Work from the least disruptive checks to the symptom-specific ones: restart the PC, install available Windows and component-driver updates, repair the game through its launcher, close unnecessary background apps, and compare your PC with that game’s official requirements. Then use when the problem happens—before launch, after an update, during play, or alongside heat or a full-PC restart—to narrow the next check. There is no universal fix for an unspecified game and PC; launch problems can have different causes across hardware and software configurations.
Start with the checks that apply to any symptom
- Restart the PC. A restart is a standard first step in Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guidance: Steam: Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”.
- Check for Windows and component-driver updates. Steam identifies outdated CPU, graphics, or audio drivers as possible contributors to performance problems. Use Windows and the relevant hardware manufacturer’s documented update method; without knowing your PC and game, there is no responsible one-size-fits-all driver or version to recommend.
- Compare your PC with the game’s official system requirements. Check the exact CPU, GPU, memory, and operating-system requirements on the game’s official store or support page. A PC near or below the requirements may have launch or performance trouble; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth play.
- Close non-essential applications. Shut down unnecessary programs before testing the game, especially other demanding applications. Steam recommends closing unnecessary applications and removing unneeded startup programs when troubleshooting poor performance.
- Repair the game’s installation in its launcher. Instructions for Steam are below. For another store client, use its documented file verification or repair feature rather than assuming Steam’s menu labels apply.
Repair game files through the launcher
On Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open your Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
Steam says verification can help when content is missing or a game crashes, and it may take several minutes. One or more files can fail to verify normally when they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. See Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
On other launchers
Use the repair or verification option documented by the client where you own or installed the game. For problems that started after an update, 505 Games also recommends checking file integrity through the relevant store client, including Steam, Epic Games Store, or Microsoft Store: 505 Games: post-update troubleshooting. A verification check is a reasonable first step, not proof that an update damaged files or that verification will fix the issue.
If the game will not launch
It closes before reaching the menu
Complete the restart, update, requirements, background-app, and file-verification checks first. Note whether the game shows an error, briefly appears in the taskbar, or exits without a message; that detail can help the game’s support team distinguish a launch failure from a crash during play.

You see “Missing Executable”
Steam identifies antivirus software mistakenly quarantining a game file as a common possible cause. Check your security software’s detection or quarantine history and confirm that the affected file belongs to a legitimate copy of the game before restoring or allowing it. If you confirm the file is legitimate, keep any security exception narrow and specific to that file or game location. Restart Steam and verify the game files if a download failure or damaged installation is also possible. See Steam: Missing Executable.
If the game crashes during play
First note whether only the game closes or the entire PC freezes, shows a blue screen, or restarts. If the game alone exits, verify its files, close unnecessary applications, and check for relevant driver updates. If the PC itself becomes unstable, do not assume the game is the cause: record exactly what happens and seek help for the broader PC issue as well as the game.

Pay attention to what happens just before the crash. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance notes that overheating may be more likely when the PC slows or stutters before a crash or restart. That symptom is a reason to inspect cooling, not enough on its own to identify a faulty component.
If the game stutters or runs poorly
Change video options one at a time
Steam says changing video options can increase FPS. Lower or adjust one graphics setting, play the same area under similar conditions, and note whether the stutter changes before altering another setting. This makes it easier to identify which change helped; there is no universally best preset established for every open-world RPG and PC.

Check ventilation if performance worsens before a crash
Look for blocked vents, restricted airflow, and visible dust on vents and fans. Steam lists poor ventilation and dust on vents, fans, or heatsinks as possible overheating causes, and notes that resolving these issues may require hardware cooling or ventilation fixes. Diagnose the airflow problem before buying parts: a stutter alone does not establish that a component needs replacement. See Steam: Hardware Performance Troubleshooting.
Use the pattern to decide what to check next
| Pattern | First useful checks | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Won’t launch, with no known recent change | Restart, updates, requirements, background applications, then launcher file verification. | Launch problems have multiple possible causes; the pattern alone does not identify one. |
| Stuttering or crashing began after an update | Verify files through the game’s store client and consult the game’s current support page. | This is a supported first check, not evidence by itself that the update damaged the installation. |
| Stuttering or slowing comes before a crash or restart | Inspect airflow, blocked vents, and dust; note whether the whole PC or only the game fails. | Heat is one possible explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis. |
| Only one game has the problem | Focus first on that game’s files, requirements, settings, and official support guidance. | This helps narrow the investigation but does not prove the game itself is at fault. |
| Several games or the whole PC are unstable | Record the system-wide symptoms and include them when seeking PC support. | A problem affecting the whole PC should not automatically be attributed to one RPG. |
What to send the game’s support team
If the standard checks do not resolve the problem, contact the game developer or publisher’s support team with enough detail to make the report actionable. Steam recommends contacting the developer when its general steps fail.
