Most ASUS ROG Ally audio issues can be fixed without a reset. First correct Windows’ output selection and Volume Mixer settings, then disable Dolby and other audio effects. Update or reinstall the exact ASUS audio packages only if those checks fail.

Most ROG Ally audio problems are caused by Windows selecting the wrong output, an app-specific mute, Dolby or Windows audio effects, or a damaged/outdated ASUS audio driver. Start with Settings > System > Sound and Volume Mixer, then disable audio effects. Only after those checks should you reinstall drivers or consider hardware recovery.

This guide covers the 2023 ASUS ROG Ally (model RC71L), a Windows 11 handheld with built-in Smart Amplifier speakers, Dolby Atmos, a microphone array, Bluetooth, and a 3.5 mm headphone/microphone combo jack. The same Windows troubleshooting steps generally apply to the ROG Ally X, but download drivers for the exact model shown on your device—not simply the closest-looking product page.

Quick diagnosis: which symptom describes your Ally?

Symptom Most useful first checks
No sound anywhere Select the correct output, check master and app volume, then inspect or reinstall the ASUS audio driver.
Only one game or app is silent Check Windows 11 Volume Mixer and the game’s own audio-output setting.
Crackling or distortion, especially at low wattage Disable Dolby speaker/headphone effects, then turn off Windows audio enhancements and test another format.
Bluetooth says connected but there is no sound Select the Bluetooth headset explicitly as the Windows output, then remove and re-pair it.
Headphones work but built-in speakers do not Recheck the Speakers output and reinstall the model-specific ASUS audio and SmartAMP components before assuming hardware failure.
Playback works but voice chat does not Check the input device, microphone permissions, and whether a wired headset uses a four-conductor plug.

Why the ROG Ally has audio problems

1. Windows is using the wrong output—or the game is muted

The Ally can expose several audio destinations: internal speakers, a wired headset, Bluetooth headphones, USB-C audio, HDMI or monitor audio, and dock-connected devices. Windows may keep using a previous output after you disconnect or connect one of them.

  • GAME-READY STORAGE AND FAST MEMORY Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

There is also a separate volume level for each application. That is why Windows sounds can work while one game remains silent: the game may be muted or set to a very low level in Volume Mixer.

2. Dolby Atmos or Windows audio effects are producing distortion

ASUS specifically documents distorted sound in some games when the Ally is operating at low wattages and recommends disabling speaker and headphone effects in Dolby Access. Microsoft also identifies audio enhancements and incompatible default formats as possible causes of low, distorted, or crackling audio.

These settings are safe to test because they are reversible. Disable them before changing drivers or resetting Windows.

3. The ASUS/Realtek audio stack is outdated, disabled, or damaged

The ROG Ally’s audio path depends on more than a generic Windows sound driver. ASUS’s support downloads for the 2023 Ally include a Realtek Audio Driver, Realtek Codec Console, and a Cirrus SmartAMP driver relevant to the amplifier and speaker path. ASUS also notes that its audio packages are required in most cases for the device’s audio function.

A Windows update, incomplete driver installation, disabled device, or corrupted package can therefore make the speakers disappear or behave incorrectly. Driver versions change over time, so use the ASUS support page for the exact Ally model as the source of truth rather than downloading a package from a random driver website.

4. The issue is isolated to Bluetooth, a headset, one game, or microphone permissions

Bluetooth can appear connected while Windows is still sending sound to the internal speakers or another device. A wired headset can also expose a connector mismatch: ASUS specifies a four-conductor 3.5 mm headset for simultaneous headphone and microphone use through the Ally’s combo jack. A three-conductor microphone may not work as an external microphone through that port.

If game audio works but voice chat does not, Windows microphone privacy settings may be blocking the game or chat application.

Five fixes, in the safest order

Fix 1: Select the correct output and check every volume control

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select Speakers for the Ally’s internal speakers. Choose the named headset, Bluetooth device, USB-C audio device, or monitor instead when you want to use one of those.
  3. Raise the master volume and confirm the selected device is not disabled.
  4. Open Volume Mixer. Check both System and the affected game’s or application’s volume. Make sure neither is muted.
  5. If the Ally is connected to a monitor, dock, or TV, check that Windows has not selected a display with no speakers.
  6. Play a Windows system sound and test a second application.

If the second application works, the Windows audio path is probably functioning and the problem is more likely the game’s volume, output selection, or audio settings.

Fix 2: Disable Dolby Atmos and Windows audio enhancements

Use this fix first for crackling, low volume, or distortion that appears in a particular game or at a lower power mode.

  1. Open Dolby Access.
  2. Go to Settings > More Settings.
  3. Turn on Disable all speaker and headphones effects.
  4. Return to the affected game and test the same scene or sound.

Also test Windows enhancements:

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select the active output device.
  3. If available, set Audio enhancements to Off.
  4. If the problem continues, open the output device’s advanced settings and test a different default format.

For Bluetooth audio, a useful test format is 2-channel, 16-bit, 48 kHz. Do not change several formats and effects at once if you want to identify the cause; test one change, then retest.

Fix 3: Update Windows, Armoury Crate SE, BIOS, and ASUS audio packages

Use official update sources and restart after installation. Avoid mixing generic Realtek packages from third-party sites with ASUS’s model-specific components.

  1. Open Armoury Crate SE and use Update Center to check for available driver and firmware updates.
  2. Run Windows Update, install applicable updates, and restart the Ally.
  3. Open ASUS support for the exact Ally model identified in Windows or on the device.
  4. Install the current applicable Realtek Audio Driver and any relevant Cirrus SmartAMP or Dolby component listed for that model.
  5. Restart again and test both the internal speakers and a headset.

Do not hard-code or rely on a driver version mentioned in an older article. ASUS changes the packages and version numbers on its support page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Enable or reinstall the audio device in Device Manager

This is appropriate when the Speakers option has disappeared, Device Manager shows an error icon, or a normal update did not help.

  1. Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
  2. Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
  3. Also expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. If the speaker or audio device is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.
  5. If the device is present but broken, right-click the affected device and choose Uninstall device. Do not remove unrelated hardware.
  6. Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes, or restart Windows so it can detect the device again.
  7. If Windows restores only a generic or incomplete driver, install the correct audio package from ASUS for the exact Ally model.

When did the problem begin? If it started immediately after a Windows or driver update, the device’s Properties > Driver tab may offer Roll Back Driver. Use that option only when a previous driver is available and the timing strongly points to the update.

Fix 5: Isolate the failed audio path

Test a known-good alternate device. The result helps distinguish routing or driver trouble from a problem limited to the internal speakers, headphone jack, or Bluetooth connection.

Test a wired headset

Plug a known-good four-conductor 3.5 mm headset with microphone into the Ally’s combo jack. This can provide an immediate listening workaround and test whether Windows can produce audio outside the built-in speakers. It does not prove that buying a headset repairs the internal speakers.

If you need one for testing, a 3.5mm gaming headset with microphone is the most direct accessory match. Look for a four-conductor combo plug if you need both headphone playback and microphone input.

Reset Bluetooth audio

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound and explicitly select the Bluetooth headset under Output.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, select the headset, and remove it.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off for about 10 seconds, then turn it on again.
  4. Pair the headset again and retest.
  5. Install any available Bluetooth adapter driver update and restart Windows.

A Bluetooth gaming headset for ROG Ally can be a practical workaround, but it will not correct a broken internal speaker or a Windows driver problem. Windows must still select the paired headset as the output.

Try USB-C audio if the 3.5 mm jack is unreliable

A USB-C audio adapter or USB-C headset is another output path for an Ally with a damaged or unreliable headphone jack. Compatibility can vary between adapters, headsets, docks, and microphone implementations, so do not assume every USB-C audio accessory supports headset microphone input or works correctly through every dock.

Check microphone problems separately

If playback is normal but the built-in microphone or headset microphone does not work:

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound and choose the intended input device under Input.
  2. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  3. Turn on Microphone access.
  4. Turn on access for apps and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  5. Check the affected game’s or chat app’s own input-device setting.
  6. For a wired headset, confirm that it has a four-conductor combo plug rather than a three-conductor microphone connection that is incompatible with the Ally’s combined jack.

When to contact ASUS

Contact ASUS support after you have selected the correct output, checked Volume Mixer, disabled effects, updated the official packages, and tested an alternate audio device. Escalate sooner if the Ally has liquid or impact damage, the jack is physically loose, or the audio device repeatedly disappears from Device Manager.

If the internal speakers, wired audio, Bluetooth audio, and microphone all fail after driver reinstallation, back up important files and prepare for support or recovery. ASUS Cloud Recovery can restore the operating system and drivers, but it is a system-recovery measure—not a first-line audio fix. Recovery can affect installed software and user data, so back up first and make sure the Ally has adequate power and a reliable network connection.

What not to do

  • Do not assume a specific driver version fixes every ROG Ally audio problem.
  • Do not conclude that the speakers are physically defective before testing output selection, drivers, and an alternate audio device.
  • Do not expect a factory reset or Cloud Recovery to guarantee a repair of failed speaker hardware.
  • Do not download random Realtek or ASUS drivers from third-party driver sites when the official ASUS model page is available.
  • Do not treat a headset as a repair for the internal speakers; use it as a diagnostic test, workaround, or replacement listening device.

How do I fix crackling or distorted ROG Ally audio?

Open Dolby Access, go to Settings > More Settings, and turn on Disable all speaker and headphones effects. Also turn off Windows Audio enhancements for the active output and test another default format if distortion continues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Bluetooth headset connect to the ROG Ally but produce no sound?

Select the headset under Settings > System > Sound > Output, remove it under Settings > Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth off for about 10 seconds, turn it back on, and pair the headset again.

Why does my ROG Ally headset microphone not work?

For simultaneous headphone and microphone use through the Ally’s 3.5 mm combo jack, use a four-conductor headset. Also enable Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone > Microphone access, app access, and desktop-app access.

The Bottom Line

For most ROG Ally audio failures, select Speakers or the intended headset in Settings > System > Sound, check Volume Mixer, and disable Dolby and Windows audio effects. If that fails, update or reinstall the exact ASUS audio packages for your Ally model. Use a compatible headset to isolate the problem before considering ASUS recovery or hardware support.
