First find out where the picture disappears: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only on YouTube Live. If OBS’s preview is black, troubleshoot the scene and capture source. If the preview and recording look right but the YouTube stream is black, investigate the live output path separately; a capture fix will not explain a problem that appears only after OBS sends the stream.
Identify where the screen turns black
Before changing settings, keep the same scene and content on screen and compare three views. This separates a capture problem from a problem in the path to YouTube.
- OBS preview is black: start with the active scene, source visibility, source type, and whether the source is targeting the right game or window.
- Preview looks right, but a local recording is black: check that the recording is using the expected scene and output, then test again while the target application is visible.
- Preview and local recording look right, but YouTube Live is black: treat this as a stream-only issue. The official OBS guidance cited here does not establish one universal YouTube-specific fix; collect the OBS log and the details listed below before changing unrelated capture settings.
Write down your operating system and version, OBS version, source type (game, window, display, or browser video), GPU setup, and whether the failure occurs in preview, recording, or only on YouTube. The right steps depend on those details.
Fix a black OBS preview
Confirm the scene and source
- In OBS, select the scene you intend to send live.
- In the Sources list, check that the intended source is present and enabled. A hidden or disabled source cannot appear in the preview.
- Open the source’s properties and verify that it targets the correct application, game, or display. For a capture-specific-window Game Capture source, the game must be running and selected.
- If several sources overlap, temporarily hide the others to check whether one is covering the picture.
OBS has distinct Game Capture modes, including fullscreen capture, capture of a specific window, and hotkey-controlled capture. Use the mode that matches how the target application is running; a source configured for the wrong mode or target may stay blank. OBS’s Game Capture guide explains the available modes.

Match the capture source to the content
Game Capture is intended for supported games; it is not a universal way to capture every application. If OBS cannot hook into the target, try Window Capture. For some titles, OBS recommends running the game in windowed or borderless fullscreen mode and capturing its window. OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide lists application-specific cases and alternatives.
Display Capture can be a useful comparison when diagnosing ordinary desktop capture: if the desktop appears but the Game Capture source does not, the issue is more likely specific to the game capture path. It is not an appropriate fix for every setup or protected video. Do not assume that a black video-player area can be made capturable by changing capture modes.

Check GPU assignment on a multi-GPU computer
On some systems, the game and OBS can be assigned to different GPUs, which can interfere with Game Capture. OBS generally advises using the high-performance GPU for both. Laptop behavior and the right configuration depend on the capture method, Windows version, OBS version, and hardware, so follow the current OBS laptop troubleshooting guide rather than applying old GPU-switching advice to every machine.
The newer Display Capture method described in that OBS guide requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. Those are requirements for that method, not a guarantee that every capture setup will work.

Rule out overlays and hooking software
Close overlays, FPS counters, and other utilities that interact with games, then test Game Capture again. Change one thing at a time so you can identify a conflict. OBS specifically notes RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) and MSI Afterburner as common conflicts; newer RTSS versions also have an OBS-compatible setting described in the OBS troubleshooting guide.
Test fullscreen behavior and permissions
Some fullscreen games stop rendering when minimized or moved out of focus. Keep the game visible while testing—on a second monitor if available—or make a short test recording before concluding that capture has failed. OBS documents this behavior in its Game Capture troubleshooting guidance.

Only for a game that appears to require it, try running OBS as administrator as a diagnostic. If that does not change the result, return to normal permissions; elevated access is not a general requirement for OBS.

If the desktop or application frame is visible but the video inside a player is black, playback restrictions or browser rendering behavior may be involved. YouTube’s help page discusses hardware acceleration while troubleshooting a green video-player screen, but that does not establish disabling acceleration as a general OBS black-screen fix. You can use YouTube’s documented troubleshooting steps as context, but do not assume a setting change will make restricted or protected content capturable: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot video playback issues.

If OBS looks right but the YouTube stream is black
When both the OBS preview and a local recording show the intended picture, the capture source is producing an image locally. Check the live path without assuming the game capture source is at fault:
- Compare the OBS preview with the program or output being sent live, if your scene setup uses a separate program view. Confirm the intended scene is the one going out.
- Check YouTube’s live view while the stream is active and compare it with a fresh local recording of the same content.
- If the YouTube output alone remains black, save the OBS log and note your OBS version, operating system, source type, and GPU setup before seeking support. Those details help distinguish a stream-output problem from a capture problem.
The available official guidance does not establish a single YouTube-only cure for this symptom, so avoid repeatedly changing capture settings that already produce a correct preview and recording.
Check system capability before changing quality
A computer that meets baseline compatibility requirements is not necessarily able to handle every resolution, frame rate, encoder, or complex scene. OBS recommends considering the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity when assessing performance. Its published baseline requirements list Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, and macOS 11 or later; these are compatibility baselines, not performance guarantees.
