If a Metro game stopped launching after an upgrade, first identify the exact game and edition, then work through restart, updates, file verification, background software, and edition-specific requirements. An upgrade may be related, but it does not by itself identify the cause: Steam notes that launch failures can arise from many hardware and software configurations.
First, identify what changed
Before changing settings, write down the exact Metro title and edition, your launcher, Windows version, and what you mean by “upgrade.” It could be a Windows update, graphics-driver update, new hardware, a game patch, or a switch between editions. Note the complete error message and whether the game appears briefly in Task Manager before closing. These details help separate a launch failure from an edition or compatibility mismatch.

Steam describes launch failures as difficult to diagnose across varied hardware and software setups, so its checklist is a first-pass troubleshooting process—not a diagnosis. See Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
Try these general PC checks in order

Restart the PC
Restart Windows, then try launching the game again from its usual launcher. This is a simple first check after an update or driver change.

Install applicable Windows and graphics-driver updates
Check Windows Update and install applicable updates. Then check for a current graphics driver from the GPU maker or your PC manufacturer. Steam’s general checklist recommends updating Windows and component drivers; avoid assuming a particular driver is at fault unless the error or a rollback test points to it.

Verify the game’s files in its launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in option to check or repair the installation. Steam explains that damaged or incomplete extracted game files can prevent a game from running and links to its file-verification instructions. If you use Epic or another launcher, follow that launcher’s current official instructions rather than applying Steam’s menu steps.

Temporarily close nonessential background software
Close nonessential applications and overlays, then test the game. If it launches, reopen applications one at a time to identify a possible conflict. Restore normal settings afterward; do not permanently disable security software as a routine fix.

Check requirements for your exact Metro edition
Compare your PC with the current requirements listed for the game and edition in your launcher. A requirements mismatch can explain why an edition will not run, but it does not prove the cause of an individual failure.

Check Metro Exodus versus Enhanced Edition carefully
Metro Exodus and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition have different GPU compatibility. Steam’s listing explicitly says Enhanced Edition requires an Nvidia RTX or AMD RX GPU. If you switched editions or installed Enhanced Edition after a hardware change, confirm your GPU meets that requirement before pursuing other fixes.

These figures are the original game’s Steam listing, not universal requirements for every Metro game or edition. Check the current listing for your exact edition and platform. Also distinguish a game page’s legacy operating-system requirement from launcher support: Steam says its client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. An older game listing that names Windows 7 or 8 does not establish that the current Steam client supports those systems.
Epic’s FAQ records historical original-game PC requirements and says RTX features required Windows 10 RS5 (Build 1809) or newer and DirectX 12. Its storefront information dates to 2019, so do not use it as a current source for purchasing or distribution details.

If it still will not start, contact official support
Use PLAION’s METRO Exodus help center to find its FAQ, system-requirements information, and support-ticket route. Include:
- The exact game and edition, launcher, and Windows version or build
- Your GPU model and driver version
- What changed immediately before the problem began
- The complete error message, or a note that no message appears
- Whether the game appears in Task Manager before closing
- Which checks you tried and what happened after each one
That information gives support a clearer starting point than saying only that the game will not launch after an upgrade.
