A steady offset may be corrected in OBS with Sync Offset; growing drift usually calls for checking the devices, audio settings, and workload in your recording setup. If you are editing an existing Clipchamp project, you can detach and manually realign its audio.
Diagnose the problem before changing settings
Make a short test recording that includes an obvious visible event and its matching sound, such as a clap or click. Compare them near the start, then compare them again later in the file.
- About the same gap throughout: This is consistent with a fixed offset. Try a capture-time sync adjustment in OBS or manually realign a separate audio track in an editor.
- The gap gets larger or smaller over time: This is drift. A single fixed offset cannot explain accumulating drift, so inspect the capture chain, device settings, and computer workload.
This is a practical check, not a standardized test: there is no universal tolerance or required test length. Most importantly, judge the saved file, not just what you hear while monitoring.
Correct a fixed offset in OBS
Adjust Sync Offset and verify a recording
- In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties for the affected audio source.
- Find Sync Offset and adjust it in milliseconds. There is no universally correct value; the appropriate setting depends on the audio and video processing in your setup.
- Record another short sample containing a visible event and matching sound.
- Play the saved sample and check the alignment. Keep the adjustment only if it improves the recording itself.
Focusrite’s OBS setup guidance identifies the Sync Offset field and recommends testing for the particular computer and setup; it does not prescribe a standard delay value. Avoid copying a number from another system as if it were a general fix.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Investigate drift that grows over time
When the sync gap changes as the file plays, examine how audio and video are being captured rather than assuming a static delay will solve it. OBS user discussions raise mismatched audio refresh rates, system workload, and independent clocks in physical devices as possible leads. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not a definitive diagnosis for every recording setup.
Check devices and audio settings
- Identify which devices supply the video and audio, including any USB capture device and separate microphone.
- Inspect the relevant audio settings and check for mismatched rates across the capture chain.
- If you use multiple physical audio sources, consider whether separate device clocks could be contributing. An audio interface may be worth considering in that specific situation, but it is not a guaranteed drift fix and will not correct a fixed offset already baked into a recording.
Check whether the computer is handling the workload
OBS says its CPU demands depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, cautions that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that a computer can handle a particular recording workload. That makes workload a factor to inspect, not proof that it caused the sync issue.

For a basic recording-configuration starting point, OBS’s help portal suggests the Auto-Configuration Wizard and Simple output mode with recording presets. Change one setting at a time, make a new recording, and compare the saved file. These configuration checks may help you assess workload, but they are not guaranteed synchronization repairs.
Separate monitoring delay from file delay
If an input sounds delayed while you monitor it, that alone does not establish that the saved recording has the same delay. Record a sample and inspect playback independently before changing sync settings. OBS forum users have described differences between monitoring and output behavior, but those reports are configuration-specific and do not establish a universal OBS defect.

Realign audio in an existing Clipchamp project
Microsoft documents detaching recorded audio in Clipchamp so it can be edited separately on the timeline. If the audio is available as a separate asset, you can move, split, or trim it to realign it with the video.
- Open the project and detach the recorded audio from the video.
- On the timeline, move the detached audio into alignment, or split and trim it if that is needed to adjust a section.
- Export the project and check the exported file near both the beginning and later in playback. Editing one portion may not resolve drift elsewhere in the recording.
This is manual editing, not an automatic synchronization repair. Check the current Microsoft Clipchamp support instructions for the interface details that apply to your version.

Troubleshooting: symptom, likely avenue, next check
| What you notice | What to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio is consistently early or late | A fixed capture offset | Adjust OBS Sync Offset, or manually realign a detached Clipchamp audio track; verify the saved output. |
| Audio gradually moves out of sync | Device clocks, audio settings, or workload | Inspect the capture chain and settings, then change one configuration at a time and compare a new file. |
| Monitoring sounds delayed, but the file seems different | Monitoring behavior versus recorded output | Judge a saved sample independently before changing recording sync. |
| A computer meets OBS minimum requirements but recording still struggles | The workload may exceed what the system handles for the chosen settings | Review encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; use OBS’s configuration guidance as a starting point, not a guaranteed fix. |
