

If it was started another way

  • Interactive shell: Check the terminal output or any file, pipe, or logging destination configured by the launcher.
  • Container: Check the container runtime’s logs as well as any host-side supervisor that manages it.
  • Another supervisor or scheduled task: Inspect that manager’s logs and configuration for stop, restart, timeout, or schedule events.

Do not treat an empty systemd unit journal as evidence that the process produced no errors if systemd did not manage it.

Check kernel and host evidence

Application output may not explain a termination caused by host resource pressure, a device or kernel problem, or a security policy. Inspect the kernel messages around the same time:

  • sudo dmesg -T | tail -n 250
  • sudo journalctl -k --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pager

Use the incident window rather than assuming the last 250 messages cover it. Look for memory pressure or OOM messages, device resets, kernel errors, and security denials. Ubuntu defines dmesg as displaying the kernel ring buffer; on Ubuntu 20.10 and later, access is restricted by default to privileged users with CAP_SYSLOG. See Ubuntu’s explanation of dmesg restrictions.

Check AppArmor messages carefully

AppArmor denials can appear in dmesg and other logs that collect kernel messages. A denial record can identify the operation, profile, requested path or name, and process ID or command. Ubuntu’s guide explains how to check and debug denials. However, an explicit AppArmor deny does not produce a log entry, so finding no denial message does not conclusively rule out policy involvement.

Account for Ubuntu edition and release

Ubuntu 22.04 release notes say systemd-oomd shipped by default on Ubuntu Desktop to help avoid overload before the kernel OOM killer acts, and mention oomctl for checking OOMD status. This is specific to that release and edition; do not assume the tool or default applies to every Ubuntu installation. See the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release notes.

Compare the records with YouTube Live Control Room

Open the relevant stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream-health messages around the incident. YouTube says these messages include timestamps and distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow errors. Match each message’s time to the application, supervisor, and kernel records; YouTube documents the categories in Live streaming error messages.

YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event in its encoder settings guidance. An ingest or format error is evidence about what YouTube received, not proof that the local encoder exited. If YouTube reports a problem while the process is still running, inspect the encoder’s output, stream URL or protocol, codec settings, and network path.

Decide whether the process stopped or delivery failed

Check the host itself before inferring what happened from the YouTube player. If the process is still alive, the problem may be that YouTube is no longer receiving usable content. If the process has exited, use its recorded exit status and supervisor event to investigate local termination.

  • Process exited, supervisor records a stop or restart: Check whether an operator, scheduled task, systemd action, or other manager requested it.
  • Process exited with a signal or error: Compare application output with kernel and host messages at the same timestamp; those may reveal a crash, resource event, or other host-side evidence.
  • Process is alive, YouTube reports an ingest or format problem: Investigate encoder output, stream configuration, and the network path rather than assuming a process crash.
  • YouTube went offline but local records are missing: The available evidence may not establish the cause. The player’s status alone cannot distinguish an orderly stop from an unexplained termination or delivery failure.

YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping content from the encoder and say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That platform behavior does not identify why a local process stopped; use the local exit and supervisor records to establish how it ended. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test the network hypothesis if the encoder is still running

If the process remains alive but YouTube stopped receiving usable content, check outbound upload capacity, packet loss or interruptions, and network changes near the incident. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom; it also warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. These are operational recommendations, not measurements of your connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next
Service is inactive or failed in systemctl status Read the unit journal for the incident window. Identify the final application output, exit status or signal, and any systemd stop or restart action.
No useful entries in the service journal Confirm that the unit launched the encoder. If it was started from a shell, container, or another supervisor, check that launch context’s output and logs instead.
Encoder appears to have exited, with no clear application error Compare kernel and host logs for OOM or memory-pressure messages, device resets, kernel errors, and security denials. Also check for a host reboot or supervisor action.
AppArmor-related evidence appears in kernel logs Review the denial’s operation, profile, requested path or name, and process details. A missing denial entry alone does not exclude AppArmor involvement.
Encoder is still running, but YouTube reports stream-health errors Match YouTube’s timestamped messages to encoder output. Check format and codec configuration, stream destination, and network continuity.
No logs cover the incident window Check whether records were rotated or the wrong log destination was inspected. If the original application, supervisor, and kernel evidence is gone, the cause may remain unresolved.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel 24/7 rather than diagnose an Ubuntu encoder, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
