If Steam says you have another pending transaction, don’t buy again yet. First check Account Details → View purchase history to see whether the order is pending, failed, completed, or canceled. A pending entry in your bank app may be a temporary authorization hold—not a settled charge—and retrying before the Steam order clears can create another hold.

What a pending Steam transaction means

A pending transaction means checkout has not reached a final state. Steam may still be waiting for a card issuer, PayPal, another payment provider, or its own checkout process. It is different from a completed purchase, and it does not by itself prove that Steam received the money.

  • Steam purchase pending: The order has not been finalized. The game, DLC, gift, or wallet funds may not be available yet.
  • Bank authorization pending: The bank or payment provider has temporarily reserved funds. That entry can remain even if Steam later marks the purchase failed.
  • Completed purchase: Steam purchase history shows completion and the item or wallet funds should be on the account. A receipt may also be available by email.
  • Failed or canceled purchase: Steam did not complete the order. A bank authorization can still take time to disappear; the bank or provider controls its release.
  • Wallet funds pending: A wallet top-up is still being processed, so the balance may not yet be usable.

Common messages include “Your transaction cannot be completed because you have another pending transaction on your account,” the same message referring to “one or more items in your cart,” and “Your purchase has not been completed.” A checkout screen that stays on “working,” “processing,” or “pending” can also indicate an unfinished order.

Steam says that in a documented card-decline case, it will not collect the funds and the bank returns them under its own policy. That guidance covers a failed transaction, not every pending payment: check with your bank if you need to know whether an entry is only an authorization or has settled. Steam’s guidance on pending bank transactions after a failed purchase explains the distinction.

Check the order before trying to fix it

  1. In Steam, select your account name in the upper-right corner and choose Account Details.
  2. Open View purchase history.
  3. Find the game, DLC, gift, wallet top-up, or other purchase and note its status: pending, completed, failed, or canceled.
  4. Check your Library or Wallet to see whether the content or funds arrived.
  5. Look for a receipt email and confirm that it names the same Steam account you are using. If you have more than one account, check the account that placed the order.

Steam identifies Account Details → View purchase history as the place to review Store purchases. See Steam’s purchase-history help for its guidance. If the item appears in a library or the wallet balance changed, confirm the order’s status in purchase history before making another purchase.

Cancel a pending purchase if Steam offers the option

If the order remains pending, the content has not arrived, and you need to clear the checkout, open the pending order in purchase history. Some transactions show a cancellation control; it is not available for every account or transaction type.

  1. Go to Account Details → View purchase history.
  2. Select the pending transaction.
  3. If shown, choose Cancel This Transaction.
  4. Confirm with Cancel My Purchase.
  5. Refresh purchase history and wait for the order to stop showing as pending before attempting checkout again.

This control path is also described in Technobezz’s cancellation instructions. If you do not see a cancellation option—or the order is a subscription, wallet issue, or unusual payment flow—use Steam’s pending-purchase support flow rather than trying commands or deleting Steam files. Canceling the Steam order does not make the bank release a hold immediately.

Decide whether to wait, cancel, or contact support

If you submitted the order moments ago and purchase history shows it pending, give the payment provider time to respond and refresh purchase history. Processing varies by payment method, bank, country, currency, and verification checks; Steam does not give one universal clearing time for every pending transaction.

  • Recent order, payment still processing: Wait briefly, check the receipt and purchase history again, and avoid another checkout attempt.
  • Still pending, no content, cancellation available: Cancel the order, then wait until its Steam status changes before retrying.
  • Still pending, no cancellation option: Use Steam’s pending-purchase wizard.
  • Wallet top-up completed but funds are missing: Verify the account and receipt. Steam advises contacting Support if the balance is still incorrect more than two hours after a completed purchase; see Steam Wallet troubleshooting.
  • Long-standing bank authorization after Steam says failed: Ask the bank or provider whether it is an authorization, reversal, or settled charge and what its release policy is.

If Steam still blocks checkout

Once you have checked the order status, use these low-risk tests to distinguish a stuck interface from a payment or account problem. They are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed ways to clear a transaction.

  1. Fully exit Steam, including from the system tray, reopen it, and check purchase history again.
  2. Try the official Steam website instead of the desktop client, or the client instead of the website.
  3. If using a browser, try another browser or a private window.
  4. Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy if you use one, and confirm the device has a stable connection.
  5. Review the payment method and billing details before trying again; do not repeatedly change the store country or currency.

If checkout works in one interface but not another, the issue may be with that client or browser session. If both fail, payment authorization or account-side processing is more likely. That is a troubleshooting inference, not a Steam-confirmed diagnosis. A browser or client switch cannot release a bank authorization.

Check payment details before retrying

Before submitting another order, check that the payment method can cover the purchase and that its billing information is correct. For a card, verify the number, expiration date, security code, billing name, street address, and ZIP or postal code against the card issuer’s records. Also check for a declined transaction, an issuer security block, or a missed verification prompt from PayPal or another provider.

Steam specifically identifies an address-verification mismatch as a cause of failure. The bank may show a pending entry even though Steam will not collect funds for that failed transaction. Steam cannot force acceptance when the check fails; the bank’s policy governs the return of the authorization. In the documented case, Steam may email a retry link that preserves the sale price for up to 72 hours after the failed purchase. That window is specific to the cited address/card guidance, not a general promise for all pending orders. Read Steam’s explanation of this failure case.

After the old order is no longer pending, retry only if the item did not arrive and you have corrected any payment or verification problem. You can use another legitimate payment method or existing Steam Wallet funds if available, but a new attempt may create another authorization. Do not buy a second copy just because your bank sent a notification.

Use the Steam status and bank status together

Steam purchase history Bank or provider status What to do
Pending Pending authorization Wait briefly and refresh purchase history. Cancel if the control is available and the item has not arrived; otherwise use Steam’s pending-purchase flow.
Failed Pending authorization Do not keep retrying. The bank controls when an authorization is released; ask the bank about its status and policy if it remains.
Completed No visible charge Check the account, receipt, Library, or Wallet. If the item or funds are missing, contact Steam Support.
Completed Completed or posted charge Keep the receipt and contact Steam if the purchase is missing. A posted charge is different from a temporary authorization.
No Steam record Completed or posted charge Contact Steam Support and the payment provider with the transaction details; do not make another purchase while the charge is unexplained.
Wallet top-up completed Charged, but balance unchanged Confirm the receipt names the account you are checking. If the balance remains wrong more than two hours after completion, contact Steam Support.

Wallet top-ups and currency mismatches

If a wallet top-up appears in purchase history but the balance has not changed, check the receipt email and make sure it identifies the account currently signed in. Steam says wallet funds normally appear automatically and advises contacting Support if the balance remains incorrect more than two hours after a completed purchase. The two-hour point applies to a completed top-up, not an order that is still pending. Steam’s wallet guidance covers these checks.

If funds are present but the wallet and purchase use different currencies, do not keep retrying. Review Steam’s currency-mismatch guidance before proceeding.

Contact Steam Support or your payment provider

Contact Steam when a transaction stays pending without a cancellation option, purchase history says completed but the content is missing, a provider says the payment was captured but Steam has no matching order, Steam asks you to pay again despite a valid receipt, or the same error occurs with multiple valid payment methods. Steam’s purchase-support wizard includes routes for Store checkout, wallet and gift-card problems, unauthorized charges, and guest purchases.

Contact the bank or payment provider when Steam marks the order failed but an authorization remains unusually long, the issuer declined or blocked the payment, billing verification appears incorrect, or the provider shows a completed payment Steam does not recognize. The provider can explain whether the entry is an authorization, reversal, completed charge, or dispute and state its release policy; it cannot make Steam deliver content for an order that failed.

If you do not recognize the purchase, treat it as unauthorized rather than troubleshooting a normal pending order. Use Steam’s unknown-charge form. Steam requests details such as payment type, exact date and amount, and the last four digits of the card, along with other identifying information requested in the form. Save the purchase-history entry, receipt email, payment date, amount, payment method, and the bank’s status before contacting either service.

If a game appeared and then disappeared

Steam says it may temporarily allow access to a game while a card payment is being authorized, then remove access if the payment is declined. If a game vanishes after checkout, check purchase history and the payment status rather than buying it again immediately. Steam explains provisional access during card authorization.

The same account and purchase-history checks apply on Windows, macOS, Steam Deck, and the Steam website. Button availability and checkout options can differ by client, account, region, currency, payment method, and transaction type.
