A Steam Deck crash can mean one game closing to the library, SteamOS freezing, or the entire device rebooting. Start by identifying which failure you have, then work through the least destructive fix: restart, update, verify the game, test Proton and storage, and only then use SteamOS recovery tools. A factory reset or re-image is not a first step.

Last checked: August 16, 2026. SteamOS menus, channels, and compatibility results can change.

What you see Start with
One game closes to the library Verify files, check compatibility, and test Proton
Several games crash Update SteamOS, remove plugins, test storage, and consider rollback
The whole Deck freezes or reboots Restart, remove accessories, return performance settings to default, and test Game Mode and Desktop Mode
Crashes occur only from microSD Run the same game from internal storage and inspect the card
Crashes occur only while docked Test handheld with the dock, display, and USB devices disconnected
The problem began after an update Record the SteamOS channel and consider a rollback

1. Restart the Deck completely

Use a normal restart first. If the interface is frozen, hold the power button for about 10 seconds, then start the Deck again. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and third-party accessories, and use the official charger or a known-good USB-C power source while testing.

A forced shutdown can lose unsaved progress, so treat it as recovery rather than a routine fix. Valve also recommends a 10-second power-off before entering the SteamOS recovery menu (Valve recovery instructions).

2. Install SteamOS and game updates

  1. Open Steam button → Settings → System.
  2. Install the latest available stable SteamOS update.
  3. Restart, then check the affected game’s Library page for an update.

Updates often fix crashes, but an immediate failure after an update may indicate a regression. Note the date and whether you use the stable, beta, or preview channel. Valve publishes changing fixes in its Steam Deck update notes; do not assume a beta fix is present in stable SteamOS.

3. Verify the game’s installed files

  1. Open Library and select the game.
  2. Choose the gear icon → Properties → Installed Files.
  3. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Steam reacquires missing or damaged files. This is useful after an interrupted update, power loss, or moving a game between internal storage and microSD. Verification does not repair a corrupted save, incompatible mod, broken launcher, or damaged Proton prefix. If only one save crashes, test an older save and check where the game stores local data before changing cloud-sync settings.

4. Check the Steam Deck compatibility rating

Open the game’s store page and read its Steam Deck Compatibility result:

  • Verified: Valve’s tested configuration should work well, but later game updates, mods, saves, or hardware problems can still cause crashes.
  • Playable: Manual settings or limitations involving controls, text, launchers, or performance may apply.
  • Unsupported: Proton, anti-cheat, launcher, or other compatibility blockers may prevent reliable play.
  • Unreviewed: Valve has not established a dependable result.

Steam Deck runs Linux-based SteamOS and uses Proton for Windows games. Valve explains the ratings and known Proton limitations in its Steam Deck compatibility documentation.

5. Try a different Proton version

  1. In Library, select the game and open gear icon → Properties.
  2. Choose Compatibility.
  3. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  4. Test one version at a time: the default selection, Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix when offered, then an older stable Proton release.

There is no universally best Proton version. A change that stops crashes can create graphical, controller, launcher, multiplayer, or performance problems. Record which version produced which result. The control is documented by Steam Support.

6. Return the Deck to a stock configuration

Temporarily disable Decky Loader plugins, game mods, custom launch options, Proton-GE configurations, overlays, recording tools, and CPU, GPU, frame-rate, or TDP tweaks. Retest with default settings. This isolates third-party software without claiming that any particular plugin is always at fault. Software installed outside Flatpak can also be affected by SteamOS updates, as Valve notes in its Steam Deck FAQ.

7. Reset graphics, performance, and recording settings

For demanding games, restore the in-game preset to conservative defaults. Disable ray tracing, frame generation, experimental scaling, overlays, and Game Recording; remove custom GPU-clock or TDP limits; and try a fixed frame-rate cap. This is especially informative when crashes follow several minutes of heavy play and coincide with high fan noise or heat. Heat correlation is evidence to investigate, not proof of a specific temperature fault. Valve’s update history includes fixes involving recording and Proton window behavior, so built-in features can be relevant variables.

8. Test without the microSD card

  1. Shut the Deck down completely.
  2. Remove the microSD card.
  3. Install or move a small test game to internal storage.
  4. Run it repeatedly under the same conditions.

If the internal-storage copy works, suspect a failing, counterfeit, corrupted, poorly seated, or degraded card. Steam Deck formats cards as ext4 with casefolding (Valve FAQ). Back up data before reformatting, which erases the card, and never remove it while it is being accessed. iFixit’s troubleshooting guide lists storage and microSD faults among possible crash causes (iFixit).

9. Check free space and move the game

In the Deck’s storage settings, check both the internal drive and microSD. A drive that is nearly full can leave too little room for updates, shader data, compatibility prefixes, and temporary files. Uninstall unused games or move the affected title to the other storage location, then retest. If only one storage device produces crashes, that comparison is more useful than applying an arbitrary free-space number.

10. Rebuild the game’s Proton files

A damaged Proton prefix can crash even when the game’s main files verify correctly. In the game’s Properties → Installed Files, use Delete Proton Files if the option is available, then relaunch so Steam recreates the environment.

This can remove game-specific settings and local data stored in the prefix. Confirm the save location and synchronize or back up important saves first. Do not delete unidentified compatibility or shader folders as a general “cache fix.”

11. Disconnect the dock and accessories

Test handheld with no dock, external display, USB hub, external storage, or Bluetooth controller or headset if practical. If crashes occur only when docked, investigate dock firmware, display resolution and refresh rate, HDMI or DisplayPort cables, USB power delivery, and the particular game’s external-display behavior. Valve describes docking as similar to connecting a USB-C hub; it does not inherently increase performance (Valve FAQ).

12. Roll back SteamOS after an update-related regression

Use rollback when several games or the system became unstable immediately after an operating-system update.

  1. Power the Deck off fully.
  2. Hold the … button and press the power button.
  3. Keep holding … until the SteamOS boot menu appears.
  4. Select the previous SteamOS entry.

Valve’s recovery environment provides a Previous SteamOS option intended to return to a last-known-good system while retaining user data such as installed games and saves. Menu wording and available entries vary by release; record the versions you test. Rollback cannot fix a bad game update or failing hardware and the Deck may later offer the update again. See Valve’s recovery guide.

13. Repair SteamOS, reset the Deck, or seek hardware support

Repair SteamOS

Use the recovery environment’s repair option when multiple games crash, Game Mode and Desktop Mode are unstable, or system files may be corrupted. Repair attempts to preserve games and personal content, but do not treat preservation as a guarantee.

Factory reset

If the Deck still boots, use Steam button → Settings → System → Factory Reset. This clears local data and reinstalls SteamOS. Confirm cloud saves and back up files first; local games and data can be removed.

A full re-image is the most destructive recovery. Valve states that it wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems before installing stock SteamOS. Follow the current instructions in the SteamOS recovery documentation.

Contact Steam Support

Escalate when crashes continue across multiple games after clean software recovery, occur in both Game Mode and Desktop Mode, happen under light load, or accompany boot failures, storage errors, display artifacts, or abnormal charging. Persistent faults with the internal SSD or system board may require repair; iFixit’s guide lists these hardware possibilities (iFixit). If an SSD was replaced, mention it: ValveSoftware/SteamOS issue #2547 is an example of a reported third-party NVMe boot problem, not proof that all replacement drives are incompatible.

Choose the path that matches your symptom

Only one game crashes

  1. Verify files.
  2. Check the compatibility rating.
  3. Test Proton versions.
  4. Remove mods and launch options.
  5. Rebuild Proton files after protecting saves.
  6. Move the game between internal storage and microSD.

Several games crash

  1. Update SteamOS.
  2. Disable plugins and performance tweaks.
  3. Disconnect accessories.
  4. Test internal storage.
  5. Roll back if the timing matches an OS update.
  6. Repair SteamOS, then seek support if instability remains.

The entire Deck freezes or reboots

  1. Perform a full restart.
  2. Remove the microSD card and accessories.
  3. Return power and graphics settings to default.
  4. Compare Game Mode with Desktop Mode.
  5. Use rollback or repair, then contact Valve after a clean recovery.

Crashes follow sleep or resume

Restart instead of repeatedly resuming the failed session, install the latest stable SteamOS, disable plugins, overlays, recording, and external displays, and test undocked. If the behavior began after a particular OS update, rollback is a supported diagnostic step; a factory reset is not a guaranteed cure.

What to record before contacting Steam Support

  • LCD or OLED model.
  • SteamOS version and update channel.
  • Game title and game version.
  • Internal or microSD installation.
  • Proton version.
  • Whether the Deck freezes, returns to the library, reboots, or powers off.
  • Plugins, mods, launch options, dock use, and any SSD replacement.
  • Every troubleshooting step and its result.
