How to Fix an FFmpeg Playlist Skipping Videos in a YouTube Live Stream

A playlist jump is often tied to incompatible streams or inaccurate duration data. Identify the FFmpeg input, inspect the boundary and choose the matching concat workflow.

A video jump at a playlist boundary is usually caused by incompatible inputs or incorrect duration and timestamp information—not a missing loop flag. First identify which playlist format FFmpeg is reading, then inspect the files and FFmpeg’s log at the jump. The right fix depends on whether the files have compatible streams: use the concat demuxer for compatible files you want to join without re-encoding, or the concat filter when the inputs need to be re-encoded.

Identify what FFmpeg means by “playlist”

FFmpeg can read different kinds of playlists and inputs. A concat-demuxer playlist is a text script that lists media files for FFmpeg to read one after another. An HLS/M3U8 playlist is a different input format, and other workflows may use different playlist mechanisms. Diagnose the input your command actually uses; a fix for the concat demuxer may not apply to an HLS input.

Trace the skipped transition before changing the command

  1. Save the exact command and playlist. Keep the full FFmpeg command and the list in its original order. Note which two entries surround the jump.
  2. Capture the log around that point. Look for the files FFmpeg opens and the timestamps, duration or decoding messages near the transition. Compare the reported order with the playlist; this helps distinguish a file being omitted from a boundary that merely appears to jump.
  3. Inspect every listed file. Compare its streams, codecs, time bases and reported duration. For the concat demuxer, FFmpeg requires matching streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Its timestamp placement for the next file depends on the duration assigned to the preceding file, so an inaccurate duration can produce boundary artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
  4. Check the media itself. A truncated file or a duration estimate that does not reflect the actual media can make the next item start at the wrong point. If the files have different codecs, dimensions, aspect ratios or other stream properties, do not assume stream copy will make them compatible.

Choose the concat method that matches the files

Method Use it when Re-encoding Key constraint
Concat demuxer The files have compatible streams and you want to join them without re-encoding. Not required when stream-copying compatible inputs. Inputs must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases; duration information affects where later files begin.
Concat filter The inputs need to be concatenated as part of an output workflow that re-encodes them. Yes, as part of the filter workflow. Choose output properties that make the inputs suitable for the same output; do not treat this as equivalent to stream-copy concatenation.

FFmpeg’s concat FAQ describes the concat filter for joining while re-encoding. For varied inputs, normalizing the files to common stream properties before using the concat demuxer is another practical option; an FFmpeg-user reply discussing files with different codecs, sizes and aspect ratios explains why that can be necessary, but the official documentation remains the reference for demuxer requirements: FFmpeg-user mailing-list reply.

Check YouTube only if FFmpeg handles the boundary correctly

If the local FFmpeg log shows the expected transition but viewers still see freezing, a poor-looking cut or an unhealthy stream, investigate the stream path as well as the playlist. YouTube recommends checking Live Control Room stream health and encoder messages, reviewing the encoder output and local archive, and testing the outbound connection when needed. A local recording can help establish whether the defect is already present before YouTube receives the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Verify encoder settings for the actual stream

Encoder settings do not repair a concat-demuxer mismatch, but they can cause a separate stream-quality problem. YouTube’s guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS ingest, supported video and audio codecs, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s official table for the stream’s actual codec, resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before changing those values.

Common symptoms and what to check

  • The jump happens at the same file boundary each time: inspect those two files’ stream properties and the preceding file’s reported duration.
  • FFmpeg reports files in an unexpected order: compare the command’s input and playlist paths with the files opened in the log.
  • The playlist contains mixed media properties: normalize the files to compatible streams or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes.
  • The local output is smooth but the YouTube broadcast freezes or degrades: inspect Live Control Room health, encoder messages, the local archive and outbound connection.
  • Only the live stream looks unstable at a particular resolution or frame rate: verify the selected codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for that exact output.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than diagnosing a local FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploads to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
