Start with the NFL’s weekly injury report
The NFL injury report organizes player entries by team, game and week, with separate fields for injury, practice participation and game status. Confirm that you are viewing the current season and week: a report page for Week 4 of 2026 is an example of the format, not a lasting reference for a player’s availability.
Read the fields separately. “Limited Participation in Practice” describes participation; “Questionable” is a game-status designation. Neither, by itself, tells you whether the player will ultimately be active or inactive. Don’t translate a practice entry into a game-day decision.
Use depth charts to understand a player’s role
A depth chart can help show how a player is positioned relative to other running backs, but the label depends on the publisher and the chart’s purpose. It is not an official injury report, and it does not guarantee a particular workload.

Check the publisher and timestamp
RotoWire’s all-team depth charts say they update in real time for changes including NFL inactives. The page retrieved October 3, 2026, displayed a last-updated date. Treat that as the publisher’s description of its service, not an independent audit of accuracy or update speed; check the date shown when you use the chart.
Distinguish fantasy rankings from team depth-chart order
ESPN’s 2026 fantasy depth-chart PDF, updated September 8, 2026, is built around stated fantasy-league and scoring assumptions. It explicitly cautions: “These depth charts reflect fantasy value, which may not necessarily match players’ slot on NFL team’s depth chart.” Use its ordering for fantasy context, not as confirmation of a team’s official role or a player’s availability.

CBS Sports’ fantasy depth chart provides position navigation and links to news and injury-report pages. A specific update cadence was not established for the chart, so check for a visible date and confirm time-sensitive details against official updates.
Recheck before kickoff
Injury designations, roster moves and inactive lists can change during game week. Before relying on a running back’s status for a lineup decision, revisit the current NFL report and check official inactives near kickoff. A third-party chart may incorporate later changes, but its update timing is still relevant; don’t treat a chart snapshot as confirmation that a player will be available.

How to compare conflicting updates
When sources appear to disagree, first identify what each one is describing. A practice-participation field, an official game designation, an inactive list, a team-role chart and a fantasy ranking are not interchangeable labels. Don’t average them or choose whichever sounds most definitive.
- Authority: Prefer the NFL report for its injury, practice and game-status fields; use a third-party chart for role context.
- Recency: Confirm the NFL report’s week and the chart’s displayed update date.
- Scope: Check whether a source covers one team or all teams, and whether it is describing NFL roles or fantasy value.
- Later changes: Determine whether the chart says it incorporates roster moves or inactives, then verify game-day availability through official updates.
These checks help keep status and role distinct. The reviewed sources do not establish an independently measured accuracy rate or guaranteed update latency for third-party charts.
