Buffering on a 24/7 YouTube stream hosted on an Indian VPS can come from three different places: the encoder on the VPS, the VPS’s outbound connection to YouTube, or playback on viewers’ devices and networks. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and the encoder’s output before changing hosts. YouTube’s published guidance is general; it does not establish that Indian VPS hosting itself causes buffering.
First identify which part of the stream is failing
Separate playback complaints from interruptions in the stream being sent to YouTube. Ask whether the problem affects every viewer, viewers using one network, or just one person. Check the watch page from a separate connection, and compare it with the encoder’s local output or recording.
- One viewer affected: Check that viewer’s connection, device, and playback quality. YouTube directs operators to consider viewer network and health when an individual viewer has trouble.
- Several viewers on different connections affected: Inspect the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health status; YouTube directs operators toward encoder troubleshooting when multiple viewers report problems across different connections.
- Encoder output itself is poor or stops: Investigate the source, encoding process, and VPS CPU before treating the issue as a network-route problem.
Keep a log of interruption times and durations, the exact Live Control Room message, encoder logs and CPU load, and outbound throughput or packet-loss measurements during the incident. Comparing reports from different viewer networks helps distinguish a playback-side issue from a source-side interruption. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these diagnostic paths: Troubleshoot live stream issues and Monitor your live stream.
Read YouTube’s stream-health status and inspect the encoder
Capture the exact error and time
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the stream and note the stream-health status, any specific error text, and when it appears. The dashboard provides real-time metrics; a timestamped error is more useful than a general report that the stream “buffered.” See YouTube’s stream monitoring guidance.

Check the VPS encoder process
Confirm the encoder is still running, its output is advancing, and CPU use is not sustained at a level that disrupts encoding. If the setup records an archive, check that the file continues to grow and inspect a segment from the period when viewers reported trouble. A damaged or stalled local output points back toward the source or encoder; a healthy output shifts attention to delivery toward YouTube.
Record the encoder software and version along with its logs. If output problems persist, test a different encoder in a controlled stream rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube’s troubleshooting page recommends checking encoder setup and testing the stream: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
Make sure the VPS has enough sustained outbound capacity
The important figure is usable, sustained upload capacity from the VPS to YouTube—not a provider’s headline speed or a brief speed test. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and counting both primary and backup feeds. It also warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube streaming tips.

For example, a 10 Mbps feed needs at least 12 Mbps of usable sustained upload when applying YouTube’s 20% margin (10 × 1.2). That is an arithmetic application of YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a VPS plan can sustain the rate. If a backup feed is sent at the same time, include its bitrate too.
- Measure outbound throughput during the actual stream and, if possible, during the periods when buffering occurs.
- Compare the measured sustained capacity with the combined bitrate of all feeds, with the recommended margin included.
- Check whether the host plan has a network-interface limit, traffic shaping, or other egress constraints; confirm the plan’s current terms with the provider.
A short test that passes does not rule out congestion or loss during a longer 24/7 run. If encoder output and CPU remain healthy but interruptions coincide with poor egress measurements, ask the VPS host to investigate interface limits, packet loss, jitter, traffic shaping, and the route to YouTube ingest. Those are diagnostic questions, not evidence that a particular Indian provider or route is at fault. YouTube’s general guidance does not identify Indian VPS routing as a cause.
Match the output settings to YouTube’s recommendations
Use YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you have selected. The following are YouTube’s current H.264 ingest recommendations, retrieved in 2026; they describe ingest settings, not the capacity of your VPS:

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are not interchangeable targets: for example, do not apply the 1080p60 figure to a different codec or frame rate. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the selected configuration.
- Use a supported, stable resolution and frame rate that the source and VPS can encode consistently.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube ingest destination using the correct stream key.
- Test with representative motion and audio, then watch Live Control Room health while checking the encoder output.
A bitrate that is too high for the VPS’s sustained egress can cause delivery problems; an unstable encoder can cause problems even when the network has capacity. Adjust one variable at a time so the result is interpretable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose latency based on whether the stream needs interaction
Latency changes how much playback read-ahead viewers have. Lower latency reduces that buffer and makes playback interruptions more likely. YouTube states: “With lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” See Understand live streaming latency.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
| Latency approach | When to consider it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Unattended 24/7 content without active audience interaction | More read-ahead buffering can improve resilience to brief delivery variation. |
| Low latency | Streams where quicker interaction matters | Less read-ahead buffering can increase the likelihood of playback buffering. |
| Ultra-low latency | Real-time conversation where minimal delay is important | More sensitive to interruptions; not a default choice for a continuous unattended channel. |
For a stream that does not depend on live audience interaction, test normal latency first, then compare a lower-latency mode only if faster interaction is worth the stability trade-off. Change the mode through the stream’s latency setting in YouTube’s Live Control Room and evaluate with a representative test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a controlled test before moving the VPS
- Save a baseline: Record current resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, latency mode, encoder version, and the exact Live Control Room health messages.
- Test privately: Run an unlisted stream with representative content, and monitor encoder output, CPU, outbound throughput, and stream health together.
- Cover the failure pattern: Keep the test running long enough to observe the periods when the issue normally occurs; a brief clean test cannot establish that a 24/7 stream is stable.
- Change one factor: If evidence points to encoding, adjust or test the encoder. If egress is insufficient or impaired, address capacity or ask the host to investigate the route. If only some viewers are affected, compare their playback conditions and networks.
- Validate recovery: If continuous availability matters, test the encoder’s failover behavior rather than assuming a backup feed or process will work during a real interruption. YouTube recommends test streams and testing encoder failover in its streaming tips.
Do not switch Indian regions or providers as a first step without measurements. No provider-specific bandwidth, route, or availability conclusion follows from YouTube’s general guidance; verify the actual VPS plan and capture evidence from the failing period before asking for a change.
Edge case: check ingest protocol if the setup uses HLS
If the encoder is configured to send using HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS, account for its higher latency: HLS sends segments, so it has higher latency than RTMP. This matters only when the setup actually uses HLS; it is not a general explanation for buffering on every VPS stream. See YouTube’s live streaming protocol guidance.
