Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by recording the exact UTC time of a disconnect, then compare YouTube Live Control Room health, the encoder’s status and logs, and EC2 network metrics for that same moment. A disconnect is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the encoder or source may be failing, YouTube may reject the ingest, the instance may hit a network limit, or the VPC egress path may be interrupted. Work through those possibilities in order, changing one variable at a time.
First identify who is actually affected
Check YouTube Live Control Room, the encoder’s own status, and reports from viewers. The pattern helps separate a stream-side failure from playback trouble:
- If one viewer reports a problem, check that viewer’s device and connection first.
- If several viewers on the same network report trouble, investigate their shared connection or playback environment.
- If viewers on different networks report the same interruption, or YouTube’s health panel shows a problem, focus on the encoder, ingest, or stream path.
YouTube recommends distinguishing viewer-side problems from stream-wide issues. Do not change EC2 rules just because one viewer cannot watch.
Check the encoder and its source before changing AWS networking
Inspect the encoder’s error log and CPU load, and play back a local recording made during a representative test. Update the encoder if it is out of date, but save the current logs and note the disconnect time before changing its configuration.

What the local recording can tell you
- If the archive has gaps, poor audio or video, or visible encoding artifacts, investigate the source capture, encoder load, storage and I/O, and encoder application. A local fault can appear as a YouTube interruption.
- If the preview and archive are healthy while YouTube reports a broken stream, prioritize outbound connectivity and ingest.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says, “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” Treat that as a diagnostic lead, not proof of a particular AWS fault.
Compare the full stream bitrate with available outbound capacity
Measure outbound throughput from the EC2 host while it is doing representative work; download speed does not establish upload capacity. Compare the available outbound capacity with the total bitrate sent through the constrained path, including audio, other outputs, and any backup encoder using the same route.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate. If measured capacity is close to the combined target or fluctuates, lower the output bitrate, frame rate, or resolution for a controlled test. A backup stream that shares the same constrained network path does not remove that bottleneck.

Verify encoder settings and stream-key symptoms
YouTube’s current guidance allows RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 codec options. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it. The following H.264 rates are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a specific EC2 route can sustain them:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
Use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the exact combination you use.
Reset or replace the stream key only when the symptoms point to an invalid key, authentication, or setup problem—especially a startup error. A key reset is not a general fix for a stream that starts successfully and then loses its connection. If you do replace it, update the encoder’s configured key and protect the new key as a credential.

Check the EC2 instance’s network limits at the failure time
Identify the exact instance type and check its documented network performance. An advertised “up to” rate is not necessarily a continuous baseline: some instance types use network I/O credits to burst above baseline, and burst capacity is best effort. AWS says credits accrue when usage is below baseline, are separate for inbound and outbound traffic, and burst returns to baseline when credits are exhausted. Internet-bound capacity can also differ from instance-to-instance bandwidth.
Review ENA performance metrics
Compare metrics around each recorded disconnect timestamp. Relevant ENA counters include:
bw_out_allowance_exceeded: outbound bandwidth allowance exceeded.pps_allowance_exceeded: packet-per-second allowance exceeded.conntrack_allowance_exceeded: connection-tracking allowance exceeded.
Increases can indicate that the instance exceeded an AWS network allowance, with packets queued or dropped. Configure metric collection if the metrics are not available for your instance or monitoring setup. A missing or smooth-looking CloudWatch graph does not rule out brief microbursts: short spikes can fall between coarser sampling points.

AWS describes the consequence this way: “When the network traffic for an instance exceeds a maximum, AWS shapes the traffic that exceeds the maximum by queueing and then dropping network packets.” If an allowance counter rises at the same time as the stream drops, test a lower bitrate or a suitable instance with more network capacity before making unrelated changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Trace the VPC egress path and traffic controls
Follow the actual internet-bound route from the instance’s subnet. Depending on the design, traffic may pass through an internet gateway or a NAT path, as well as a firewall or proxy. Review the full path rather than assuming the instance connects directly to the internet.
- Check the subnet route table for the route used by internet-bound traffic and verify that its target and any NAT or firewall path are healthy.
- Review security-group outbound rules. Security groups are stateful, so return traffic for an allowed connection is handled statefully.
- Review the subnet network ACL’s egress and return-traffic rules. Network ACLs are stateless, so both directions must be permitted.
- Check the EC2 host firewall and any NAT, firewall, or proxy between the instance and YouTube for denied or reset connections.
Keep rules least-privilege. Do not blindly open inbound ports as a proposed fix for an outbound streaming failure; first identify which hop is dropping or rejecting traffic.

Only investigate MTU when the symptoms point there
If the instance or network path uses an unusual MTU or jumbo frames, check path MTU as a lower-priority branch, particularly if logs suggest stalled or fragmented connections. AWS states that an internet gateway forwards packets up to 1500 bytes and recommends an MTU of 1500 for internet traffic.
Run a controlled test that can confirm or rule out a cause
- Choose a representative audio-and-video test and begin at a lower, known bitrate that fits within measured outbound capacity.
- Record the start time and every interruption in UTC. Save encoder logs, YouTube stream-health messages, CPU load, measured outbound throughput, and relevant ENA counters.
- Compare all evidence at the same timestamps. An encoder error, a YouTube ingest warning, or an AWS allowance counter points to different parts of the path.
- Change one factor—such as bitrate, frame rate, route, or instance type—then repeat the test. This makes the result interpretable.
- Test any backup encoder and path before relying on failover. If both use the same constrained uplink, they may fail together.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video before an event, monitoring stream health, and testing failover. Keep the evidence even when a test appears successful so that intermittent failures can be compared rather than guessed at.
Common symptoms and next steps
| Evidence at the disconnect | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Local archive is poor or has gaps; encoder load is high | Investigate source capture, encoding load, storage/I/O, and encoder configuration. |
| Local archive is healthy; YouTube reports stream trouble | Check outbound capacity, ENA allowance counters, and the VPC egress path. |
| Outbound allowance counter rises with the disconnect | Test a lower total bitrate or assess an instance with appropriate network capacity. |
| Stream fails at startup with a key or authentication error | Verify the configured key and encoder setup; replace the key only if the evidence indicates a key problem. |
| Only one viewer, or viewers on one shared network, report failure | Investigate viewer-side device, network, or playback conditions before altering the stream. |
| MTU-related stalls or fragmentation are indicated | Check path MTU; AWS recommends 1500 MTU for internet traffic through an internet gateway. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock rather than troubleshoot an EC2-hosted encoder, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
