If your PS5 DualSense controller won’t connect or keeps disconnecting, turn off the console, reset the controller, then reconnect it with a compatible USB data cable and press the PS button. If it connects, install available PS5 system and controller software updates. If it still fails, use PlayStation Repairs for diagnosis.
Try these connection checks first
- Charge and pair the controller. Turn on the PS5, connect the controller to it with a USB cable, and press the PS button. Once the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable to try wireless use. A DualSense pairs with one PS5 at a time, so if it was last used with another console, pair it with the intended PS5 again. PlayStation’s pairing instructions explain the process.
- Check that the cable supports data. Not all USB cables work properly with the controller. If the console does not recognize it, try the supplied cable or another compatible USB data cable. A cable that charges the controller may not carry the data needed for pairing. The DualSense instruction manual notes the cable compatibility limitation.
Reset the DualSense controller
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller from USB.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller beside the Sony logo.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press the button inside the hole and hold it for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the supplied USB cable, then press the PS button.
PlayStation recommends this reset and reconnection procedure for controller connection problems. A reset is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee against a hardware or console fault. See PlayStation’s DualSense troubleshooting guide.
Update PS5 and controller software if it connects
If the controller works well enough to navigate the console, install any available PS5 system software update. DualSense controller software updates are included with PS5 system software updates. You can also check the controller update manually at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. PlayStation’s PS5 system software update instructions cover console updates.
If it still disconnects or won’t pair
If the controller pairs over USB but repeatedly disconnects when used wirelessly after a reset and updates, or it will not pair at all, use PlayStation Repairs for diagnostic guidance. The official instructions do not identify one universal cause for recurring disconnects, so repeated failures may need diagnosis rather than another settings change.

Do not start by resetting the PS5 or entering Safe Mode for an isolated controller connection problem. PlayStation documents Safe Mode separately, and a PS5 reset deletes user data; it is not the stated first-line fix for a DualSense connection issue.
