How to Fit Vertical Devotional Videos in an OBS YouTube Stream in India

A practical guide to fitting portrait devotional videos in OBS without stretching them, including YouTube vertical layouts, dual-stream setup and preview checks.

To fit a portrait devotional video into an OBS-powered YouTube stream, preserve its proportions: build a vertical composition for a vertical-only stream, or use YouTube’s vertical layout options if you want both vertical and horizontal viewers. Never stretch a portrait clip to fill a landscape frame; it distorts the image. Preview the composition in YouTube Studio before going live, because YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after a stream has started.

Choose the format before setting up the scene

Start by deciding whether the stream should be vertical only or available in both orientations. That choice determines how you compose the devotional image, any prayer text or captions, and the rest of the scene.

For a vertical-only stream

Build the OBS scene around the portrait video and use a portrait canvas/output if your encoder and YouTube stream setup accept that format. OBS provides aspect-ratio controls, but the cited documentation does not give click-by-click instructions for a particular OBS version. Check YouTube’s vertical preview to confirm the result viewers will see on mobile.

For simultaneous horizontal and vertical viewers

YouTube’s Live Control Room can create both orientations. Its default vertical layout is a center crop of the horizontal stream; you can adjust the vertical canvas and choose another layout. If you use an external encoder such as OBS, YouTube’s documented workflow uses RTMP(S) and a second, vertical stream key. Send the matching video format to each key and inspect the vertical preview before starting.

Fit the video without distorting it

In OBS, select the video source and preserve its aspect ratio when resizing it. The exact menu wording can vary by OBS version, so use the transform or sizing controls that maintain the source’s proportions rather than stretching it. OBS explains that stretching mismatched content warps the image; enlarging it to fill a frame instead crops part of the source.

Portrait video on a landscape canvas

To show the whole portrait clip in a landscape scene, fit it within the frame and use the remaining side space deliberately—for example, with a restrained background or another scene element if it suits the design. Do not enlarge the clip until its top and bottom or sides are cut off unless that crop is intentional.

Landscape video in a vertical layout

A vertical crop of a wide video can remove important content at the sides. YouTube offers Center crop, Fit to phone width and Stacked layouts for its vertical feed, with controls to adjust zoom and position. Check that the devotional focal point remains visible in the selected composition.

Keep devotional details inside the visible area

Place the main image, faces, subtitles and embedded prayer or scripture text where the chosen crop will not remove them. Check legibility at the intended phone size. This is a composition precaution, not a special YouTube rule.

Compare YouTube’s vertical layout choices

Layout Useful when Trade-off
Center crop You want a quick vertical version of a wide scene. Side content can disappear; adjust zoom and position around the focal point.
Fit to phone width You want to preserve the source’s full width in a phone-oriented layout. Depending on the source and canvas, unused space may remain above or below.
Stacked You want separate content areas arranged vertically. It takes deliberate layout design and can make each element smaller.
Separate OBS vertical scene and stream You want a purpose-built portrait composition as well as landscape output. It requires a second vertical stream key and matching formats sent to the right keys.

Preview and start the stream

  1. Check access. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Confirm that live streaming is available for your account in YouTube Studio.
  2. Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and select the vertical layout or encoder-based setup you plan to use.
  3. Set up OBS and the stream key. For an external-encoder dual stream, use YouTube’s RTMP(S) workflow and its second vertical stream key. Match each output format to its corresponding key. Keep stream keys private.
  4. Inspect both previews. Check framing, devotional imagery, text and captions in the vertical preview, and check the horizontal preview too if you are streaming both formats. Adjust zoom and position before starting.
  5. Go live only after the layout is ready. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added once the stream has started, though the canvas layout can be edited while live.

What vertical changes for viewers

YouTube describes vertical live streams as a full-screen mobile experience and says viewers browsing Shorts may find them; that is a feature description, not a promise of reach. YouTube’s feature comparison also lists a scrollable live feed for vertical viewers and discoverability in the Shorts feed for vertical streams, while horizontal streams are not discoverable there.

Some features differ by orientation. YouTube lists clickable links in chat and channel descriptions, live ad midrolls and pre-rolls, Premieres, and Live Redirect as horizontal-only in its comparison; memberships and gifted memberships are listed for both. Eligibility and product behavior may affect availability. YouTube says subscribers receive one go-live notification with a shared stream URL; vertical-feed viewers see the vertical version, other viewers see the horizontal version, and both versions share live chat. Combined metrics appear in Live Control Room, while vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours after the stream.

India-specific considerations

The reviewed YouTube instructions do not specify a different OBS canvas procedure for India. They also do not establish a special Indian plugin, encoder or paid service requirement for this layout. Channel eligibility is account-specific, so confirm access in YouTube Studio. The same framing and preview steps apply to creators in India; there is no India-specific layout exception in the cited instructions.

Common fit problems and fixes

  • The portrait video looks wide or squashed: It has likely been stretched. Restore its proportions and fit it within the canvas; use background space rather than distorting the clip.
  • The deity image, text or face is cut off: The vertical crop is too tight or badly positioned. Reduce zoom or reposition the canvas, then recheck the vertical preview.
  • The portrait video has empty space on the sides: That is the expected result when fitting a portrait image into a landscape canvas without cropping. Keep the full image and design the unused area as part of the scene.
  • The vertical output is missing or wrong in a dual stream: Verify that the vertical output is sent to the second vertical stream key and that the format matches that key. Review YouTube’s preview before starting.
  • You cannot add vertical after going live: YouTube does not allow adding the vertical format after the stream has started. Stop and prepare the vertical layout for a new start rather than expecting to enable it midstream.
  • Live streaming is unavailable in Studio: Check channel verification and whether the account has a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. YouTube’s stated minimum age for live streamers is 16.

Copyright and devotional video checks

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the video, music, recording and any other material in the stream. A devotional subject does not by itself establish permission to use a particular recording or visual. YouTube’s live-streaming and copyright requirements can apply, so review the platform’s current guidance and your channel’s status before scheduling a broadcast. OBS is free software with no watermark or commercial-use limitation, and no physical product is required just to fit a portrait clip into a scene.
