How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Going Out of Sync Over Time

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check whether the audio-video drift is already present in a local recording, then compare the beginning of the recording with a later point. A growing offset usually calls for checking timestamps and clock sources; a steady offset is a different problem. If the local recording stays in sync but YouTube playback drifts, investigate the encoder and YouTube ingest path before changing audio timestamps. The right fix depends on where the error starts and how it changes.

Diagnose where and how the stream drifts

Do not begin by adding a delay or changing several encoder settings at once. Make a local recording from the same setup and compare synchronization near its beginning and later in the recording. You can inspect playback statistics with:

ffplay -stats path/to/local-recording

FFplay’s statistics include audio/video synchronization drift. The recording helps distinguish a problem in FFmpeg’s local output from one that appears later in delivery.

What you observe Where to investigate first
The offset grows in the local recording Source timing, timestamp relationships, and audio resampling.
The offset is roughly constant from start to finish A fixed start-time mismatch; measure it before considering a timestamp offset.
The local recording is synchronized, but YouTube playback drifts Encoder output, YouTube ingest and stream health, CPU load, and outbound connection.

This is a diagnostic guide, not a remote diagnosis: the cause in a particular stream depends on its FFmpeg command, input devices, and local recording. Avoid using a constant delay to conceal progressive drift; it may align one moment while leaving later playback out of sync.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test audio resampling against meaningful timestamps

FFmpeg’s aresample filter can adjust audio to track timestamps by filling or trimming samples, or by stretching or squeezing audio. With the swr resampler, compensation is disabled by default. Its async option enables timestamp-based compensation; a value of 1 enables filling and trimming, while larger settings specify a maximum amount of sample stretching or squeezing per second. See the FFmpeg resampler documentation.

As a controlled test, try:

-af "aresample=async=1:first_pts=0"

This is not a universal drift fix. Timestamp compensation helps only if the timestamps provide a meaningful reference; it cannot make unrelated or unreliable device clocks agree. The first_pts=0 setting assumes the first audio presentation timestamp should be zero. Depending on the input, that can add silence at the start or trim samples with negative timestamps. Check a local recording at both the beginning and later on, and remove or tune the option if the start is wrong or the audio develops artifacts.

Use offsets for a measured fixed mismatch, not progressive drift

When one input starts a known amount early or late, -itsoffset adds a specified offset to that input’s timestamps. It addresses a fixed timing difference, not a mismatch that grows throughout a stream.

For multiple inputs, -isync can adjust a target input’s timestamps relative to a reference input’s start time. FFmpeg documents that the timestamps should derive from the same clock source for the expected result. It is therefore not a general fix for independent capture-device clocks that drift apart. Read the FFmpeg command-line documentation and check the documentation installed with your build before using either option.

Check the encoder and YouTube ingest path

If the local archive is in sync but YouTube playback is not, compare the encoder’s output and YouTube’s ingest health before adjusting audio timestamps. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the preview, health indicator, and any error messages. YouTube’s guidance recommends representative tests with audio and motion like the actual stream, and monitoring stream health.

  • Review the stream directly in the encoder and inspect its error messages.
  • Compare the encoder output with the local archive to identify where the mismatch first appears.
  • Check CPU load for encoder strain.
  • Test the outbound internet connection if the encoder output appears healthy.
  • Check the current YouTube encoder settings guidance and Live Control Room errors for ingest or audio-setting problems before changing codec, bitrate, or latency speculatively.

YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and supported ingest formats can change. Consult its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and live-streaming error guidance for the settings and messages that apply to your stream. YouTube also recommends: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.”

Verify the change before relying on it

  1. Run a representative test with audio and movement similar to the stream you plan to broadcast.
  2. Record the local output and check synchronization near the beginning and later in the test.
  3. Review YouTube playback and the Live Control Room health messages.
  4. If drift remains, note whether it grows and whether it occurs locally or only on YouTube before changing another setting.

FFmpeg documentation is generated for the newest revision; option availability and behavior may differ in older builds. Confirm support in the documentation for your installed version. YouTube’s accepted formats and settings can also change, so check its current guidance before a production stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg synchronization fix. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
