The next announced chance to see Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 and Living Legend No. 844 together is November 21, 2026, in Colorado. They are scheduled to pull a ticketed charitable ride from Greeley to Denver, then appear at a free public display at Denver Union Station. For other dates and places, check Union Pacific’s official steam schedule and Big Boy tracker: without your starting location, “near you” depends on which listed event you can reach.
What’s the next announced event?
Union Pacific announced that Big Boy No. 4014 and No. 844 will run together on a fundraising excursion from Greeley to Denver on November 21, 2026, followed by a public display at Denver Union Station. The display is free and open to the public; riding the train is a separate, ticketed event. See Union Pacific’s steam schedule and event information for current details.
The ride benefits Make-A-Wish and is for adults. Union Pacific’s October 5 announcement set October 16 as the start of ticket sales for museum patrons and October 19 for any remaining tickets to become available to the general public. Those dates do not establish whether tickets remain available now, so check the official event page for live inventory before making plans.
How to find an appearance near you
- Check the official schedule. Open Union Pacific’s steam schedule and look for future dates, cities, and event details.
- Track Big Boy No. 4014. Use the live Big Boy tracker for its location and route when tracking is available. The schedule is the better source for planned stops and public-display details.
- Get future announcements. Join the free Official Union Pacific Steam Club for tour, stop, and excursion notices concerning No. 844 and No. 4014.
- Compare the event with your own location. Check the listed city against your starting point and travel options; an event is not necessarily nearby just because it is on the schedule.
- Recheck before setting out. Operating plans and event details can change. Confirm the official event page close to your travel date.
Can you ride Big Boy or No. 844?
Sometimes, but a public display does not mean the public can board. Union Pacific says rides are rare and, when organized as charitable fundraisers, are generally one-day, one-way segments listed on its schedule. No future ride should be assumed unless the railroad announces it.

Which locomotive will you see?
- Big Boy No. 4014 is the only Big Boy still operating.
- Living Legend No. 844 is Union Pacific’s last steam locomotive built for the railroad.
The November 2026 event brings the two together in public for the first time since their 2019 joint appearance. Do not confuse No. 4014 with Big Boy No. 4004, which is permanently displayed at Holliday Park in Cheyenne, Wyoming; No. 4004 is not an operating excursion locomotive.

Are earlier 2026 tour stops still upcoming?
No. Union Pacific’s coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary has concluded. Its announced extended stops included Sacramento, Ogden, Omaha, West Chicago, Buffalo, Scranton, and Philadelphia, followed by return-trip stops in Altoona, Fostoria, and St. Louis. The western leg included 27 whistle-stops and four public display days. These are past tour details, not upcoming opportunities.
For context, Union Pacific described whistle-stops as generally lasting 15–30 minutes. That is a general duration, not a guaranteed viewing window or a substitute for checking the current itinerary.

What to expect at a public display
- Admission is generally free unless the schedule says otherwise. Capacity limits may mean waiting in line.
- Expect extended standing, potentially uneven surfaces, and no designated seating. Check the weather and dress accordingly.
- Union Pacific allows water bottles at display days and advises visitors to stay hydrated.
- Follow posted barriers and event-specific instructions. Drones are not allowed during display days.
Stay safe around the train
Union Pacific instructs visitors to remain at least 25 feet from the tracks when viewing or photographing the locomotive. Never stand on the tracks or ballast for a photo or video, and never climb onto a locomotive or other railroad equipment. Follow any additional event directions, especially when a locomotive is moving.
