If YouTube rejects your stream key in OBS, copy the key for the intended stream from YouTube Studio and replace the one in OBS. Make sure the YouTube server URL and key are paired correctly. If a fresh key still fails, check channel eligibility, OBS and network health, and the exact error shown in Live Control Room. For a 24/7 broadcast, also plan a local recording: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Refresh the YouTube stream key in OBS
A stream key is the credential OBS uses to send a feed to the right YouTube stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Open the stream settings: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open the Stream tab.
- Copy the intended stream’s key: Confirm that the stream shown is the one you want OBS to broadcast to. Scheduled streams or streams with custom or reused settings may have their own configuration.
- Replace the key in OBS: Paste the copied key into OBS’s stream-key field, replacing the old value, then save or apply the settings.
- If necessary, reset the key in YouTube Studio: Use Reset beside the hidden key, then copy the newly generated key and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Test the connection: Start streaming in OBS and wait for the feed preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube’s standard encoder workflow, click Go live after the preview appears unless the broadcast is configured to start automatically.

Check the server URL and key pairing
OBS has separate fields for the server and the stream key. Put the YouTube stream URL in the server field and the matching key in the key field; do not paste the key into the server field or assume that a key copied for one stream belongs to another.

- Return to the intended stream’s settings in YouTube Studio and check which stream URL and key it provides.
- In OBS, verify both values rather than changing the key alone.
- If you use a scheduled stream or saved settings, confirm OBS is pointed at that specific stream and its current credentials.
If a new key is still rejected
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. If the channel is restricted or not eligible, changing the key in OBS will not restore access. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio and consult YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Separate a credential problem from an encoder or network problem
If the key and server URL match but the feed does not reach YouTube, update OBS and inspect the stream status and encoder errors in OBS and Live Control Room. Check CPU load and test the outbound internet connection. YouTube advises contacting your internet provider if the outbound connection is the problem; if encoder-side issues remain, it suggests trying a different encoder. These checks address possible encoder or connection failures, not a stale-key diagnosis. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Treat a format error as a separate issue
If YouTube specifically reports “Incorrect stream format,” its guidance is to send H.264 video and AAC audio. That is a format-error remedy; it does not establish that codec changes will fix a rejected or stale key. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
Plan for a continuous stream’s archive
A 24/7 broadcast raises a separate issue from key rejection: the YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour figure is an archive caveat, not a guaranteed maximum live duration, and YouTube does not promise that one continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete archive. Keep a local recording as a backup and verify that the recording file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips provide additional guidance. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe a specific restart cadence for a 24/7 stream.
