If your Asus ROG Ally controller is not working, check Control Mode in Command Center first and determine whether the failure affects every app or only one game. A wrong mode, Armoury Crate profile, or external-controller conflict can make healthy controls appear dead. Work through the software and Windows checks before considering a joystick replacement.

If your Asus ROG Ally controller is not working, first check Control Mode in Command Center and determine whether the problem affects the entire device or only one game. In most cases, a controller that appears dead is being assigned the wrong input mode, overridden by a game profile, or hidden by a Windows or external-controller conflict.

Use this order: test the scope of the problem, select Gamepad Mode, disable Embedded Controller when using another controller, check the Armoury Crate SE game profile, update the Ally, inspect Windows, recalibrate the controls, and only then consider hardware repair.

1. Find out whether the problem is global or game-specific

Before changing drivers or opening the Ally, compare the controls in several places:

  1. Open Armoury Crate SE and test the sticks, buttons, and triggers there.
  2. Use the controls in the Windows desktop.
  3. Launch a different game.
  4. Test the game in which the controller is not responding.

If the controls work in Armoury Crate SE, Windows, or another game, the Ally’s hardware is probably not completely dead. Concentrate on the affected game’s controller settings, launcher, Steam Input configuration, and Armoury Crate SE profile.

If the same stick, button, or trigger fails everywhere—including Windows and multiple games—continue through the software checks, then treat a driver, firmware, connection, or hardware fault as more likely.

2. Select the correct Control Mode in Command Center

On the Ally, open Command Center and inspect Control Mode.

  • Gamepad Mode: use this when playing games that expect an Xbox-style controller.
  • Desktop Mode: use this when the sticks and buttons are configured to move the mouse, click, or enter keyboard commands in Windows.
  • Auto Mode: lets game profiles choose the control behavior automatically.

For a game in which the controller is not responding, select Gamepad Mode manually and relaunch the game. If you previously selected Gamepad Mode or Desktop Mode manually, that selection can override an Armoury Crate profile. Return to Auto Mode when you want the individual game profile to control the behavior again.

Why the controls may seem broken in Steam

The Ally’s sticks and buttons are intended to work in Steam Big Picture Mode. In Steam’s ordinary desktop interface, they may not navigate menus if the Ally is still using Gamepad Mode. Switch to Desktop Mode for mouse-and-keyboard navigation, or open Big Picture Mode for gamepad navigation.

3. Disable Embedded Controller when another controller is connected

If you are using a wired or Bluetooth controller, the game may continue selecting the Ally’s built-in controller instead of the external one. This can make the newly connected controller appear not to work, or cause the game to receive input from the wrong device.

  1. Connect the external controller.
  2. Open Command Center.
  3. Turn off Embedded Controller.
  4. Close and relaunch the game.

Do not treat this toggle as a universal fix. It is intended for input conflicts in which a game selects the Ally’s internal controller. The ROG Ally can support multiple controllers, but the game or launcher still decides which input device is active. If you want to use the Ally’s built-in controls again, re-enable Embedded Controller.

4. Check the affected game’s Armoury Crate SE profile

When only one game has the problem, inspect its profile in Armoury Crate SE rather than immediately reinstalling drivers.

  • Grip design conforms to the user's hands for a personalized fit
  • Enables extended play sessions without hand fatigue or strain
  • Textured grip surfaces increase friction for a better overall handheld experience and improved control
  1. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  2. Open the game’s Game Profile.
  3. Review its control mode and any game-specific control configuration.
  4. Confirm that Armoury Crate is launching the correct game executable.

A launcher may start a different executable from the one Armoury Crate initially detected. If that happens, open the profile’s Game Options, choose Game Info, and add the alternative executable path. Save the profile, completely close the game, and start it again through the corrected profile.

Game support is not identical across PC titles. Some games have their own controller switch, some depend on Steam Input, and some need to be restarted after the input device or control mode changes. Check the affected game’s controller settings and relaunch it after making changes.

5. Update Armoury Crate SE, drivers, Windows, and firmware

Outdated device software can affect controller detection and control behavior. Update the Ally before attempting deeper repairs.

Use Armoury Crate SE Update Center

  1. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Update Center.
  4. Install available device software, driver, and firmware updates.

Also open Settings > Windows Update in Windows and install available updates. For a model-specific BIOS or driver package, use the ASUS support page for the exact Ally model rather than downloading a package intended for a different handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not shut down the Ally or interrupt it during a BIOS or firmware installation. A failed interruption can create a serious boot problem. Keep the device connected to power and wait for the update to finish.

6. Check whether Windows detects the controller

If the built-in controls do not work in Windows, or if the controller has disappeared after an update, inspect Device Manager.

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for the controller or an unknown device, including entries with a yellow warning icon.
  3. Right-click the relevant entry and choose Properties.
  4. Read the Device status message and record any error code.

The error code matters because it can distinguish a disabled device, missing driver, failed driver start, or other Windows detection problem. Try the available Update driver or Uninstall device options only after recording the current status. Restart Windows afterward and install the appropriate driver package from ASUS for your precise ROG Ally model.

For a missing or outdated Windows driver, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional troubleshooting tool; continue to prioritize ASUS and Microsoft guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer Armoury Crate SE, Windows Update, Device Manager, and ASUS support packages over generic driver-updater software. An optional Windows maintenance utility may offer another troubleshooting interface, but it is not an ASUS-approved requirement and should not replace the manufacturer’s drivers or firmware.

7. Recalibrate the sticks and triggers

Calibration is useful when Windows and games detect an input but its range is inaccurate, the stick drifts, or a trigger does not reach its full range. It will not repair a physically disconnected or broken module.

  1. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Calibration.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions for the affected control.
  5. Calibrate the left stick, right stick, left trigger, right trigger, or gyro as appropriate.
  6. Retest in Windows and in more than one game.

Do not use repeated calibration to mask worsening drift or a loose stick. If the input is not detected at all, calibration may fail or produce no useful change; move to the hardware assessment below.

8. Decide whether the controller has a hardware fault

Hardware failure becomes more plausible when all of these are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The same input fails in Windows, Armoury Crate SE, and multiple games.
  • Gamepad Mode, Desktop Mode, and Auto Mode do not change the symptom.
  • Disabling Embedded Controller resolves no external-controller conflict.
  • Armoury Crate SE, Windows, and ASUS updates are installed.
  • Device Manager shows an error or does not detect the expected device.
  • Calibration cannot detect or correct the input.
  • The stick physically drifts, moves unusually, produces no movement, or feels loose.

These symptoms are consistent with a failed or damaged thumbstick module, but they do not identify the exact failed part by themselves. A loose or damaged control can also result from impact, liquid exposure, internal connection problems, or board damage.

9. Repair or replace the joystick only after the checks above

If the problem is isolated to a drifting, loose, inaccurate, or completely non-responsive thumbstick, a model-specific replacement may be appropriate. A ROG Ally replacement joystick is a repair component—not a general solution for a game profile, driver, or control-mode problem.

Before ordering, confirm all of the following:

  • Whether the part is for the original ROG Ally, the ROG Ally X, or a newer ROG Xbox Ally model.
  • Whether it is for the left or right side, if the listing distinguishes them.
  • That the part’s connector, mounting arrangement, and compatibility match your exact handheld.
  • Whether the repair requires replacing only the joystick module or additional parts.

The original ROG Ally and ROG Ally X should not be treated as interchangeable simply because their names are similar. Do not order a replacement based only on a generic “ROG Ally” title.

Opening the device can affect warranty or service eligibility, and a repair can cause additional damage if a cable, connector, or board is mishandled. If the Ally is under warranty, or if you are not comfortable working inside a handheld, contact ASUS service before buying parts.

10. Use an external controller as a diagnostic test

A Windows-compatible wired or Bluetooth controller can help separate a game configuration problem from an internal Ally problem. Connect the external controller and test the same game.

  • No-Slip Thumb Grips are made from a proprietary non-slip material to deliver more grip, comfort, and control than standard controllers. Upgrade your Handheld controllers with more grip for instense gaming and more comfort for longer sessions.
  • External controller works, built-in controls do not: the problem is more likely localized to the Ally’s internal controller path, its mode/profile selection, or its hardware.
  • Neither controller works: investigate the game’s controller support, Steam Input, launcher settings, Windows detection, and gamepad mode.
  • External controller works only after Embedded Controller is disabled: the game was likely selecting the Ally’s internal controller.

This test is a workaround and a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the Ally’s joystick must be replaced.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact ASUS

Contact ASUS service when the controller remains absent from Windows after official driver and firmware troubleshooting, when multiple controls fail at once, when there is visible physical or liquid damage, or when the device is still covered by warranty. Provide the model name, Windows and Armoury Crate status, Device Manager error code, affected controls, and the tests you have already completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one game is affected and the controls work elsewhere, contact the game’s publisher or launcher support instead. Include the game’s name, launcher, selected input mode, and whether restarting after changing the profile or controller setting made any difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my ROG Ally controller not working?

Open Command Center and check Control Mode. Select Gamepad Mode for games, Desktop Mode for mouse-and-keyboard navigation in Windows, or Auto Mode to let Armoury Crate game profiles choose. If another controller is connected, disable Embedded Controller and relaunch the game.

Why does the ROG Ally controller work in games but not in Steam?

Yes. The Ally’s controls may appear unresponsive in Steam’s regular desktop interface while working normally in Steam Big Picture Mode. Use Desktop Mode for Windows-style navigation or switch to Big Picture Mode for gamepad navigation.

Can calibrating the ROG Ally fix a dead joystick?

Calibration can help with drift, inaccurate stick ranges, or triggers that are detected but do not reach their full range. It cannot repair a physically broken, disconnected, or missing joystick module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are ROG Ally replacement joysticks compatible with every Ally model?

Not necessarily. The original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and newer ROG Xbox Ally models may use different compatible parts. Confirm the exact model and the left/right side before ordering a replacement joystick.

The Bottom Line

Start with Command Center > Control Mode: use Gamepad Mode for games, Desktop Mode for Windows navigation, and Auto Mode when Armoury Crate profiles should take over. If another controller is connected, disable Embedded Controller and relaunch the game. Then check the game profile, update through Armoury Crate SE and Windows, inspect Device Manager, and calibrate the controls. Consider a model-specific joystick replacement only when the same input fails across Windows and multiple games after those checks.
