How to Fix a Controller Not Working in Apex Legends on PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apex Legends officially supports modern Xbox and PlayStation controllers on PC. The fastest reliable diagnosis is to connect the pad by USB, test it in Windows, disconnect every other input device, close remappers and overlays, then test the correct Steam or EA app input path. If the controller fails Windows’ own test, Apex settings cannot fix it; if Windows sees it normally, focus on the launcher and competing input layers.

These steps apply to Xbox One and Series controllers, DualShock 4, DualSense, and many XInput-compatible third-party pads. Generic DirectInput devices, Nintendo Switch controllers and unusual adapters may need a compatibility layer and are not covered by EA’s same native-support guarantee.

Start with the symptom

“Not working” can indicate several different faults. Use the matching branch rather than changing every setting at once.

  • No buttons work anywhere: Windows may not detect the pad, another device may be Player 1, or Steam Input, an emulator or an overlay may be intercepting input.
  • Menus work but a match does not: Apex may have changed focus to mouse and keyboard, or a second physical or virtual controller may be taking priority.
  • Only some buttons work: Check the Steam layout, XInput/DirectInput compatibility, cable and Apex bindings.
  • Xbox icons appear on a PlayStation pad: Steam Input is probably presenting it as an XInput device. That is normally a display difference, not a failed controller.
  • Movement or aim drifts: Test for stick hardware problems, calibration, dead-zone settings and duplicate virtual input.
  • The pad disconnects: Investigate Bluetooth pairing, battery, cable, USB power management and firmware.

Quick isolation checklist

  1. Close Apex completely and connect one controller directly to the PC with a known data-capable USB cable, not a hub.
  2. Try another USB port and cable. USB removes Bluetooth pairing, battery and radio-interference variables.
  3. Turn off every other gamepad, wheel, flight stick, fight stick, USB adapter and remote-play virtual controller.
  4. Temporarily close DS4Windows, XOutput, reWASD, JoyToKey, Razer Synapse, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GeForce Experience, EA and Steam overlays. These programs can compete for input or create duplicate devices; they are not automatically incompatible in every setup.
  5. Start the launcher with the controller already connected, use the controller on Apex’s title screen, and test in the Firing Range.

Steam recommends unplugging other gamepads and disabling XInput emulators during diagnosis. Its documentation also describes a four-device XInput limit in relevant configurations: Steam controller troubleshooting and XInput device guidance.

  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.

Check whether Windows detects the controller

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter joy.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the controller, choose Properties, and open the Test tab.

A working test shows button presses, both sticks and each trigger moving smoothly. Check whether the pad appears more than once. Microsoft documents this test route at its game-controller troubleshooting guide.

  • Missing from joy.cpl: repair the cable, USB port, Bluetooth pairing, firmware, Windows driver or hardware before changing Apex.
  • Listed but inputs fail: the controller or driver is malfunctioning; Apex bindings will not repair it.
  • Works normally: continue with the launcher-specific steps below.

Steam version: test the input layer deliberately

Steam Input can translate a DualShock 4 or DualSense into XInput, but it can also alter button prompts, duplicate a physical device or conflict with native handling.

  1. Exit Apex.
  2. In Steam Library, right-click Apex Legends and open Properties.
  3. Open Controller.
  4. Test the available Steam Input override choices one at a time. Steam’s labels can change, so test the option that enables Steam Input and the option that leaves the game to use native input.
  5. After each change, fully restart Apex. If necessary, exit Steam, reconnect the controller and restart Steam as well.

For an Xbox controller, try native handling first. For a PlayStation controller, Steam Input may be the layer that makes it visible to Apex, but native handling can be cleaner when it already works. Steam says its controller configuration depends on the Steam Overlay; if Shift + Tab does not open it, Steam Input may not apply correctly. This concerns Steam’s configuration system, not proof that Apex itself requires the overlay. See Steam’s conflicting-program and overlay guidance.

EA app version: remove conflicts, repair, then clear cache

  1. Connect the controller before launching the EA app.
  2. Open Library, select Apex and launch it directly through the EA app while testing.
  3. Disable the EA overlay and other overlays temporarily.
  4. In the game’s Manage or three-dot menu, choose Repair, wait for it to finish, then relaunch.
  5. If the launcher still behaves incorrectly, open the three-line EA app menu, choose Help → App Recovery → Clear Cache, restart the EA app and test again.

EA documents game repair in its crash and freezing guidance and installation troubleshooting. The cache procedure is at EA app cache clearing. Cache clearing cannot resolve an EA server outage.

Controller-specific checks

Xbox controllers

Update firmware with Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app, preferably while connected by USB. Steam’s Xbox firmware instructions are at this support page. Also install Windows updates and current Bluetooth and motherboard USB drivers.

DualShock 4 and DualSense

EA confirms PlayStation controller support on PC, but firmware or drivers may be required when a device is not detected. Steam Input can expose the pad as an Xbox-style XInput controller, so Xbox prompts are expected in that configuration. They do not by themselves indicate failure. EA’s support guidance is download and play EA app games, and its Apex FAQ is at the official Apex FAQ.

Bluetooth works nowhere, but USB does

Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth devices, restart the PC, put the pad into pairing mode and pair it again. Reduce Wi-Fi/Bluetooth interference, keep the controller near the PC antenna, check battery level and update firmware. USB is the best diagnostic and often the most stable choice for competitive play.

Generic or third-party pads

A device can appear in Windows yet expose DirectInput rather than XInput, which Apex may not interpret correctly. Prefer a controller that explicitly supports standard XInput if replacing hardware becomes necessary. Do not install unofficial driver-updater utilities.

Fix partial input, drift and double input

  • Run joy.cpl again and watch whether a stick moves while untouched or a trigger fails independently.
  • Disconnect every physical and virtual controller, then close all wrappers and emulators. Running Steam Input, DS4Windows and another mapper together can produce double presses, phantom Player 1 devices and prompt switching.
  • Restore a standard Apex button preset and remove custom Steam layouts temporarily.
  • After hardware input is clean, adjust Apex dead-zone settings for minor drift. Persistent movement in Windows indicates a hardware or calibration problem instead.

Firmware, drivers and connection recovery

Use Windows Update, the controller manufacturer, Microsoft or Sony—not random driver sites. Update Windows, Bluetooth and chipset/USB drivers. If the controller fails in every game and on another PC or console, contact the manufacturer; if it fails only in Apex after Windows tests pass, keep working through the Steam or EA branch.

What not to do

  • Do not reinstall Apex before testing joy.cpl, removing conflicting input layers, repairing files and clearing the EA cache.
  • Do not delete Apex configuration files without a verified current path and a backup; doing so can remove sensitivity, video, audio and keybind preferences.
  • Do not stack multiple remappers to force a fix.
  • Do not use Cronus, XIM, Strike Pack or similar input-manipulation hardware. EA’s March 4, 2026 anti-cheat update says such devices can manipulate input and are treated as cheating in Apex: EA anti-cheat update.

Use this decision table

Symptom Likely layer First action
Absent from Windows Cable, Bluetooth, firmware, driver or hardware Test joy.cpl
Works in Windows, not Steam Apex Steam Input, overlay, layout or extra device Test Steam Input choices and restart Apex
Works in Windows, not EA Apex EA launch path, overlay, emulator or firmware Launch directly through EA app; close remappers
PlayStation pad shows Xbox prompts XInput translation Treat as a prompt issue unless controls fail
USB works, Bluetooth fails Pairing, interference, battery or driver Re-pair and update firmware
Stick moves alone Drift, dead zone or duplicate input Test in joy.cpl, then check dead zone
Fails in every game Windows or controller hardware Troubleshoot the controller, not Apex

When to contact support

  • Microsoft or the controller manufacturer: the device is absent or faulty in joy.cpl, firmware will not update, or it disconnects across games.
  • Sony: a DualShock 4 or DualSense has firmware, pairing or hardware problems outside Apex.
  • Steam: the controller works in Windows but Steam’s configuration or overlay fails.
  • EA: the controller works in Windows and other games but Apex or the EA app still ignores it after repair, cache clearing and input-layer tests.
