If your microphone is not working in a Steam game, first find out whether Windows, Steam, or the game itself is failing to capture or transmit your voice. Check the microphone in Windows, test it in Steam, then check the game’s input device and voice controls. A microphone working in Discord—or in Steam chat—does not guarantee the game is using that same input.
For a quick first pass: turn off the headset’s mute switch, connect the microphone before launching the game, confirm Windows’ input test responds, select the physical microphone in Steam’s Voice settings, and relaunch the game. Then check whether the game uses open mic or push-to-talk and whether its voice channel is muted.
Find the layer that is failing
“Steam game voice” can mean Steam client voice chat, a game that uses Steam’s voice features, or a game’s own voice-chat system. Games can integrate Steam Voice, but not every Steam game uses the same voice system or settings. See Steamworks’ voice documentation.

If you can hear other players but cannot speak, focus on the microphone input and transmission controls. If nobody can hear anyone, the game’s voice service, lobby, or network may be involved as well.
1. Check the microphone and its connection
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch, inline controls, and any mute button in headset software. Make sure a detachable boom is fully seated.
- Unplug and reconnect the microphone. For USB, try another port and temporarily bypass a hub or dock.
- For a 3.5 mm headset, try the rear motherboard audio port if you are using the case’s front port. If you use a splitter or adapter, bypass it temporarily if possible.
- For Bluetooth, make sure the headset is connected—not merely paired—and note which microphone device Windows exposes.
- If the microphone still does not appear in Windows, test it on another device if you can. That helps distinguish a PC configuration issue from a faulty headset or cable.
A working microphone in another app is useful evidence, but it does not prove Steam or the game is selecting the same input. Facepunch’s microphone troubleshooting guide also recommends checking connections, trying another sound port, and reviewing Steam’s voice input device.
2. Give desktop apps microphone access in Windows
Steam and most PC games are desktop applications. Make sure desktop-app microphone access is enabled; desktop programs may not appear as separate entries in Windows’ app list.

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Windows 10
Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Turn on Allow access to the microphone on this device, Allow apps to access your microphone, and Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.

If the microphone is built into a webcam, check whether camera access also needs to be enabled. After changing privacy settings, close and reopen Steam and the game. Microsoft’s Windows microphone troubleshooting guide covers both Windows 10 and 11.
3. Select and test the microphone in Windows
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Input. Select the intended microphone under Choose a device for speaking or recording, open its properties, and run Start test. Speak normally, stop the test, and play the recording. Raise Input volume if the recording is too quiet.

In Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Input, choose the microphone, and check Test your microphone. The input meter should react while you speak.
Expected result: the meter moves or the test recording contains your voice. If it does not, stay in Windows troubleshooting for now: check mute, input selection, permissions, connection, and volume before changing game settings.
4. Set the right Windows default device
Windows has a general default device and may also have a default communications device. An application can also have its own microphone selection. If apps keep choosing the wrong input, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording, right-click the intended microphone, and set it as the default device. If available, set it as the default communications device too.

For diagnosis, selecting the physical microphone explicitly in Steam and the game is often more reliable than leaving them on Default. Steam says its voice chat follows the Windows recording and playback defaults when its devices are set to Default; see Steam’s voice-chat device guidance.

This can reveal whether an app is choosing the wrong source. Re-enable anything you need for streaming, recording, accessibility, or audio routing afterward.
5. Select and test the microphone in Steam
In the Steam client, open Friends & Chat, select the settings gear, then choose Voice. Choose the physical microphone rather than Default while diagnosing, and select Start Microphone Test. Speak and confirm that the meter responds and the playback includes your voice. Check Steam’s voice input level as well.
Steam’s menu labels can vary slightly with client version or language. Its microphone troubleshooting instructions identify the Voice settings and microphone test, and advise checking the game’s voice transmission mode and push-to-talk assignment if the Steam test succeeds.
A successful Steam test confirms Steam can use the microphone in that test; it does not confirm that the game has the right input or voice settings. If you changed devices while Steam or the game was open, restart Steam before retesting.

6. Check the game’s voice and control settings
Open the game’s audio, voice, or communication settings and verify:
- Voice chat is enabled and the correct input device is selected, if the game offers a device selector.
- Voice input volume or microphone sensitivity is high enough. If there is an activation threshold, lower it for a temporary test.
- The transmission mode is what you expect: open mic or push-to-talk.
- If push-to-talk is enabled, check the assigned key in the controls menu. Make sure you are pressing that key and it is not assigned to another action or intercepted by another overlay. There is no universal push-to-talk key.
- You are not muted, and the relevant party, team, proximity, lobby, or server channel is active. Check whether teammates are muted too.
As a short diagnostic, switch to open mic if the game allows it. If teammates can hear you then, the microphone path is working and the push-to-talk key or transmission setting is the more likely problem. Restore your preferred mode afterward.

Connect the microphone and set it as the Windows input before opening the game. Some games initialize their input device at launch and may not pick up a later device change. Use this order:
- Connect the microphone and confirm it is selected in Windows.
- Verify the Windows input test responds.
- Open Steam, select the microphone under Friends & Chat > gear > Voice, and run its test.
- Close and relaunch the game, then test in its voice channel.
If you plugged in, removed, or switched the microphone while the game was running, fully close and relaunch the game rather than assuming it will detect the change. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance also flags that the input device can change when a game starts.
If only one game still fails, check that game’s own support information or known issue reports. A game-specific voice bug or channel restriction is more plausible than a general microphone failure when Windows and Steam tests both work.

8. Check virtual devices and audio software
Headset mixers, voice changers, noise-suppression tools, streaming software, USB interfaces, and virtual microphones can add extra inputs to the device list. Examples include SteelSeries Sonar, Voicemod, NVIDIA Broadcast, and OBS virtual audio devices. They are not automatically a problem, but routing through them can make it unclear which input Steam or the game receives.
- For a test, select the physical microphone directly in Windows, Steam, and the game where possible.
- Temporarily close audio apps that may be routing or processing the microphone.
- Retest, then re-enable software or virtual devices one at a time to identify any conflict.
Bluetooth headsets may expose more than one profile or device. If the input remains unreliable, test temporarily with a wired or USB microphone to isolate the Bluetooth path. Treat settings such as audio enhancements or exclusive access as optional, reversible tests—not universal fixes.
9. Troubleshoot drivers only if Windows cannot use the microphone
Driver work makes sense if the microphone is missing from Windows, disappeared after an update, shows an error in Device Manager, or still fails the Windows test after you have checked connection, permissions, selection, and input volume. It is not the first fix to try when Windows and Steam already receive a clear signal.

Right-click Start > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. Identify the relevant audio device. If Windows does not detect it correctly, you can uninstall the device and restart the PC so Windows can attempt to reinstall it; if it does not return, use Device Manager’s scan for hardware changes. Then check for an appropriate driver from the headset, motherboard, laptop, or audio-interface manufacturer. Avoid random driver-updater utilities. 10. If input works but other players cannot hear you
If the Windows or Steam test records your voice, the microphone is capturing sound. If the game’s activity indicator also responds but nobody hears you, check the game’s transmission mode, push-to-talk key, local or server mute, and active voice channel. Confirm whether the problem affects one lobby or game, or all voice chat.
Only consider network or service issues once local input capture works. A VPN, firewall, network filter, game voice service, or server restriction can affect transmission, but changing network settings will not fix a silent Windows or Steam microphone test. Steam’s voice-chat troubleshooting page recommends checking selected devices and Windows defaults when Steam voice is the affected system.
When should you replace the microphone?
Do not buy a headset just because one Steam game cannot hear you. Replacement is reasonable when Windows cannot detect the microphone after trying another suitable port or connection, the microphone also fails on another device, or the cable, jack, boom, or hardware is visibly damaged. If Windows and Steam tests work, investigate the game’s routing and voice controls first. A USB headset or microphone can bypass a suspect analog connection, but it will not solve a wrong push-to-talk key, muted channel, or game-specific issue.
