To open the mine in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt quest “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow,” accept the quest from the Eternal Fire priest outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. He gives Geralt the mine key after the acceptance dialogue. Clear the bandits in Devil’s Pit, then use the key on the locked mine gate.
Where to get the mine key
Find the Eternal Fire priest, also described as a young deacon, outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. Speak with him and agree to help with “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow.” The key is handed over after you accept the quest; it is not an item you need to find inside the mine. TheSixthAxis walkthrough describes the handoff, and High on Films’ walkthrough corroborates the quest location and progression.
How to reach and open the mine gate
- Accept the quest in the conversation with the priest outside Devil’s Pit and finish the dialogue so the key is given to Geralt.
- Enter Devil’s Pit and defeat the bandits (deserters) blocking the route.
- Go down to the large mine entrance. At the locked gate, use the key from the priest to open it.
- Continue into the mine and follow the quest objective. The key only gets you through the entrance; the quest continues with further investigation and encounters. For broader objectives, see Gamer Guides’ quest guide.
If the key seems to be missing
A player on the Steam Community discussion reported that the key did not appear after speaking with the quest-giver. A reply suggested killing all the bandits and waiting for a cutscene, but that did not resolve the original player’s issue. This is an anecdotal report, not a confirmed fix.
- Confirm that you accepted “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow” and completed the priest’s dialogue.
- Check that the bandit encounter in Devil’s Pit is finished before returning to the gate.
- If the key is still absent, the available report does not establish a dependable remedy. Platform- and version-specific causes or fixes are not confirmed here.

“In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow” is a quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; VULKK’s walkthrough identifies it as Witcher 3 content. The route to the key and gate is straightforward: take the key from the priest, clear Devil’s Pit, and unlock the mine entrance.
