If a prerecorded music stream sounds distorted, first find where the distortion enters the audio chain: the original file, your streaming software, or YouTube playback. Digital clipping is caused by audio peaks reaching the full-scale ceiling; lower the signal before encoding or use suitable limiting, then check the result. Changing bitrate or sample rate will not restore peaks already clipped in the source.
Why does prerecorded music sound distorted on YouTube Live?
Clipping is a peak-level problem. OBS explains that audio in the final stream or recording must stay below 0 dBFS—the digital full-scale ceiling—or viewers may hear clipping distortion. A file that is already clipped has lost parts of its waveform; an encoder setting cannot reconstruct them.
Not every audio warning means clipping. YouTube can also report ingest or configuration issues such as an unsupported or unexpected codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, missing or multiple audio streams, or a mismatch between primary and backup streams. Those need to be diagnosed separately from audio peaks that are simply too high.
Find which stage is distorting
- Listen to the source file. Check the loudest tracks, transitions, and other material used in the playlist. If the distortion is present in the original file, replace it with a clean source or repair it before streaming where possible.
- Watch the software meter during loud passages. In OBS, play the loudest material and monitor the audio peak meter. If the signal reaches or exceeds 0 dBFS, reduce gain on the source or mixer before encoding, or apply an appropriate limiter. Recheck the output after processing. OBS documents a -9 dBFS Permitted Maximum Level marker on its meter, but explains its margin rationale; that marker is not a universal target for every music stream.
- Compare the checkpoints. Listen to the source, a local recording or output from the encoder, and the viewer-facing YouTube playback. If the source is clean but the local output is distorted, investigate the software signal path and processing. If the local output is clean but YouTube playback is not, check the stream configuration and compare playback stages. This comparison helps isolate the cause; it is not a guarantee that one setting will fix every setup.
- Review YouTube stream health. Check its indicators and messages for audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, and primary/backup mismatches. Correct any stated configuration issue, but do not treat every audio health message as a clipping diagnosis.
- Test representative material before going live. Include loud tracks and transitions similar to those in the continuous playlist, then listen to the actual stream playback and check health messages.
Use compatible YouTube stereo audio settings
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 128 kbps for stereo. These are ingest recommendations, not cures for a source or software signal that is already clipping. Follow the current encoder guidance for your setup, and use stream-health messages to identify configuration problems.

| Setting or check | Guidance | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Encoder compatibility |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | Encoder configuration |
| Stereo sample rate | 44.1 kHz | Audio ingest configuration |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 kbps | Audio ingest configuration |
| Peak level | Keep final stream or recording output below 0 dBFS | Reduces digital clipping risk; it does not repair a clipped source |
For an active 24/7 stream, revisit the meter and stream health after changing playlist files or processing. A brief test cannot confirm tracks or transitions that were not part of it.
Common symptoms and fixes
- The original track already sounds harsh or broken: the distortion is in the source. Use a clean replacement or repair the file; changing the live bitrate will not restore clipped peaks.
- The source is clean but the OBS meter reaches the ceiling: reduce source or mixer gain before encoding, or use appropriate limiting, then listen to a new local output.
- The local output is clean but YouTube playback distorts: inspect the stream’s audio configuration and health messages, then compare playback stages to isolate where the change occurs.
- YouTube reports an audio warning but you do not hear clipping: match the message to its stated codec, bitrate, sample-rate, channel-count, or stream-mismatch issue. A configuration warning is not by itself proof of clipped peaks.
- A test sounded clean, but a later track clips: check the new file and its transitions, watch the meter during its loudest passage, and test that material in the actual stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream; it does not go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud handles playback, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It does not fix clipping already present in a source file or guarantee a clean audio mix, so check your files and audio levels before uploading.
