Start by comparing a local recording with the live stream. If both have the same audio fault, check capture, device selection, routing, and settings. If the recording sounds clean, compare playback on another device or network and check the platform’s stream-health status before changing gear.
Find where the audio problem starts
Before changing settings, determine whether the problem is in the audio you capture, the stream you send, or playback on one viewer’s setup. A local recording and a live playback comparison can narrow it down, but neither proves the cause by itself.
- Make a short local recording. Include the same microphone, game or desktop audio, and scene or mix you use when live. Listen for the reported fault.
- Compare with the live stream. If the fault appears in both, investigate the selected input, mute state, routing, and audio settings. If the recording is clean, check the stream’s health and playback on another device or network.
- Work out how widespread it is. Check whether the problem affects one audio source or all sources, one stream or other streams too, and one viewer or multiple viewers. Note whether it happens continuously or only at particular moments, such as when the game or stream is under load.
YouTube recommends testing audio and representative movement before going live, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Fix a microphone or game audio that is missing
- Confirm the intended microphone, game-audio source, or other input is selected.
- Check that the source and device are not muted.
- Confirm the source is included in the mix or output track that is actually sent to the live stream. A source can register locally yet be absent from the stream mix.
- Record a short test after each change so you can tell which one mattered.
There is no single universal routing sequence: the available controls depend on the streaming software and how the scene or mix is configured. Check one source at a time rather than changing several routes at once.

Remove echo or doubled audio
Echo often warrants checking whether the same microphone or audio feed reaches the stream through two routes. In Twitch’s documented Stream Together example, browser-source audio routed through streaming software combined with microphone audio from group camera capture can produce echo or tinny sound. The exact routing depends on your setup, but the useful check is the same: identify every path carrying the affected sound and disable a duplicate route for a test.
For that specific Twitch feature, see Twitch’s Stream Together guide.

Check stream audio settings for YouTube Live
If you stream to YouTube, compare the encoder’s audio settings with YouTube’s published guidance. The values below are YouTube-specific; other platforms may specify different settings.
| Audio format | Sample rate | Audio bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps |
| 5.1 surround sound | 48 kHz | 384 kbps |
These settings are a specification check, not a guaranteed fix for every distortion or dropout. If the voice crackles, clips, or sounds distorted, compare the local recording first, then inspect input level or gain, the selected device, and the encoder’s audio configuration. Avoid applying a fixed sample-rate or sync change without evidence that it fits your setup.

Diagnose audio that is out of sync
First check whether the same timing problem appears in the local recording. If it does, focus on capture and configuration. If local audio and video line up but the live playback does not, try another device or network and compare another stream. This helps distinguish a stream-specific problem from viewer-side playback conditions, but it does not identify a universal delay value to apply.
Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guide recommends checking another stream and another network when isolating viewing problems. Do not add a fixed audio offset simply because sync is wrong for one viewer; the appropriate correction depends on where the delay originates.

Investigate audio that cuts out or a stream that keeps disrupting
A microphone can be working correctly even when the stream delivery is not. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its guidance identifies an unstable route to the server, a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, server choice, and potentially interfering network or security software as areas to investigate.
- Check the streaming platform’s stream-health indicators and messages when the interruption occurs.
- Check whether dropped frames or disconnections happen at the same time as the audio fault.
- If the connection is unstable, assess whether the selected bitrate is sustainable on your upload connection and whether a different ingest server is appropriate. A fixed bitrate rule is not universal; platform limits and the connection’s sustained capacity matter.
- If the disruption persists, investigate whether network or security software could be interfering with the route to the ingest server.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting article, published September 30, 2024, explains these connection checks.

When to suspect hardware
Do not buy a microphone, interface, cable, or repair kit as the first response. If the same fault appears in a local recording after checking device selection, mute state, routing, and relevant settings, test the affected device or connection in isolation where your setup allows. Replace hardware only after you have identified a specific failed or incompatible part; a stream dropout or a viewer-only playback problem does not, by itself, establish a microphone fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your issue is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than fixing a live microphone, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
