First find out whether OBS itself is showing a black preview or whether a working preview fails to reach the streaming service. If the preview and a short local recording are black, start with the OBS scene, capture source, and Linux display session—not OCI network rules. If local video works but the remote stream does not, investigate the destination and outbound connectivity.
An Oracle Cloud VPS does not automatically provide a desktop for OBS to capture. On Linux, display capture needs an active, accessible graphical session and a compatible capture method; an encoder or GPU cannot create pixels when there is no usable display. The exact fix depends on your OS, session type, source, OCI shape, and logs.
Identify which OBS failure you have
OBS sends its output directly to the selected streaming service; OBS is not a relay service. A black local image and a failed remote connection are different problems, so test locally before changing cloud networking.
| What you see | Investigate first | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview and local recording are black | Scene and source visibility, capture method, display session, permissions, and graphics stack | It does not show that OCI networking is broken. |
| Preview and recording work, but the remote stream is absent | Streaming destination, service state, outbound path, authentication, and OBS logs | It does not show that capture is broken. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or an unstable connection | Network capacity and stability to the streaming endpoint, and whether the configured bitrate suits the connection | It does not show that the network caused a black local preview. |
| Hardware encoder is unavailable | GPU shape, driver, OBS build, and encoder compatibility | It does not establish whether source capture works. |
OBS’s Help Portal distinguishes connection and dropped-frame problems from local source issues. For capture symptoms, consult OBS’s capture troubleshooting guidance.

Fix a black preview or local recording
- Check the scene and source. In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream. Confirm the expected source is present, enabled, and visible in the Sources list. Open its properties and verify that it points to the intended display or window. If practical, test a different known-good source or scene to isolate the problem.
- Confirm the VPS has a display to capture. Establish whether the Linux VPS has an active graphical session and whether it is X11 or Wayland. Check how OBS is launched and whether the source type supports that session. If you connect by SSH, do not assume that SSH created a desktop: a headless VM needs a virtual or remote display that is actually producing pixels and is visible to the OBS process.
- Check the capture path and permissions. A display or window capture source must be able to access the intended session. Make sure OBS runs in the session you mean to capture and that the selected source is compatible with it. The right setup varies by Linux distribution, session type, and remote-display method; there is no single universal capture setting for every OCI VPS.
- Verify graphics initialization. OBS’s Linux installation guidance lists OpenGL 3.3 or later and discusses X server prerequisites. Check that OBS can initialize the graphics stack available in the session. If it cannot, investigate the display server, graphics support, and OBS startup errors before changing stream output settings.
- Retest locally. Once the preview shows the intended image, make a short local recording. If both work, the capture path is producing frames; move to output and connectivity checks only if the remote stream still fails.
Check an OCI GPU only if your setup needs one
A generic OCI VPS should not be assumed to include a GPU. If your chosen configuration requires one for rendering or encoding, verify that the instance shape actually provides the needed GPU, that it is available in your region and availability domain, and that your tenancy has the applicable quota or service limit. Confirm that the driver matches the operating-system image and GPU.
Oracle’s Compute Shapes documentation covers shape availability and GPU context. Its GPU workstation tutorial describes an example configuration; it is not a universal OBS setup. Oracle’s Platform Images documentation is relevant when checking image and driver considerations.

There is no established best OCI shape for this black-screen symptom. Choose based on whether you need GPU rendering or hardware encoding, whether the shape and quota are available, driver compatibility, and—separately—whether OBS can access a working display session.
Separate encoding from capture
Encoding happens after OBS has captured frames. Selecting a hardware encoder such as NVENC can encode captured video when supported hardware and drivers are available, but it cannot supply a desktop image or fix an inaccessible display source. First confirm that preview and local recording contain the expected image; then choose an encoder compatible with the actual hardware and installed drivers. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.

Investigate connectivity only when the local image works
If the OBS preview and recording are correct but the service receives no video, check the configured service and destination, stream authentication, OBS connection status, and outbound connectivity from the instance. If OBS reports dropped frames, assess the connection to the actual streaming endpoint and whether your bitrate is appropriate for that path; a specific bitrate cannot be prescribed without knowing the service, endpoint, and available connection.

Inspect the OBS log for source initialization, display or graphics, encoder, and connection errors. OBS notes that some security or firewall products may affect capture or connectivity; its Known Application Conflicts guidance is a useful reference. Change one setting at a time and repeat the local recording or connection test relevant to the symptom. That makes it easier to identify which change mattered.

Common causes and targeted fixes
- The scene is empty or its source is hidden: select the intended scene, enable the source, and verify its capture target in source properties.
- OBS is running without access to the intended desktop: launch OBS in the active graphical session and use a capture method supported by that session.
- The VM is headless: provide an active virtual or remote display that produces pixels and is accessible to OBS, or use a workflow that does not depend on capturing a nonexistent desktop.
- OBS cannot initialize Linux graphics: check the session, X server prerequisites, graphics stack, and OpenGL 3.3-or-later requirement in the OBS Linux guidance.
- The hardware encoder is missing: verify the GPU shape, quota and availability, driver installation, OBS build, and encoder compatibility. Diagnose capture independently.
- Local video works, but the stream will not connect or drops: verify service configuration and authentication, then investigate outbound connectivity and the relevant OCI and OS firewall layers.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery restarts the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera capture. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
