A black screen on Epic Games can come from the Epic Games Launcher, one game, a fullscreen or HDR transition, the graphics driver, or Windows itself. Identify which screen is actually failing first, then work through the least destructive fix for that scenario. Do not reinstall Epic immediately: launcher cache clearing, file verification, display-mode changes, and driver troubleshooting solve many cases without removing installed games.
Identify the black-screen problem

Epic-specific fixes cannot repair a disconnected monitor, failed display cable, defective GPU, or Windows-level crash. If the whole monitor loses its signal, treat that as a Windows or hardware problem rather than a launcher problem.
Quick, low-risk checks
- Wait briefly after the first launch following a game or graphics-driver update. Shader compilation can temporarily make a game look stuck.
- Press
Alt+Tabto check whether the game is open behind another window. - Press
Alt+Enterto toggle windowed and fullscreen modes. This is a common compatibility test, not a guaranteed Epic fix, and not every game supports it. - Temporarily disconnect extra monitors, confirm the monitor’s input source, and reseat or replace the display cable if the entire signal disappears.
- Restart Windows rather than merely closing the game.
- Test another game or application. If only one game fails, do not start by reinstalling the launcher.
Fix a black or blank Epic Games Launcher
Check Epic’s status and update the launcher
Check the Epic Games Server Status page first. An outage is not something you can repair locally; wait for service to recover and try again.
To check for a launcher update, open Epic Games Launcher, select your profile icon in the upper-right corner, choose Settings, and select Restart and Update if that button is available. Labels can vary by launcher version.

Clear the launcher cache on Windows
- Exit Epic Games Launcher. Check the hidden system-tray icons, right-click the Epic icon, and choose Exit.
- Press
Windows + R, enter%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete whichever of these folders exist:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Reopen Epic Games Launcher.
Epic says the launcher rebuilds these cache folders. Do not delete the entire EpicGamesLauncher folder; the official procedure targets only the listed cache folders. See Epic’s launcher troubleshooting guide.
Clear the launcher cache on macOS
- Quit Epic Games Launcher.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash, then relaunch Epic.
Test launcher compatibility settings
Epic documents disabling fullscreen optimizations for launcher problems. Exit Epic, locate Epic GamesLauncherEngineBinariesWin64EpicGamesLauncher.exe, right-click it, choose Properties → Compatibility, enable Disable fullscreen optimizations, and select Apply. This is a reversible test, not a universal performance improvement.
You can also test Run as administrator, but elevated permissions are not a general fix. Turn the setting back off if it makes no difference.
Fix a black game launched through Epic
Verify the game files
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find the affected game, select its three-dot menu, and choose Manage.
- Select Verify and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Verification checks local files and replaces files that differ or are damaged. Epic says it does not affect saved data, although it does not repair a graphics-driver fault, incompatible display mode, game patch bug, overlay conflict, failing hardware, or every configuration file. Reset fullscreen and display settings
If the game has audio, responds to input, or appears to be running behind a black window:
- Press
Alt+Enter. - If the game becomes visible, switch to Windowed, Borderless, or Windowed Fullscreen.
- Use the monitor’s native resolution and a normal refresh rate.
- Temporarily disable HDR and variable-refresh features as diagnostic tests.
- Restart the game after applying the changes.
Borderless mode is usually the safer reversible test when the problem occurs after Alt+Tab, HDR changes, monitor switching, or exclusive fullscreen. Intel documents cases involving fullscreen behavior and black screens; disabling fullscreen optimizations should therefore be treated as a test rather than a guaranteed cure.

Disable overlays and background applications
Temporarily close or disable Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, RGB utilities, capture software, FPS counters, other launchers, and browser windows using hardware acceleration. Re-enable them one at a time after the game works to identify a conflict. Epic also recommends disabling background applications during troubleshooting.

On laptops and systems with integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure the game uses the high-performance GPU. Depending on the driver and laptop, use NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings, AMD’s Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings, or Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Menu names vary, so do not assume every computer exposes the same controls.
Official driver sources are NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. Laptop owners should also check the laptop manufacturer’s support page. If the black screen began immediately after a driver update, testing a rollback may be more useful than installing an even newer driver.
Fortnite-specific black-screen fixes
These commands are for Fortnite and should not be copied indiscriminately to other Epic games.
Lower Fortnite’s graphics settings
If Fortnite reaches its settings menu, open Settings → Video, set Quality Presets to Low, set 3D Resolution to 100%, apply the settings, and restart.

-d3d12 -es31. - Launch Fortnite.
Epic documents this as a possible workaround when DirectX 12 causes crashes, freezing, or black screens. It is not a universal command for Epic games.

Force DirectX 11
In the same Fortnite settings area, enable Additional Command Line Arguments and enter:
-d3d11Relaunch Fortnite. To return to DirectX 12, remove the argument or disable the checkbox. Epic’s DirectX 11 guidance applies specifically to Fortnite.
Reset Fortnite’s graphics configuration
Navigate to %localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. Right-click GameUserSettings.ini, choose Properties, and ensure Read-only is unchecked. This helps when Fortnite cannot save graphics-mode changes.

Close Fortnite and Epic Games Launcher. Press Windows + R, enter %appdata%, then navigate back to AppDataLocal and remove relevant NVIDIA DXCache or AMD DxCache files. Ignore files Windows says are in use. Shader caches rebuild automatically, so the first launch may stutter while shaders compile again. Follow Epic’s Fortnite DirectX 12 guidance carefully.
When Epic says the game is running but no window appears
- Verify the game files.
- Repair Easy Anti-Cheat if the game uses it.
- Remove mods, ReShade, DLL injectors, and unsupported overlays.
- Check whether security software is blocking the game.
Epic documents adding the game folder to Windows Security exclusions for some Fortnite launch failures. This lowers antivirus protection, so use it only as a temporary, targeted diagnostic test with a game obtained from an official source. Remove the exclusion if it does not help. Never permanently disable Windows Defender, antivirus, firewall protection, or anti-cheat.
Skip a publisher launcher when applicable
For a game that uses a separate publisher launcher, open the game’s settings in Epic, enable Additional Command Line Arguments, and enter:

-skip_launcherEpic says this generally applies only to games with their own launcher. Remove the argument if the game stops starting; it is not a general black-screen command.

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Microsoft says the screen may flicker or beep when the reset succeeds. If Windows remains blank, check the monitor’s input source, cable, GPU power connections, and whether another monitor works. Test with one display and disconnect unnecessary adapters.
For deeper Windows failures, use Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide, including Explorer restart, Startup Settings, or Safe Mode. If other games and applications also lose the signal, show artifacts, or crash the system, contact the GPU, laptop, monitor, or system manufacturer rather than treating the problem as an Epic launcher fault.
Last resort: reinstall only after the safer steps
Remove custom launch arguments, confirm saves are backed up or synchronized, and check whether the game’s publisher has separate repair instructions before reinstalling a game. Reinstalling can consume significant time and bandwidth.
Reinstalling Epic Games Launcher should be late in the process. Epic warns that its launcher reinstallation process can remove installed titles. Record installation locations and confirm what will be removed before proceeding.
What to send support
Contact Epic for launcher, account, installation, or Epic-wide problems. Contact the game’s publisher for a problem isolated to one title, its anti-cheat, or its own launcher. Contact the GPU or computer manufacturer when Windows loses the display signal or multiple applications fail.
Before opening a ticket, reproduce the issue once and collect:
- Game title and whether the problem affects one game or all Epic games.
- Windows or macOS version, GPU model, driver version, CPU, and RAM.
- Whether sound continues and whether Epic reports the game as running.
- The exact trigger: launch, update, Alt+Tab, HDR, fullscreen, monitor change, or extended play.

%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedLogs. - Epic launcher logs: open profile icon → Settings, enable Debug Logging, select Enable Now, reproduce the issue, return to Settings, choose Show Logs, and attach the latest log. Disable debug logging afterward.
Logs are most useful when collected immediately after reproducing the black screen.
