If a wired controller isn’t working on Nintendo Switch 2, first identify the controller model: the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller needs Pro Controller Wired Communication enabled, while the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller switches to wired communication automatically over USB-C. Then check that the game supports the controller and use the console’s button test to distinguish an input problem from a cable, USB port, or dock issue.
Identify your controller before changing settings
Nintendo’s wired-controller instructions differ by model. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller do not use the same setup, so enabling the original controller’s setting is not a universal fix.
- Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: connecting its USB charging cable may not be enough to send input. Enable System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Wired Communication. While it communicates this way, the controller’s NFC touchpoint is disabled, as Nintendo notes in its Pro Controller support guidance.
- Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: it automatically uses wired communication when connected by USB-C. Nintendo describes connecting it to the dock with its supplied cable, or directly to the console with a USB-C cable. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessories information.
- Other original Switch controllers: some work with Switch 2, but support depends on the software. Nintendo’s Switch 2 support information describes wired registration in TV mode through the dock; the original Pro Controller also needs its wired communication setting enabled.
Work through the wired-controller checks
- Check that the game supports the controller. Look at the software’s packaging or manual, and try another title known to support that controller. Nintendo warns that controller use on Switch 2 is limited to supported software; a game that does not support a particular controller can make it appear unrecognized even when the hardware works. Consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance.
- Use the connection route for that model. In TV mode, connect a compatible legacy Switch controller to the dock with its USB charging cable. For the Switch 2 Pro Controller, use its supplied USB-C cable at the dock or connect it directly to the console with a USB-C cable. Push both ends fully into place and check for visible damage to the cable or plugs. Nintendo documents these routes in its Switch 2 support information and Switch 2 accessories information.
- Enable wired communication for the original Pro Controller only. On the console, open System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Wired Communication and turn the setting on. The Switch 2 Pro Controller uses wired communication automatically when connected over USB-C. Nintendo explains the distinction in its Pro Controller support guidance.
- Test whether button presses reach the console. Open System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test Input Devices → Test Controller Buttons, then press buttons on the wired controller. Nintendo says the pressed button should appear on screen. Follow its controller button-testing instructions.
- Compare results in another compatible game. If buttons appear in the console test but do not respond in one game, check that game’s controller support and settings. If the controller fails in more than one compatible title, continue isolating the controller and USB connection.
- Try another cable or supported USB route if available. A known-good compatible cable or a different dock/console connection can help show whether the problem follows the controller or stays with one part of the USB path. Replace a cable only if it is damaged or fails this check; a different route is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of which component is faulty.
Use the results to narrow down the fault
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The controller charges, but buttons do not respond. | Charging alone does not establish that the controller is communicating as an input device. | Confirm the model, use its correct wired setup, and run the console button test. |
| Buttons appear in the console test, but one game ignores them. | The controller can send input to the console; the issue may be that game’s controller support or settings. | Check the game’s manual or packaging and test another compatible title. |
| No buttons appear during testing, including across compatible software. | Nintendo says this result suggests a controller fault. | Seek service or repair for an official Nintendo controller. For third-party models, consult their manufacturer’s compatibility and support guidance. |
| The controller works through another supported route, but not through one dock or USB port. | The failure may be specific to that cable, port, dock, or console connection path. | Keep comparing routes and seek separate diagnosis for the dock or console path if the problem stays with it. |
These comparisons help narrow the possibilities; they do not identify a specific defective part on their own.
When a USB hub helps—and when it does not
If the dock’s USB ports are occupied, Nintendo says you may use a self-powered USB hub rated for at least 500 mA per port. Nintendo does not guarantee that every hub will work. This is a way to add port capacity, not a repair for a bad cable, controller, or USB connection. See Nintendo Support Japan’s USB hub guidance.

When to seek repair or manufacturer support
If an official Nintendo controller does not display button presses in the console test, Nintendo says controller failure is suspected and repair may be appropriate; its button-testing guidance explains the test result. If it passes the test but fails only in one game, check that game’s controller support instead. If it works through another supported connection but not one specific port or dock route, the console or dock path needs separate diagnosis. For a third-party wired controller, consult its maker for model-specific compatibility, firmware, and repair instructions.
