First check whether the silence is only on your device or is also present in the YouTube replay. If the replay is silent on multiple devices, trace the audio through your capture setup: play game audio and watch the relevant OBS mixer meter. No meter movement points to a capture or routing problem; meter movement means check mute, level and output-track settings. Test a local recording before streaming again. A silent archive is not guaranteed to be recoverable.
Is the replay actually silent?
- In the YouTube player, check that its speaker control is not muted and raise the player volume.
- Check your device volume, selected audio output and browser or app. Try another device, or ask another viewer to listen to the replay.
- If the replay has sound elsewhere, the issue is local playback rather than the stream recording. If it is silent on multiple devices, investigate the audio capture and output path.
The reviewed YouTube archive guidance does not describe a special control for restoring audio to a silent replay.
Use OBS’s mixer meter to locate the break
Play the game or other audio that should be heard in the stream, then watch the corresponding source in the OBS Audio Mixer. OBS meters indicate source volume; the mixer also provides mute, fader and monitoring controls. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- No meter movement: OBS is not receiving audio from that source. Check the selected capture source, the game’s or system’s audio routing, and any console or capture-card output settings.
- The meter moves: Check that the source is not muted and that its fader is raised. Confirm that the source is assigned to the output track used by your stream or recording; the correct track depends on your OBS output configuration.
- Only some audio is missing: If the microphone works but the game does not, focus on game capture, application routing, console output or the capture card. If all sources are silent, start with the selected output and OBS audio configuration.

Windows: choose an OBS capture method
OBS’s Application Audio Capture guide lists per-application capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. It says OBS Studio 30.1 added audio capture to Game Capture and Window Capture sources. Depending on the installed version, open the source properties and enable “Capture Audio (BETA),” or add an Application Audio Capture source and select the game or app window. The “BETA” label applies where it appears in your installed OBS version; labels and support can change. Consult the OBS Application Audio Capture Guide.

When using Application Audio Capture sources, OBS cautions that Desktop Audio should be disabled to avoid duplicate capture and echo. If an application is incompatible with that source, OBS describes routing its audio through a virtual audio cable and adding that cable as an Audio Input Capture source. This is an advanced workaround, not a reason to buy new hardware.
macOS: check both OBS and macOS versions
OBS’s macOS capture guide describes different methods by version: with OBS Studio 30 and macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, use a macOS Audio Capture source for desktop or selected application audio; the macOS Screen Capture Source also captures audio. OBS 28 and 29 on macOS 13 or later use the Screen Capture Source. For older macOS versions, the guide says additional software is required for desktop-audio capture. Because the guide dates from 2022, check its current macOS Desktop Audio Capture instructions against the versions installed on your Mac.

Fix console or capture-card game audio
If OBS receives video but no game sound from a console, check the console’s audio format and how sound is routed to the capture device. Settings vary by console generation and capture-card model, so use the manufacturer’s guidance for your equipment.
Check the console’s audio format
Elgato says its capture devices accept stereo (2.0) PCM, not bitstream, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, Dolby Atmos or the other listed formats. Its guide recommends Linear PCM for the documented PlayStation configurations and stereo or uncompressed output for the documented Xbox configuration. For Switch, it says Surround can prevent some sounds from being captured correctly and recommends Stereo if Automatic fails. Check headphone and device routing
Elgato documents cases where a headset plugged into a PlayStation controller or the Switch headphone port prevents game audio from being sent over HDMI. If that describes your setup, test the console’s HDMI audio path without that connection and follow the device-specific instructions.
OBS setup also differs by operating system: Elgato says Windows may capture its device automatically when it is added, while on macOS you may need to add an Audio Input Capture source and select the capture device.

Test before the next live stream
- In OBS, record a short sample with the same game, microphone, capture sources and output settings you plan to use live.
- Play the resulting file in a media player and confirm that the game and any other required sources are audible.
- Before going live, test representative audio and movement. YouTube Help says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- During the stream, monitor stream health and any messages in YouTube’s live control room. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Can you restore audio to an existing silent replay?
Do not assume that you can. The YouTube guidance reviewed explains archiving and recommends keeping a local backup; it does not establish that missing audio can reliably be restored after a stream. For future streams, retain a local recording and check it before ending your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all; this is an archive-duration warning, not an audio-failure statistic.
