How to Fix a YouTube Prerecorded Live Stream That Resumes With the Wrong Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First work out where the wrong video appears: in the stream sent by the encoder, or only in a viewer’s playback after pausing and resuming. Those are different problems. Check the outgoing source and playlist if the feed itself is wrong; check the event page and YouTube’s DVR playback if only a viewer sees the wrong video or position.

Identify where the wrong video first appears

Separate the creator’s stream output from the viewer’s playback. YouTube’s DVR controls where a viewer can move within a live stream; the encoder controls which prerecorded file or playlist is being sent. A stream key identifies the YouTube destination, not the clip selected in the encoder. This distinction follows from YouTube’s description of stream keys and OBS’s separate source controls (YouTube Help: stream keys; OBS: Media Sources).

  • The Live Control Room preview or multiple viewers show the wrong content: investigate the encoder’s active scene, source, file, or playlist.
  • The outgoing feed is correct, but one viewer returns to an unexpected place after pausing: investigate the event page, player, device, and DVR behavior.
  • The change happens after an encoder restart, scene change, playlist transition, or interruption: note that trigger; it helps narrow down which source or playback setting to inspect.

Check the selected YouTube event and stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and confirm that you are looking at the intended live event.
  2. Check that the encoder is connected to the stream key for that event. YouTube’s stream key routes the encoder’s feed to its destination; changing or resetting it does not select a different video file.
  3. Review the event’s live settings, including DVR and automatic start/stop, if relevant. These settings concern the live event and playback behavior, not the encoder’s media-source selection (YouTube Help: stream keys and live settings).

Inspect the prerecorded source in OBS

If OBS is sending the stream, check the scene that is actually live before changing settings. A correct file in an inactive scene will not fix a different source being sent from the active one.

For an OBS Media Source

  1. Open the active scene and select its Media Source.
  2. Confirm the file path and filename in the source properties. If the wrong file is assigned, select the intended file.
  3. Check Restart playback when source becomes active. When enabled, making that source active can start it again from the beginning. Leave it enabled only if that is what the show requires.
  4. Check Loop and set it according to whether this file should repeat. If another file appears rather than the same file restarting, inspect the active scene and source assignment first.

These are OBS Media Source controls; their effect depends on how the scene is used in your broadcast (OBS: Media Sources).

For an OBS VLC Video playlist

  1. Open the active scene’s VLC Video source and verify the listed files and their order.
  2. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if the files must play in a fixed sequence.
  3. Check Loop Playlist and the source’s visibility behavior to make sure they match the intended broadcast.
  4. Confirm that VLC is installed: OBS says its VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed.

OBS documents these playlist and visibility controls in its Media Sources guide.

Preview the feed and compare it with an archive

  1. Before the next public broadcast, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the actual video and audio.
  2. After a test, inspect the local archive, if available, and compare it with what viewers report.
  3. If the archive contains the wrong video, the encoder had already sent the wrong content. If the archive is correct but a viewer saw another video or resumed at an unexpected point, investigate the viewer’s event page and playback instead.

The archive comparison is a diagnostic inference: YouTube recommends checking the preview and local archive files as part of stream setup and troubleshooting (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues; YouTube Help: live streaming tips).

Troubleshoot viewer playback and DVR

First confirm the viewer opened the intended live event, rather than another event or a regular uploaded video. Refresh the page or feed if its playback appears stale, then compare the same event in another supported app or device.

YouTube says viewers resume a live stream from where they paused when DVR is available. However, rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and YouTube notes lower limits on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. Check the event’s start time and DVR behavior before treating a resume position as evidence that the encoder changed videos (YouTube Help: live stream DVR).

For a regular uploaded video, watch progress behaves differently from live DVR. YouTube says partially watched videos usually resume where the viewer left off, but nearly completed videos may not. Clearing watch history clears progress bars (YouTube Help: manage watch history).

If the problem follows a reconnect or affects the outgoing feed

When the encoder reconnects or sends unexpected content, check its status and logs alongside the selected source. YouTube recommends using a current encoder version, checking the feed in the encoder, reviewing CPU load and local archives, and checking outbound connectivity when the encoder output looks healthy. These are general stream-troubleshooting checks, not a confirmed explanation for every wrong-video symptom (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues; YouTube Help: live streaming tips).

If the encoder connects to YouTube without a stream key, YouTube advises contacting the encoder software’s support team. For non-OBS encoders, consult that software’s documentation and apply the same diagnostic separation: confirm the selected media, confirm the outgoing feed, then check YouTube playback.
