Then determine whether the response came from the origin or CloudFront could not reach it. Check the matching cache behavior, origin path and access rules before changing settings; a 404, 403, 502 and 504 point to different failure layers.
1. Capture the failure before changing the distribution
Test the stream’s parent manifest and a failing media segment separately. Record the exact URL, HTTP status, any CloudFront error code or response headers, timestamp, and affected viewer region if known. A single viewer’s report does not establish that every viewer is affected.

2. Identify whether the origin responded or CloudFront could not reach it
A 4xx may reflect the request, path, authorization or an error returned by the origin. A 5xx may also come from the origin, or indicate that CloudFront could not obtain a response. Check origin logs and response headers where available, and compare them with the CloudFront-facing status. For HTTP 504: check reachability first
- Confirm the custom origin is publicly reachable from the network path CloudFront uses.
- Check firewall and security-group rules for blocked traffic.
- If network access is permitted, investigate slow application responses and the origin timeout configuration.
- Check whether the origin itself returned 504; not every 504 is generated by CloudFront.
AWS’s HTTP 504 guidance recommends checking origin reachability and access rules before focusing on response delays or timeout settings.
For HTTP 502: verify DNS and TLS
Check that the origin hostname resolves as intended and that CloudFront can establish a TLS connection to it. Use the exact CloudFront error code, origin hostname and certificate details to narrow the failure; a generic 502 alone does not identify which part of the connection failed. 3. Verify that manifests and segments route to the right origin
Compare the failing URL with the distribution’s origin domain, origin path and cache behavior path pattern. Confirm that the manifest and segment requests reach the intended streaming endpoint. A parent manifest and its media segments may need distinct endpoint-specific behaviors; a request routed to the wrong endpoint can return 404.
- Identify the actual streaming format and endpoint: for example, HLS, DASH, CMAF or Smooth Streaming.
- Inspect the cache behavior that matches the failing manifest URL, then repeat for the failing segment URL.
- Confirm each behavior points to the correct origin and uses the intended origin path.
- Check how unmatched paths are routed. For a MediaPackage workflow, AWS’s example uses endpoint-specific origin configuration and cache behaviors, including a wildcard behavior for unmatched requests.
Do not copy a path pattern from an example without confirming that it matches your format and endpoint. AWS describes the MediaPackage routing example and its failure modes in Deliver video streaming with CloudFront and AWS Media Services. CloudFront delivers video from HTTP origins, while the video itself is packaged as manifests and segments; AWS lists HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming and CMAF among common formats. 4. Check object existence and origin access
If the origin is Amazon S3
- Verify the exact object key, including capitalization. S3 keys are case-sensitive, and a missing object or capitalization mismatch can appear as Access Denied.
- Check the bucket permissions and the credentials or origin-access configuration CloudFront uses.
- Confirm that the requested object is actually present at the key implied by the distribution’s origin path.
An S3-origin 403 can result from a missing object, a case mismatch, missing permissions or invalid or insufficient credentials. AWS lists these causes in its distribution troubleshooting guide.
If the origin is not S3
Do not apply S3 bucket steps to MediaPackage or another HTTP origin. Check that origin’s authorization settings and access logs for the exact request, and verify that it is serving the requested manifest or segment path.

5. Allow for cached errors after correcting the cause
CloudFront can cache selected error responses. How long an error remains visible depends on the status code, edge-cache state, custom error configuration, error caching minimum TTL and, in some cases, Cache-Control headers. AWS’s general status-processing guidance gives a 10-second default minimum TTL, but that is not a universal wait time: the distribution’s current settings and response headers can change what you observe.
After fixing the underlying problem, check the active error caching configuration and response headers before treating a still-visible error as proof that the fix failed. See CloudFront’s status-code processing guidance.

6. Use the evidence to choose the next check
