Start by finding where the picture first disappears: check the OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If OBS itself is black, investigate the source, capture method, and graphics available to the VPS. If a local recording looks right but YouTube does not, focus on encoder output, stream health, and the outbound connection. There is no single confirmed fix for every OVHcloud VPS because the operating system, VPS plan, GPU exposure, OBS version, and source type all matter.
Find where the video becomes black
Run these checks in order, using the same scene and representative content throughout:
- OBS preview: Is the intended source visible in the active scene?
- Local recording: Make a short recording and inspect the saved file. Does it contain the picture and audio you expect?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Check the preview and any stream-health or encoder messages.
- Public watch page: If the Control Room preview works, check whether the public playback differs.
This comparison narrows down the fault. A black preview or local recording points toward the OBS source, capture, rendering, or encoding path. If the local file looks correct but YouTube’s preview is black or unhealthy, examine the stream output and connection to YouTube. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and outbound connectivity when troubleshooting live video: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
If the OBS preview or local recording is black
Confirm the source exists in the VPS session
Check that the intended source is present and visible in the active scene, and that the window, display, game, browser, media file, or capture device you selected is actually available inside the VPS session. The correct remedy depends on the source type and guest operating system. Inspect the OBS log and the graphics devices visible to the guest before changing drivers, installing capture plug-ins, or switching GPUs.

OBS lists DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics for Windows and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics for Linux/Unix among its system requirements. Those are compatibility baselines, not a promise of usable streaming performance. OBS puts it plainly: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See the OBS system requirements.
Check display-capture compatibility on Windows
For Windows display capture, OBS documents its newer capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or newer and OBS 27 or newer. If display capture fails, its guide suggests manually selecting the Windows 10 capture method. The same guide discusses historical multi-GPU capture issues and a high-power GPU preference for laptops. A VPS may not expose multiple physical GPUs or the same display surfaces as a laptop, so first establish which graphics adapters and display session the guest actually has. Separate a black source from a black output
If the preview shows the picture but the recording or stream does not, compare the output path and inspect the OBS log rather than assuming the capture source is at fault. The available documentation does not establish a specific cause for that symptom on an unspecified OVHcloud VPS. Record the OBS version, guest OS, source type, and relevant log or statistics before making a targeted change.
Check for rendering or encoding overload
OBS uses GPU time to compose and render scenes. Complex scenes or other GPU-intensive work can leave too little capacity for OBS; rendering or encoding overload should be addressed when OBS statistics or logs actually show it. Reduce scene complexity or output workload, then repeat the local recording test. These steps can relieve a demonstrated performance bottleneck, but overload is not established as the cause of every black screen. See the OBS guide to rendering and encoding overload.

- Check OBS statistics and logs for rendering or encoding warnings.
- Check the guest’s CPU and GPU utilization while reproducing the issue.
- If a bottleneck is visible, simplify the scene or reduce output demand and test again.
If the local recording is good but YouTube is black
In Live Control Room, inspect the preview, stream-health messages, encoder errors, and CPU load. Compare those results with the local recording. YouTube notes that a healthy-looking encoder output can point toward an outbound internet problem, while poor-looking output can indicate an issue with the audio or video sources routed to the encoder. If the encoder cannot start, verify that OBS is using the intended stream key. If the outbound path appears suspect, test the connection’s upload capacity. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
Use encoder settings that match the stream profile
For standard RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; recommends CBR bitrate mode; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Supported audio options include AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching profile rather than treating one number as a universal fix. For example, YouTube’s guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are encoder configuration recommendations for those specific profiles, not diagnoses of a black screen. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Test before going live
Before relying on the stream, test with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitor audio and video quality while live. YouTube outlines these checks in its live-streaming tips.

The term “OVHcloud VPS” does not identify a plan or prove that the guest has a GPU. The cited OVHcloud documentation concerns Public Cloud GPU instances, not every VPS offer. OVHcloud says these instances use PCI passthrough so the guest operating system can control the GPU much as it would on a physical machine. Model, region, image, and driver compatibility still matter; its support documentation also identifies Windows image requirements for NVIDIA GPU instances. Check the current requirements for the specific offer and region before migrating: OVHcloud GPU instance documentation and OVHcloud GPU support guidance.

A GPU instance is worth considering only if diagnosis shows that the current guest lacks graphics capability needed by the chosen capture or encoding setup. It will not, by itself, correct a hidden or misconfigured OBS source, an incompatible capture method, or a YouTube ingest problem.

For a case-specific diagnosis, note the guest OS and version, exact OVHcloud offer and region, whether a GPU appears inside the guest, OBS version, source type, and whether the preview and local recording are black. Include relevant OBS log and statistics evidence when seeking support.
