Start by checking the encoder preview: if the picture is already black there, fix the video source, scene, or encoder before changing YouTube settings. If the preview and local recording show picture but YouTube does not, inspect Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages and verify the outgoing stream configuration. This sequence helps identify whether the fault is in the file, encoder, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback.
Why is my YouTube live stream showing a black screen?
A successful connection to YouTube does not prove that the encoder is sending video. The quickest way to narrow down a black screen is to compare what appears at each stage:
- The media source: Does the prerecorded file itself play with picture in a local player?
- The encoder preview and local archive: Is the picture visible in the active scene and in a local recording, if you have one?
- YouTube’s ingest: Does Live Control Room show the expected picture, and does its health indicator report an error?
- Viewer playback: Is the issue reported by one viewer, people on one shared network, or viewers on different networks?
If the encoder preview and local archive are black, start with the file, scene, source visibility, routing, and encoder. If they show picture, check YouTube’s health messages and stream settings next. This is a diagnostic guide, not a guarantee: encoder and operating-system menus vary, and the cause depends on the setup.
Fix the source or encoder if its preview is black
1. Confirm the prerecorded video plays
Open the exact file you intend to stream in a local media player. Confirm that it has a visible picture throughout the section you are testing, not just audio. If the file is black locally, the problem is upstream of YouTube: check that you selected the intended file and that it plays correctly before troubleshooting the live connection.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check the active scene and video routing
In your encoder, confirm that the intended scene is active, the media source is visible and playing, and the source’s video is included in the outgoing scene. A source can be loaded without being visible in the scene being sent. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the stream directly in the encoder and checking whether the audio and video sources are routed to it correctly (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
3. Compare the preview with a local archive
If you have a local recording of the outgoing stream, inspect it alongside the encoder preview. If both lack picture, focus on the file, active scene, source visibility, routing, or encoder before changing YouTube settings. If the source and archive look right but the encoder’s outgoing result does not, update the encoder to its latest version. YouTube also suggests trying a different encoder when the sources and archive appear sound but the output remains faulty (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).

Why does OBS show video but YouTube is black?
If the encoder preview and local archive contain picture, the fault is more likely after the local preview: check YouTube’s ingest view, timestamped errors, outgoing resolution and frame rate, and outbound connection. The same diagnostic applies to other encoders; exact menus differ by software and operating system.
Read Live Control Room’s health messages
Open the scheduled or active stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the health indicator and the errors shown beside it. YouTube displays timestamps for errors; red messages are critical, while yellow messages indicate a moderate issue that may affect quality. Use the wording of the error to choose what to change rather than altering settings at random. The error reference covers issues including absent video, unsupported formats, resolution and bitrate mismatches, frame rate, and keyframe interval (YouTube Live Control Room errors).

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s settings
Check the configuration actually being sent by the encoder, not only the settings shown in a saved profile. YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Confirm that the outgoing resolution and frame rate agree with the ingest setup, and act on a matching health message if YouTube identifies an unsupported or mismatched setting (YouTube encoder settings).
Do not switch codecs or change unrelated settings without a reason. If the dashboard identifies a missing video stream, unsupported video setting, or mismatch, address that specific configuration first.

What if the stream is black only for viewers?
Ask whether the same symptom occurs for other viewers, then compare their connection circumstances. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance uses the pattern of reports to help localize the problem:
- One viewer: The viewer’s device or connection is a likely place to investigate.
- Several viewers on one shared connection: The shared network may be involved.
- Viewers on different networks: If your encoder output appears healthy, investigate the encoder’s outbound connection and YouTube ingest.
YouTube recommends testing outbound internet strength when local output is healthy; contact your internet service provider if the test indicates a connection problem (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting). These patterns point to where to investigate, but do not prove a single cause.

Test a prerecorded stream before the next broadcast
YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health while live. For a prerecorded broadcast, use the actual file and intended scene so the test exercises the media source and routing you plan to use. Include audio and movement similar to the broadcast, then check that the encoder preview, local archive if available, and YouTube ingest all show picture. Keep Live Control Room’s health messages visible during the test so you can catch and address a timestamped error before relying on the stream (YouTube encoder settings and testing guidance).
Optional: dedicated hardware for scheduled prerecorded playout
If you need a dedicated hardware workflow rather than an unexplained black-screen repair, YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream, which can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer (YouTube Live verified devices and encoders). It is an optional workflow, not a fix for a black source file, incorrect scene routing, unsupported settings, or a connection fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is continuous prerecorded YouTube streaming rather than diagnosing a one-off encoder fault, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos sent to YouTube, not camera streaming. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
