On an Xbox Series X or Series S, go to Settings → System → Console info and read the field labeled Serial number. For the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, remove the battery cover and read the serial-number label inside the battery compartment.
Find the serial number on an Xbox Series X or Series S
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open Profile & system, then select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Console info.
- Copy the value beside Serial number.
This is normally the quickest and clearest method. Menu wording can vary slightly with your language or Xbox system-software version. Copy every letter, number, hyphen, and leading zero exactly. Do not use the nearby Console ID, model number, or product ID unless Microsoft specifically asks for it. See the official guidance for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Find the serial number on an Xbox Wireless Controller
These steps apply primarily to the standard Xbox Wireless Controller supplied with or compatible with Xbox Series X|S:
- Turn the controller over.
- Slide or lift off the battery cover.
- Remove the batteries or rechargeable battery pack if it blocks the label.
- Read the number printed inside the battery compartment.
- Replace the batteries and cover.
The battery compartment may also contain regulatory information, a model number, or other markings. Use the line explicitly labeled Serial number, S/N, or SN. The controller serial number is different from the console serial number, the controller model number, its Bluetooth device name, and its firmware version. Microsoft illustrates the standard controller’s identifying information in its Xbox Series X|S Controller guide.

Elite, Design Lab, special-edition, accessibility, and third-party controllers may use a different label location or service process. Do not assume that every controller uses the standard battery-compartment layout.
If the console will not turn on
Look for the console’s identification label or barcode. Depending on the Series X or Series S model and hardware revision, the precise position can differ, so look for a marking labeled Serial Number, S/N, or SN rather than relying on a single location.

You can also check:
- The original retail box or shipping documentation.
- A retailer invoice, receipt, or order record, if the seller included the serial number.
- Your registered devices at account.microsoft.com/devices.
- Microsoft’s device-registration or service workflow.
Not every receipt includes a serial number, and a console will not necessarily appear in your Microsoft account. The device generally needs to have been registered or associated with that account, and availability can vary by region and service process.
If the controller is inaccessible or the label is damaged
For a standard controller, the battery compartment is the main physical source. If the label is worn or missing, check the original packaging and purchase records, then contact Xbox Support or use Microsoft’s controller service information at Xbox controller warranty and service.

The Xbox Accessories app can help identify and update compatible controllers, but do not assume it displays the serial number. Use a value from the app only when it is explicitly labeled Serial number. A controller name, firmware version, or hardware revision is not a substitute.
Serial number versus other Xbox identifiers
| Identifier | What it identifies | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Serial number | One specific physical console or controller | Microsoft asks for the device serial number, usually for service, warranty, registration, or support |
| Console ID | Another identifier shown in the console-information screen | Microsoft specifically requests the Console ID |
| Model number | A hardware model or product family | A form asks for the model, not the individual unit |
| Product ID or SKU | A sales, packaging, or catalog identifier | A retailer or product-listing form requests it |
| Gamertag or Microsoft account | The user or account | Account verification is requested; it does not identify the physical hardware |
A barcode may contain or encode a serial number, but when possible, use the number explicitly labeled as the serial number.

Troubleshooting serial-number problems
The label is difficult to read
- Photograph it in good lighting and enlarge the image.
- Clean only the surrounding surface gently; do not scrape or abrade the label.
- Compare the label with Settings → System → Console info if the console still starts.
- Check the box, invoice, retailer account, or Microsoft device record.
- Contact Xbox Support if the label is damaged or missing.
Do not guess ambiguous characters. Common mistakes include confusing 0 with O, 1 with I, 5 with S, and 8 with B. Also check for missing leading zeroes, letters, or hyphens.
Microsoft rejects the number
First check that you:
- Selected the correct console or controller.
- Entered the serial number rather than the Console ID or model number.
- Did not confuse a controller’s number with the console’s number.
- Copied the characters accurately and followed the form’s punctuation rules.
- Used the correct Microsoft account and region.
An automated lookup failure does not by itself mean the Xbox is counterfeit. It can result from a transcription error, an unregistered device, replacement hardware, refurbishment, a regional service limitation, or a service form requiring a different identifier.

What the serial number is used for
Microsoft or another legitimate support provider may request the serial number for:
- Warranty-status checks and service requests.
- Device registration and replacement cases.
- Technical support.
- Insurance or ownership records.
- Resale documentation.
- Distinguishing identical consoles or controllers.
A serial number identifies a physical device but does not independently prove ownership or determine warranty eligibility. Microsoft may also request proof of purchase, account details, region, purchase date, or other information.
