Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst find out where frames are being lost: during capture, while FFmpeg encodes or paces the stream, or on the network path to YouTube. A choppy picture alone cannot identify the cause. Compare FFmpeg’s own progress with YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages during a short test, then change one setting that matches the evidence and test again.
Locate the point where frames are being lost
A Raspberry Pi model, input source, FFmpeg build, encoder, command, resolution, frame rate and log are all needed to diagnose a specific stream. Without those details, no single command or setting is a reliable universal fix. Use this sequence to separate local processing trouble from ingest trouble before changing the pipeline.
- Run a representative test. Before the stream matters, test with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube Help recommends testing beforehand with representative audio and movement, checking upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health.
- Watch FFmpeg’s progress output. When progress statistics are shown, note the
frame, fpsandspeedvalues over time. If processing falls behind real time or the output stops advancing smoothly, investigate capture and encoding first. A falling-behind output is evidence of a local processing or pacing problem, not proof of which component is responsible. - Check YouTube Studio separately. Compare the same test with the stream-health messages in YouTube’s live control room. If FFmpeg remains on time but YouTube reports an ingest problem, investigate sustained upload capacity, bitrate and the network route rather than immediately lowering camera settings.
- Change one relevant setting, then repeat the same test. Keep the input, motion, audio and duration comparable so you can tell whether the change helped. Avoid changing resolution, encoder, bitrate and buffering together.
FFmpeg options depend on the installed build and selected encoder. Check the options exposed by your local build—for example, ffmpeg -h encoder=ENCODER_NAME—and consult the FFmpeg documentation before adding encoder-specific flags. Replace ENCODER_NAME with the encoder actually in use.
Check whether capture is overloading the Pi
If the camera input itself is missing frames, reduce the work before changing YouTube ingest settings. Try a lower capture resolution or frame rate that still meets the stream’s needs, then repeat the representative test. If that fixes the problem while the encoder and network remain unchanged, capture load was a likely contributor.

Raspberry Pi’s camera guidance discusses disabling preview and software colour denoise, and checking for CPU clock throttling, as possible ways to reduce load in demanding high-frame-rate capture. That advice is specifically framed around capture above 60 fps; treat it as a set of clues for a demanding capture path, not a guaranteed fix for every 30 fps stream.
If monitoring points to CPU clock throttling, check that the cooling solution is compatible with your exact Pi model and case. Cooling cannot correct a wrong encoder choice, timestamp or pacing problem, or an uplink that cannot sustain the stream.

Choose encoding advice for your Pi generation
Identify the board and actual encoder before copying advice from another Raspberry Pi setup. Raspberry Pi’s current camera documentation says that Pi 5 uses software video encoders, which can have more output latency than older hardware encoders. A Pi 4-class hardware H.264 path may be available depending on the board and software stack; do not assume it is available on Pi 5 or in every installation.
| Path | What to verify | Relevant trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Pi 4-class hardware H.264, where available | Confirm that the installed camera stack and FFmpeg/libav path actually select the hardware encoder. Raspberry Pi documents libav use of hardware H.264 encoding when present. | Hardware-encoder assumptions do not necessarily carry over to another board or software stack. |
| Pi 5 software encoding | Confirm the selected software encoder and check whether FFmpeg can maintain real-time progress at the chosen output settings. | Raspberry Pi documents greater output latency than the older hardware encoders. On the documented camera path, --low-latency changes encoder options so frames are emitted sooner; Raspberry Pi notes slightly lower coding efficiency, slightly less efficient multicore use and a potentially slightly reduced maximum frame rate. Its documentation says the mode still readily achieves 1080p30. |
The --low-latency setting belongs to Raspberry Pi’s documented camera path; do not assume it is an FFmpeg flag or applies to an unrelated capture pipeline. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance application note also concerns Pi 5-series computers, not every Pi model or encoder combination.

Set YouTube ingest targets the Pi and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current published ingest recommendations include RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Configure the relevant encoder options in the syntax supported by your build. A platform recommendation is not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode at that rate or that an internet connection can sustain it.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s H.264 ingest recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are not Raspberry Pi performance benchmarks or a measure of what your connection can reliably deliver. If FFmpeg falls behind, try a lighter resolution or frame rate and retest; if local processing remains on time but YouTube reports unstable ingest, measure sustained upload capacity and select a bitrate the connection can hold reliably.

Investigate network delivery and buffering
When local FFmpeg progress stays on time but YouTube’s stream health indicates a delivery problem, check the available upload headroom and whether it remains stable during the test. A short speed-test peak does not by itself establish that the full stream bitrate is sustainable. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.
Buffer settings are topology-specific. Raspberry Pi documents an example using MediaMTX in which undersized UDP receive buffers can drop data and cause pauses. That example is a useful lead only when the workflow actually uses the relevant UDP path. Changing those UDP buffer settings is not an automatic fix for a direct RTMP or RTMPS connection to YouTube.

Troubleshoot common remaining symptoms
- The picture is choppy, but FFmpeg stays on time and YouTube shows no ingest warning: the symptom alone does not prove a dropped-frame cause. Check the source preview or a local recording, then compare with the live output during the same representative test.
- FFmpeg steadily falls behind: treat this as a local capture, encoding or pacing issue. Reduce one workload-setting such as capture resolution or frame rate, or check the selected encoder against the Pi generation, then retest.
- FFmpeg stays on time, but YouTube reports an ingest issue: measure sustained upload capacity, verify the configured bitrate and inspect the network path. Do not assume a capture tweak will fix delivery.
- A copied encoder option is rejected or has no effect: verify that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and option. Encoder-specific flags are not interchangeable.
- Pauses occur in a workflow that uses UDP and MediaMTX: inspect receive-buffer sizing against Raspberry Pi’s documented MediaMTX example. Do not apply that example’s sysctl values to a different topology without confirming the relevant UDP path.
Keep YouTube rights and channel rules in view
Technical stability does not grant permission to stream game footage, game audio, music or other material. Use content you own or are licensed to use, and check the applicable rights and YouTube rules for the material and channel. A stream made from repeated or previously recorded material may also raise channel-policy questions separate from dropped frames; review YouTube’s current rules rather than assuming that a technically valid live feed is automatically eligible for every channel feature.
Or let it run in the cloud
