If Active Matter lags in multiplayer on Xbox Series X|S, first check for an Xbox or game-service outage, then test your console’s connection and NAT, restart the game and router, install updates, and try Ethernet. These checks help distinguish local network trouble from a service-side or game-specific problem; the Active Matter FAQ does not document a guaranteed Xbox lag fix.
Check whether the problem is with Xbox, Active Matter, or your connection
Active Matter’s official FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S availability and cross-platform multiplayer. A service outage can look much like a local connection problem, so check Xbox service status and Active Matter’s official support channels for outage or maintenance notices before changing router settings. Microsoft’s Xbox connectivity policy also distinguishes Xbox network failures from problems with partner services.
If Xbox reports an error code, search for it through Xbox Support. If other online games work but Active Matter does not, that is useful information to include when contacting the game’s support team, but it does not by itself prove the cause.
Run the Xbox network tests and check NAT
On your Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings. Run the available network speed and statistics test and the multiplayer connection test, then note the NAT type and any error messages. Menu wording can vary with system updates.

A strict or unknown NAT type can limit connections with other players. Xbox multiplayer guidance explains that Open NAT has fewer compatibility restrictions. If the console reports a NAT problem, restart the router first; avoid changing firewall or port settings until simpler checks are complete.
Restart Active Matter and power-cycle the router
- Quit Active Matter completely, then launch it again and test multiplayer.
- If the problem remains, restart your router using its normal power or restart procedure. Allow it to reconnect fully before testing the game again.
- Restart the Xbox if the connection still behaves unusually, then rerun the multiplayer connection test.
Restarting the game and resetting the router are standard Xbox connection troubleshooting steps. They are reversible and do not establish that Active Matter itself is at fault.

Install pending game and Xbox updates
Check for updates for Active Matter and the Xbox system software, install anything pending, and retry multiplayer. Keeping both the game client and console current is a basic network troubleshooting step; an update is not evidence that a specific lag patch exists.
Test with a wired Ethernet connection
If you play over Wi-Fi, connect the Xbox directly to the router with a wired Ethernet cable, such as a Cat6 Ethernet cable, and test again. Ethernet is a useful comparison because it removes Wi-Fi signal strength and interference from the connection path. If the lag improves, investigate Wi-Fi placement or interference; if it does not, the cause may lie elsewhere.

Change router settings only if basic checks fail
Router firewall or port restrictions can contribute to multiplayer connection conflicts, particularly when NAT is restricted. Use Xbox’s official network guidance for the current port list and router-specific instructions rather than copying settings from an unrelated guide. Change one setting at a time and record the original value so you can undo it.
Changing DNS is another possible test, but it is not guaranteed to reduce latency or fix lag. Do not treat a DNS change as a proven Active Matter solution.

When to contact Active Matter support
If multiplayer lag persists after these checks, especially across different networks, contact Active Matter support and describe the Xbox model, when the issue occurs, your NAT result, whether Ethernet changes it, and any error code. The game’s FAQ says, “If you encounter any problems, please contact our support service.” It does not publish a specific Xbox Series X|S lag patch or guaranteed workaround, so available first-party information does not establish a game-specific defect or a definitive fix.
