To check whether an NFL wide receiver is playing, start with the NFL’s official injury report for the current week. Use the player’s team site or app for its latest depth chart and coach updates, then check the league’s official inactive report close to kickoff. The injury report records the club’s filed status; a depth chart shows the team’s published ordering, not a guarantee of availability or workload.
Where to check a receiver’s status
- Open the NFL injury report. Select the current week, game and team, then find the receiver. The league report displays the listed injury, practice participation and game status: NFL injury report.
- Check the team’s official channels. Look at the team site or app for its depth chart, transactions, injury updates and coach comments. Team media guides describe these as channels for roster, lineup, inactive and press-conference information: NFL team media guides and channels.
- Recheck for late changes. The league schedule requires teams to report changes after the initial Game Status Report. Check the injury report and official team announcements again, then use the NFL inactive report near game time.
- Verify third-party updates. Treat sports coverage as a pointer to the underlying NFL or team announcement. Check when it was published and whether it links to an official source; an old chart, speculation or an unsourced social post does not establish current status.
How to read practice participation and game status
Practice participation and game status are separate fields. NFL.com describes practice participation as Did Not Participate, Limited Participation or Full Participation. Limited means the player took less than 100% of his normal repetitions; Full means 100%. These labels describe practice, not a final decision about playing.
The game-status designations have distinct meanings: Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play, Doubtful means he is unlikely to participate, and Out means he will not play. The NFL removed “Probable” from its game-status report. In a 2016 explanation, NFL.com said approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years did play; that historical figure is not a probability for a player listed Questionable today. Read the league’s status explanation for context.
When injury reports are filed—and why to check again
The 2026–2027 NFL Important Dates schedule sets filing deadlines by game day. Clubs generally file by 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. On a day a team practices, an estimated practice-status report is not acceptable; a change in a player’s condition after the initial Game Status Report must also be reported.

That cadence makes the report useful but time-sensitive: note when you checked it and revisit it after updates, especially on game day. The report’s authority is about what the club has filed, not a guarantee that the information will remain unchanged.
What a depth chart can—and cannot—tell you
The NFL Media Access Policy requires teams to produce a credible weekly depth chart beginning no later than the week of the first preseason game and continuing through the season. It must list expected starters and backups, rather than players alphabetically. The NFL Media Access Policy makes the chart an official reference for a team’s published ordering.
Rank #2
A weekly chart is still a snapshot. It does not promise a receiver’s snaps, targets or routes, and it cannot rule out a later change to the order. Check the chart’s publication date against newer injury reports, coach comments, team updates and game-day inactives before relying on it for a current lineup decision.
Which source to use for each question
| Source | Best for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| NFL injury report | Standardized injury, practice participation and game-status fields | Filed on a schedule and may be updated after the initial report. |
| Official team site, app and press conferences | Team context, depth-chart order, transactions and coach comments | Depth charts are weekly snapshots; check the date and later updates. |
| NFL inactive report | Game-day inactive confirmation | It is a late check, not a replacement for earlier planning. |
| Third-party sports coverage | Finding a story or context | Verify important status claims against an NFL or team source; no single third-party outlet is established as universally authoritative. |
How to answer common lineup questions
“Is this receiver playing this week?”
Find his current game-status designation on the NFL report, then recheck the report and team updates for changes. Use the official inactive report close to kickoff for the final game-day check.

“What is the team’s latest wide receiver depth chart?”
Use the chart on the team’s official site or app and confirm its publication date. Compare it with newer team announcements and injury information; a chart’s ordering does not establish a specific role or workload.
“Who is starting at wide receiver?”
Use the team’s published chart for its expected starters, then check current availability and inactives. A listed starter may be unavailable by game time, and the chart does not predict how much he will play.
