If a sermon video’s audio plays but its picture is black in OBS, first check the Media Source file, visibility, and scene layering. If you use a playlist, check the VLC Video source and VLC installation. Then verify the outgoing picture in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting your stream.
Find where the picture disappears
Check the video in three places: a regular media player, the OBS preview, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. This narrows down whether the issue is with the file, the OBS scene, or the stream output. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream: YouTube streaming tips.
- Black in a regular media player: Test another known-good video file. This practical check helps distinguish file playback trouble from an OBS scene issue.
- Picture works outside OBS but is black in OBS: Check the source’s file selection, visibility, and position in the scene.
- OBS preview looks right but YouTube’s preview is black: The issue is downstream of the local scene. Check the stream output and confirm the picture in Live Control Room before going live.
Audio playing while the picture is black is useful evidence, but does not by itself identify one cause. There is no universal black-screen fix established for every OBS setup.
Fix a single-video Media Source
For one local sermon recording, OBS’s Media Source is the direct option. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; actual playback still depends on the file working in your setup. See OBS Media Sources.

- In OBS, select the scene used for the stream.
- In the Sources list, confirm the intended Media Source is present and its visibility (the eye icon) is on.
- Right-click the source and choose Properties.
- Confirm Local File points to the sermon video you intend to play. Select the correct file if it does not.
- Enable Loop so playback restarts when the video finishes. Loop is off by default.
- Check the preview. Make sure the source is not covered by an opaque source above it in the Sources list. If the picture disappears at the end of playback, check Show nothing when playback ends; OBS documents this option as on by default.
If the video plays outside OBS but the preview remains black after these checks, try removing and adding the Media Source again, then select the file anew. Treat that as an isolation step, not a guaranteed fix.
Check VLC Video when using a playlist
Use VLC Video when you need a playlist or VLC-supported media handling rather than a single built-in Media Source. This is a source choice, not a guaranteed black-screen remedy. OBS requires VLC to be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default for VLC Video. See OBS Media Sources.

- Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Open the VLC Video source properties and verify the playlist contains the intended sermon file.
- Check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Confirm the source is visible and not covered in the active scene.
Separate a black picture from a performance problem
If the picture appears but playback or output is choppy or stalls, investigate performance separately from a source that is simply black. OBS explains that it uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes, and competing GPU-heavy programs can affect performance. Simplify the scene and close unnecessary GPU-intensive applications, then check the preview again. This may help a performance problem; OBS does not identify GPU load as the cause of every black local source. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Check the stream before viewers see it
- Start a test or unlisted stream if that option is available to you.
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and inspect its preview before starting the public stream.
- Confirm both picture and sound, and continue monitoring them during the stream.
If the OBS preview is correct but YouTube’s preview is not, avoid assuming that a change to the local media source will fix it: the symptom appears later in the path. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring stream quality, but do not diagnose a specific OBS source failure.
