First determine whether the audio/video gap stays roughly constant or grows as the stream plays. A stable gap may need a measured OBS audio sync offset; growing drift calls for checking the media file and audio sample-rate path. If the encoded output is synchronized but YouTube playback is delayed or unstable, investigate stream health and delivery before changing source timing.
Diagnose the kind of sync problem first
Audio/video sync and stream latency are different problems. Sync describes the relative timing of picture and sound. YouTube defines latency as the delay from capture to a viewer; lower latency means less player read-ahead buffering, which can make encoder-to-player issues more noticeable. A stream can therefore have synchronized audio and video but still reach viewers late.
Compare an event near the start with one later
Choose a visible action paired with a clear sound, such as a door closing or a drum hit. Compare its timing near the beginning of the program with the same kind of event substantially later. Check YouTube playback or the stream monitor, not only the local OBS preview. If possible, include a loop boundary in the comparison.
- About the same gap both times: this points toward a fixed timing offset. Measure which side leads and by how much before adjusting a source.
- The gap grows over time: a single fixed offset will not solve the underlying problem. Investigate file timing, sample-rate consistency, or another ongoing processing issue.
- The local encoded output is in sync, but YouTube playback is late or unstable: check stream health and delivery conditions before altering source sync.
The pattern is a practical diagnostic clue, not a universal root-cause rule published by OBS or YouTube.

Run a representative test and inspect the prerecorded source
Test the output you actually send
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guide says, “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use a short test with representative motion and sound, then check the encoded YouTube playback or stream monitor. Local monitoring alone does not establish that the output reaching YouTube is synchronized. See YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance.
Check the media source and file
- Confirm that OBS is playing the intended file and, where the source offers track selection, the intended audio track.
- Confirm playback speed is 100% and inspect the source’s loop or restart behavior.
- Play the file locally and compare synchronization near its beginning and end. If the file itself drifts, correct or replace the media before using a source offset.
OBS Media Source documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported formats, and documents loop and “Restart playback when source becomes active” controls. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and audio-track selection. For details, see the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Correct a stable offset in OBS
When the measured gap stays consistent, adjust the audio sync offset on the responsible OBS source, then test the encoded output again. OBS exposes an audio sync offset for sources, but there is no universal correct value or direction: it depends on whether the sound or picture leads and on the measured gap. Make a measured change rather than guessing.
A fixed offset is a timing correction, not a diagnosis. If the gap grows as the stream runs, investigate the drift first instead of using an offset to align only the beginning. Monitor the YouTube output after each adjustment because local monitoring and the final stream output may not behave identically. OBS’s source API documents the audio sync offset capability.

Investigate drift and sample-rate consistency
For a gap that widens over time, check whether the audio device and OBS use consistent sample-rate formats along the signal path. An OBS forum troubleshooting reply identifies a device/OBS sample-rate mismatch as a possible cause of drift and recommends consistent formats. Treat this as a useful check, not a guaranteed diagnosis: it is community troubleshooting guidance, not a current official OBS specification for every setup.
YouTube’s encoder guide recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Use the setting applicable to your output and keep the source and OBS device path coherent; those recommendations are encoder settings, not proof that a mismatch caused a particular desync. See YouTube’s audio and encoder recommendations and the OBS community discussion of sample-rate mismatch.

Rule out YouTube delivery and connection issues
If the local encoded output is synchronized, do not move source timing just because viewers report a delay. Review YouTube stream-health messages and delivery conditions. YouTube notes that network congestion can delay a stream, while lower-latency playback uses less read-ahead buffer and can make encoder-to-player problems more noticeable. Check the YouTube Live stream-health issue categories.
In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points to a delivery problem to investigate, not by itself to an audio sync offset. See OBS’s dropped-frame and connection troubleshooting guidance.

Make changes safely on a continuous channel
There is no universal, no-interruption procedure for changing OBS media and audio settings during every live 24/7 setup; the right process depends on the encoder and stream arrangement. When possible, reproduce the fault in a controlled test. Change one measured setting at a time, then monitor YouTube playback and stream health before treating the fix as confirmed. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and reviewing stream health during the event.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The same audio/video gap appears near the start and much later. | Which side leads, and the measured size of the offset. | Adjust the responsible OBS source’s audio sync offset by a measured amount; retest the encoded output. |
| The gap becomes larger as playback continues. | File synchronization near its start and end; selected track; playback speed; audio device and OBS sample-rate consistency. | Investigate media timing or the ongoing audio path first. Do not expect a fixed offset to correct accumulating drift. |
| A problem appears or changes around a loop or playlist transition. | OBS source selection, track selection, loop/restart behavior, and synchronization around the transition. | Test the transition in a short representative run and correct the source or media behavior you identify. |
| Local output appears synchronized, but YouTube playback is delayed or unstable. | YouTube stream-health messages, latency/buffering behavior, and network delivery. | Investigate delivery before changing source timing. |
| OBS reports dropped frames. | Whether the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Follow OBS connection troubleshooting; dropped frames alone do not establish a source-sync fault. |
