Rebuilding the PS5 database is a non-destructive Safe Mode troubleshooting step designed to rescan the console’s storage and recreate its content index. Sony says it can help with system-feature problems and game icons that remain after deletion. It does not normally delete installed games, saved data, screenshots, clips, or settings—but it is not the same as clearing the system cache, repairing console storage, or resetting the PS5.
On current PS5 system software, the route is Safe Mode > Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. The wording may change in a future update, but the procedure below reflects Sony’s current documentation checked in August 2026.
Quick answer
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button again, releasing it after the second beep—roughly seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense with a USB data cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Rebuild Database, confirm, and leave the console connected to power until it finishes.
Sony says Rebuild Database does not erase user data. Do not select Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) unless you have backed up your data and deliberately intend to erase the console.
What “Rebuild Database” does
The PS5 keeps an internal index of installed games, apps, media, and other content. Rebuilding scans the console’s storage and creates a new version of that index. This can correct content-listing and system-interface problems, such as a deleted game icon that remains on the Home screen or installed content that does not appear correctly.

It is not a game reinstallation, SSD format, factory reset, or guaranteed performance upgrade. It does not repair a failing drive, slow internet connection, PSN outage, damaged saved data, or necessarily corrupted files belonging to one game. Sony describes it as a troubleshooting option for system-feature issues and content-index problems—not as a universal way to increase frame rates or shorten every loading screen.
When to try it
Rebuild the database when you are seeing symptoms such as:
- A deleted game icon remains visible.
- Games or apps do not appear correctly in the Home screen or library.
- The interface behaves inconsistently or feels unusually sluggish.
- A game or app repeatedly fails to start after restarting and updating.
- A download or update remains stuck after ordinary troubleshooting.
- The PS5 reports an error for which Sony recommends database rebuilding.
For a problem affecting only one title, deleting and reinstalling that game may be more relevant. For startup or storage errors, use Repair Console Storage instead of assuming that rebuilding the database will repair the underlying storage.
Before you begin
- Close games and apps if the console is operating normally.
- Make sure the PS5 is fully shut down, not in Rest Mode.
- Use a wired USB cable that supports data. A charge-only cable may not let Safe Mode recognize the DualSense.
- Do not disconnect power while Safe Mode is working.
- Back up important local data before storage troubleshooting, especially before any reset or system-software reinstallation.
Rebuilding is intended to preserve data, so a backup is not a mandatory precondition. It is still sensible when the console is unstable or contains irreplaceable local saves. Sony warns that interrupting backup or restore operations can cause data loss or corruption.
How to enter PS5 Safe Mode
- Press and hold the PS5 power button for about three seconds. Wait for the console to shut down completely.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Keep holding after the first beep. Release the button after the second beep, which occurs roughly seven seconds later.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
Safe Mode starts the console with only basic functions active, providing options for display, storage, system software, and reset troubleshooting. The PS5 menu is different from older PS4 instructions: the relevant current menu is Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
How to clear the PS5 system software cache
Use cache clearing for general system-feature problems, interface glitches, or a performance drop that appears to involve the PS5 itself rather than one particular game.
- Enter Safe Mode.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Select Clear System Software Cache.
- Confirm and allow the PS5 to restart.
Clearing the cache removes temporary system software data. It is separate from rebuilding the database, which scans storage and recreates the content index.

- Enter Safe Mode using the second-beep procedure.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Select Rebuild Database.
- Confirm the operation.
- Wait for the scan and rebuild to finish.
- Let the PS5 restart normally, then check the original problem.
There is no reliable fixed completion time. The duration depends on the amount and condition of stored content and the problem being processed. Do not shut down the console, unplug it, or repeatedly press the power button while the operation is underway.
What it deletes—and what it does not
Sony’s Safe Mode documentation says Rebuild Database does not erase data. It is not intended to delete:
- Installed games
- Installed apps
- Saved data
- Screenshots and video clips
- User settings
That protection does not apply to every Safe Mode option. Choose carefully:

Which fix should you choose?
Clear System Software Cache vs. Rebuild Database
Choose Clear System Software Cache when the whole interface or system features behave abnormally. Choose Rebuild Database when content listings are wrong, a deleted icon remains, or installed content is not indexed correctly. They appear in the same Safe Mode menu but perform different jobs.
Rebuild Database vs. Repair Console Storage
Rebuild Database recreates the content index. Repair Console Storage is intended for startup or storage problems and, according to Sony, does not erase data. If storage errors return after both operations, stop repeating them and move toward backup, software recovery, diagnostics, or repair.
Rebuild Database vs. reinstalling a game
Rebuild when the issue affects the wider system or content listing. Reinstall when one game repeatedly crashes, fails to start, or produces an application-specific error after updates. Reinstalling uses bandwidth or disc time, but it directly replaces that title’s installed files.
Rebuild Database vs. a factory reset
A reset has a far higher data cost and should not be used merely because the PS5 feels slow. Back up first and reserve Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for cases where less-destructive recovery has failed.
A sensible troubleshooting order
There is no single Sony-mandated sequence for every fault, but this escalation minimizes unnecessary data loss:
- Save or sync important data.
- Restart the PS5 normally.
- Install available PS5 system-software and game updates.
- Check the download, network, account, or license issue involved.
- Clear the system software cache for a general system-feature problem.
- Rebuild the database.
- Delete and reinstall one affected game or app if the fault is isolated to it.
- Use Repair Console Storage for startup or storage symptoms.
- Update system software through Safe Mode if normal updating fails.
- Back up before considering a reset.
- Contact PlayStation Support or arrange repair if the fault persists.
If Safe Mode will not appear
A missing Safe Mode screen can be caused by the display connection, controller connection, power connection, or the console itself.
- Confirm that the PS5 is fully powered off.
- Try another HDMI cable or another input on the display.
- Try another USB cable for the controller. It must support data.
- Try another suitable power cable if one is available.
- Repeat the second-beep procedure.
- If Safe Mode still does not launch, hold the power button until the console shuts down, disconnect the power cable, leave it disconnected for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again.

If the controller does not work in Safe Mode
- Connect it with a wired USB cable before pressing the PS button.
- Try another USB port.
- Try a different cable that supports data rather than charging only.
- Press the PS button after the Safe Mode screen appears.
- Power down and repeat the procedure if the controller remains unrecognized.
If the PS5 keeps booting into Safe Mode
Follow Sony’s recovery path:
- Hold the power button until the console turns off.
- Unplug the power cable for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect it and power on.
- If it still starts in Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache.
- If the loop continues, use PlayStation Repairs or Support.
A persistent Safe Mode loop, recurring storage error, or failure across multiple games can indicate a deeper system-software or hardware problem. Rebuilding the database repeatedly is not a substitute for diagnosis.
If rebuilding does not fix the problem
Only one game or app is affected
Restart, check for updates, and delete the affected game or app. Reinstall it from the Game Library or disc. Rebuild the database if the content still appears incorrectly or the problem extends beyond that title.
A download or update is stuck
Test the internet connection, restart the console, and confirm that system software is current. If purchased content is involved, restore licenses where appropriate. Cancel and delete the stuck download, then try again. Rebuilding does not fix slow broadband, PSN outages, or a publisher’s server-side problem.
The PS5 has storage or startup problems
Try Repair Console Storage. If storage errors continue after repair and rebuilding, back up what you can and seek diagnostics or repair rather than repeatedly rebuilding.

Normal system-software updating fails
You can update through Safe Mode with a USB drive. Sony’s current procedure requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive containing:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPThe folder and file names must use uppercase letters. Sony lists approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update-file process and warns against unofficial update files.
- Prepare the USB drive with the
PS5folder and anUPDATEsubfolder. - Download the official update file and save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Insert the drive into the PS5.
- Enter Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
Use Sony’s official PS5 system-software instructions and do not use unofficial files.
How to back up before a reset
- Connect a compatible USB drive.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the data categories to include.
- Select Back Up and wait for the console to confirm completion.
Sony supports FAT32 and exFAT USB drives, although compatibility is not guaranteed for every device. A drive used as PS5 extended game storage is formatted differently and cannot also be used for the PS5 backup process.
Backups can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings. They do not include trophies, which must be synced separately, and they do not include games or apps stored on extended USB storage or an M.2 SSD. Restoring a backup erases data currently on the console, may require the same or newer system-software version, and disables Console Sharing and Offline Play until you enable it again. When to contact PlayStation Support
Arrange support or repair when the PS5 cannot reliably enter Safe Mode, repeatedly boots into Safe Mode, shows recurring storage errors, crashes across multiple games, fails after official system-software recovery, or displays symptoms consistent with a failing internal or added drive. An M.2 SSD can expand compatible game and app storage, but it is not a database-repair tool and will not fix system corruption or failing hardware.
