Check those stages in order before changing settings: a running FFmpeg process or an “active” service does not prove that new video frames are reaching YouTube.
Why is my 24/7 YouTube live stream stuck on one video?
The frozen picture is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Trace the stream through five stages: source progression, encoder output, VPS resources and outbound network, YouTube ingestion, and the viewer’s player. The YouTube Live API exposes status and health information for the incoming stream; use those messages alongside your own timestamps and logs to locate the failure.
- Source: the intended file or playlist may have ended, repeated an item unexpectedly, or stopped decoding.
- Encoder: FFmpeg or OBS may have exited, stalled, encountered read or decode errors, or entered a reconnect loop.
- VPS: CPU or encoder saturation, unstable outbound connectivity, or insufficient sustained egress can interrupt delivery.
- YouTube: ingestion may be starved or another configuration issue may be reported in Live Control Room.
- Playback: if ingestion looks healthy and only some viewers see a freeze, the issue may be specific to their player or connection; the evidence does not establish one universal fix for that case.
For example, YouTube’s LiveStream health issue catalog defines videoIngestionStarved as insufficient incoming video for smooth playback, which can make viewers buffer. That is evidence of a feed problem, but it does not by itself identify whether the source, encoder, or network caused it.
How to diagnose the freeze from source to viewer
- Check that the source is advancing. Confirm which file or playlist item should be playing and whether the input timestamp advances past the freeze. Look for a finished playlist, an unintended repeated item, a still image, or a stalled decode. Record input and output timestamps around the time the picture stopped changing.
- Inspect the encoder and its logs. Check FFmpeg or OBS process state and logs at the same time. Look for process exits or restarts, read/decode errors, stalled output timestamps, encoder overload, and reconnect loops. A service manager reporting “active” only confirms its own process state; it does not confirm successful frame delivery.
- Read YouTube’s stream-health messages. Open the Live Control Room and note the health status, exact message or issue code, and timestamp. YouTube’s API health catalog covers issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, unsupported or missing audio, and starved video. Preserve the message before changing encoder settings.
- Compare the actual output with YouTube’s settings guidance. Check protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio against the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; a VPS provider’s advertised bandwidth does not show whether the host can sustain your selected rate.
- Check VPS resources and sustained egress. At the time of the freeze, inspect CPU load, encoder utilization where available, outbound throughput, packet loss or disconnects, and relevant system logs. A connection that cannot reliably sustain the configured bitrate can interrupt delivery even when the encoder process remains running. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Its Windows UI-specific suggestions are for OBS, not commands for an FFmpeg-only VPS.
- Change one setting or component at a time, then retest. Test with movement and audio similar to the real stream and watch YouTube’s health messages during the test. Record what changed and whether source and output timestamps advance, so the result points to a specific cause instead of several simultaneous changes.
- If YouTube reports healthy ingestion but viewers still see a freeze, gather playback evidence. Save the stream URL, time of the incident, health status, player and device details, browser if relevant, and whether other viewers reproduce it. Those details help distinguish a viewer-side problem from a feed issue; the cited sources do not prescribe a definitive fix for this situation.
Which encoder settings should you check?
Use the current YouTube table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you send. The figures below are YouTube recommendations on its encoder settings page as accessed on October 3, 2026; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the bitrate. Verify the page again before making a production change because guidance can change.

| Setting | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Protocol | YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. |
| Video codec and frame rate | YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with up to 60 fps. Confirm your encoder actually emits the selected codec and frame rate. |
| Keyframes | Two seconds is the recommended keyframe frequency; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s health catalog also flags open GOP as unsupported and warns that a long GOP/keyframe interval can contribute to buffering. |
| Bitrate examples: H.264 | For 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. For 720p30, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are different resolution rows, not interchangeable targets. |
| Audio | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps. Check for missing or unsupported audio if health messages report an audio issue. |
After selecting a bitrate from the appropriate row in YouTube’s current table, compare it with sustained VPS egress during the stream—not just a short peak or an advertised maximum. If the stream drops frames or disconnects, lower bitrate only when the evidence points to network capacity or stability, then retest. Keep a note of each change and its result.
How to keep a YouTube stream running from a VPS
For an FFmpeg-based setup, the troubleshooting steps above apply whether the process is started manually or supervised by a service manager. Confirm the media input and playlist advance, inspect FFmpeg’s output timestamps and logs, check that the process is not repeatedly restarting, and monitor host CPU and network egress. Then verify that the emitted codec, bitrate, keyframes, and audio conform to YouTube’s current guidance. The evidence available here does not establish a particular FFmpeg command, playlist implementation, VPS provider, or account configuration, so a precise fix depends on your actual command, logs, source progression, and contemporaneous YouTube health messages.

Common freeze symptoms and what to check
| Symptom or evidence | What it points to | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Input timestamp does not advance | Source, playlist, or decode progression | Confirm the intended item is playing, the playlist has not ended, and the source is not a still image or frozen decode. |
| Input advances but output timestamp stalls | Encoder or output path | Read encoder logs for read/decode errors, overload, exit/restart, or reconnect behavior. |
videoIngestionStarved appears in YouTube health |
YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth playback | Correlate the message time with encoder output, VPS egress, and network disconnect evidence. |
| Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects | Connection stability or capacity relative to bitrate | Measure sustained outbound throughput and packet loss; compare with the selected YouTube bitrate guidance. |
| Health is good, but only some viewers report a freeze | Playback-side path may be involved | Collect player, device, browser, URL, time, and reports from other viewers; do not assume the encoder is at fault. |
Costs and trade-offs of keeping the stream on a VPS
A VPS approach leaves you responsible for diagnosing the source, encoder, host capacity, network, and YouTube feed. Its actual cost depends on your provider and configuration; no provider pricing or specific VPS requirement is established here. When the evidence points to sustained egress or host-resource limitations, compare the capacity you need with the hosting plan’s actual terms rather than relying on a headline bandwidth figure. A cloud streaming service trades that server and encoder management for a hosted workflow; it is still important to check YouTube stream health and confirm the uploaded video or playlist is the one you intend to play.
