A remembered computer, sound, menu, setting, or way of playing can help you build a shortlist; period catalogs can then check whether each candidate fits your approximate year and platform. They can verify a game’s documented details, but not that you played it or that it shaped your tastes.
Begin with the memory you actually have
Before searching, jot down any small detail that comes back: a menu, sound, setting, control scheme, level, box image, or the computer it ran on. Add an approximate year and, if you can, whether the machine used DOS or Windows. These notes are simply a way to organize recollection, not a validated test of memory.
Include where you played and who was there, if you remember. A game played alone at home may leave a different impression from one shared with a sibling, passed around at school, or played competitively. These are clues to help you search and reflect, not proof of a game’s influence.
Use catalogs to narrow the candidates
Search with several clues together: platform, approximate release year, and genre. MobyGames offers catalog queries across genres, periods, and system requirements, and its DOS release-year listing shows how a year-and-platform filter can reduce the field. Its FAQ explains the catalog’s search flexibility.

Other discovery aids include the community-run DOS GAMES archive, which offers genre browsing, and the MobyGames project description, which explains its game-by-game cataloging aim. Treat these as starting points, not complete records of everything you may have encountered. Some early gaming sites have disappeared or stopped operating, as the DOS Games Archive About page notes.
Check each candidate against concrete clues
For each plausible title, compare its documented release period, platform, and genre with what you remember. Then consider its visual style and play pattern: did it involve exploration, tactical planning, fast reflexes, building, a story, competition, co-operation, or experimentation?

Keep the categories separate: a catalog can show that a game fits the documented metadata, while your notes record what you personally remember. A match does not establish that you played the game. If two or more titles fit, keep them on the list rather than forcing a confident identification.
Look for what the games had in common
Once you have a shortlist, ask what felt compelling about each candidate and what still appeals to you in games today. The influence may be a mechanic or a social setting shared by several games rather than one definitive title. For example, your strongest memories might point to planning and experimentation across different games, or to playing alongside other people. Treat those connections as personal reflection, not proof that a particular title caused a lasting preference.

- INCLUDES: 100 cards, score pad, pencil, instructions. For two or more players, ages: 12 and up.
When comparing several candidates, use the same axes for each:
- Period and platform: approximate year and the computer or operating system you remember.
- Genre and mechanics: what you did in the game, not just the label attached to it.
- Play setting: solo, local, or networked play, if you recall it.
- Memorable experience: the specific moment, feeling, or activity that drew you in.
Why the year and platform can matter
The PC landscape changed during the 1990s. MobyGames’ DOS history and release-year catalog describes DOS and IBM PC compatibles as widely used before Windows became the dominant PC platform. That makes an approximate year and operating system useful clues when narrowing candidates, but individual players’ experiences varied.

- The package height is 11.43 centimeters

Hardware and game design also changed over the decade. The Computer History Museum’s “Graphics & Games” history describes rising demand for higher-quality video cards as games developed more complex audio-visual requirements. This context can help make sense of remembered differences in appearance and sound; it cannot identify a game on its own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Replaying a game is optional
You do not need to replay a candidate to decide whether it is a plausible influence. If you want to revisit a DOS title, DOSGames.com describes DOSBox as a way to run most DOS software on a modern computer. Whether a particular game is available, compatible, or lawful to use depends on the game; the general DOSBox guidance does not settle those questions for every title.
