First check whether the black screen is in OBS’s preview or only on the receiving platform. If OBS’s preview is black, verify that the scene contains the right visible source and that its display, window, or application target is correct; then follow the checks for your operating system. If the preview looks right but the remote stream is black, that is a separate delivery problem, and the capture fixes below do not establish its cause.
Start by locating where the picture disappears
Look at the OBS preview or program output before changing settings. Identify what the nature ambience scene is supposed to show: a video file or media source, a live camera or capture card, a game, or a computer display or application window. “Display Capture” is only one possible source type; it is not automatically the right choice for a looped ambience clip or a live camera.
- OBS preview is black: troubleshoot the scene, source visibility, source target, and operating-system support.
- OBS preview looks correct, but the receiving platform is black: the scene is rendering locally, so do not assume a screen-capture change will fix the remote output. The OBS guidance cited here does not diagnose platform delivery; use platform-specific guidance for that symptom rather than guessing at an encoder, bitrate, ingest, or account change.
Check the scene, source, and target
- In the OBS scene you are using, confirm that the intended video source is present and visible. If the scene is meant to play a clip, inspect that media source; if it is meant to show a camera or external input, inspect that source instead of substituting Display Capture.
- Open the source’s properties. For a display, window, or application-capture source, select the intended display, window, or application. A valid source pointed at the wrong target can leave the scene showing no intended image.
- Check the source type against the operating system and version. OBS documents different screen-capture sources and availability for Windows, macOS, and Linux; do not apply another platform’s steps as if the labels and support were universal. OBS’s Sources Guide describes the source options.
Use the capture checks for your operating system
Windows: laptop with multiple GPUs
On some laptops, OBS and the display can be associated with different GPUs, which can affect display capture. The OBS Project Knowledge Base article “Laptop Troubleshooting,” published June 12, 2021, says a newer display-capture method is available from OBS 27 onward and requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later. It recommends trying the automatic method first; if that does not work, manually select the Windows 10 capture method. The article also recommends keeping OBS on the default high-power GPU and reverting a previous change to a power-saving GPU.
- Verify your OBS and Windows versions before relying on those minimum-version instructions; the guide dates to 2021, so available settings and labels may differ in current installations.
- In the display-capture source properties, try the automatic capture method first.
- If the automatic method does not work and the option is available, select the Windows 10 capture method.
- If you previously assigned OBS to a power-saving GPU, revert that change to the default high-power GPU setting, then check the preview again.
See the OBS Laptop Troubleshooting guide for its documented procedure.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
macOS: match the capture source to macOS
OBS lists macOS Screen Capture for macOS 13 or later. It can capture a display, a single window, or visible windows of a selected application. The older Display Capture source is listed for macOS 10.15 through 12.6 and marked deprecated from macOS 13 onward. Choose the source intended for your installed macOS version, then verify that its selected display, window, or application is the one containing the image you need.

If OBS is capturing itself instead of showing the scene
If you see a repeating tunnel of OBS windows, that is the Video Feedback Effect, not a black-screen fault. It occurs when OBS captures the display on which OBS itself is visible. Minimize OBS to remove its window from the captured image. OBS also documents ways to hide its window from capture on Windows and macOS 13 or later; on macOS 13 or later, use a macOS Screen Capture source in Display Capture mode for the documented approach.
See OBS’s Video Feedback Effect guidance for the relevant platform-specific options.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS preview is black for a video clip | Confirm the intended media source is in the scene and visible; do not assume display capture is the correct source for a clip. |
| OBS preview is black for a display, window, or application | Check the source properties and select the correct target. Then confirm the capture source is supported for your operating system and version. |
| Display capture is black on a Windows laptop | Check OBS and Windows versions, try the automatic method and, if available, the Windows 10 capture method; review whether OBS was assigned to a power-saving GPU. |
| Display or window capture is black on macOS | Match the source to the macOS version: OBS lists macOS Screen Capture for macOS 13 or later and marks the older Display Capture deprecated from macOS 13 onward. |
| OBS shows an infinite repetition of its own window | Minimize OBS or use the applicable OBS-documented method to hide its window from capture. |
| OBS preview is correct, but the remote platform is black | Treat this as a delivery issue distinct from scene capture. The cited OBS source guidance does not establish a platform-specific cause or fix. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the nature ambience stream is a pre-recorded video for YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS and a computer running at home:
- Upload the recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
